First game I played with Odyssey Malphite was a late-night ranked session, maybe 1 AM on a Wednesday. Locked him in top lane against a Darius and honestly wasnt expecting much. But the moment I loaded in and saw the model, the sci-fi plating, the glowing orange energy lines running through him – I knew this skin had something going on. Malphite skins range from lazy recolors to genuinely creative takes, and Odyssey sits comfortably in the upper half. Not gonna lie, it caught me off guard how much I liked it.
What Odyssey Malphite actually brings to the table
The entire model gets reworked into this space-faring rock golem vibe. Malphite looks like he got pulled out of some alien asteroid belt and fitted with tech armor. Orange and dark grey dominate the color palette, which reads really clean on the Rift compared to his base purple. The silhouette stays recognizable but the details are all new.
VFX is where this Epic tier skin earns the 1350 RP. His Q, Seismic Shard, launches this orange energy projectile that looks distinctly different from base. Feels snappier visually even though the hitbox is identical. Ground Slam has new particle effects radiating outward, and his E leaves behind these tech-looking impact marks. Could be wrong here but I think the W, Thunderclap, also has subtle glow changes on the empowered autos.
The R though. Unstoppable Force. Big highlight. Malphite blasts forward with a trail of orange cosmic energy and the impact zone lights up with this sci-fi explosion effect. Been playing Malphite on and off since season 5 and the ult on this skin just hits different in teamfights. You feel the engage harder. Your backline peels become more dramatic. One game last month I ulted into a 4-man clump at dragon pit and my duo literally said “that looked insane” in voice chat.
Recall animation is new too. He does this whole space portal thing, fits the Odyssey theme perfectly. Voice lines stay base, no new VO, which is expected at this price point. Standard for most Epic skins.
The Odyssey line and where Malphite fits
Released September 12, 2018. Right in the middle of the Odyssey event, which was one of Riot’s better PvE experiments. Viktor Titov and Grafit Studio handled the splash, they captured the vibe perfectly. Malphite looks massive and imposing in the artwork, floating through space with that orange energy crackling around him.
The Odyssey skinline includes some heavy hitters. Kayn, Jinx, Yasuo all got skins in that batch. Malphite fills the tank role in the crew and I think his design holds up well against the others. Kinda feels like Riot gave him more attention than you’d expect for a champion who doesn’t sell as many skins as the flashy carries.
6 chromas total for this one. Ruby is the obvious pick if you want the aggressive red look, and I’ve seen it pop up in my Diamond games more than the base version honestly. Tanzanite shifts everything into deep purple which gives Malphite this cosmic void feel that I personally run most games. Pearl exists too but the white-on-orange combo reads a bit weird to me in lane. (Random aside: Tanzanite Odyssey Malphite has been my phone lock screen for like two years now and nobody has ever commented on it.)
Is 1350 RP the right price?
Straight talk: Malphite has a lot of skins. Mecha Malphite exists. Dark Star exists with a Prestige variant. Old God is relatively recent. So the competition within his own champion pool is real. Where Odyssey stands out is the clean color palette and the VFX consistency. Every ability feels cohesive with the space theme.
For Malphite mains who splitpush top and then look for the game-winning R flank, this skin makes those moments look incredible. The ult VFX alone might justify the purchase if you’re someone who values that engage fantasy. Been daily driving this one for maybe 30 games this season between Diamond 3 and Diamond 2, and it never gets old watching the ult connect.
Compared to Dark Star which runs 1350 RP as well, I think Odyssey has a warmer, more energetic feel. Dark Star goes full edgy void aesthetic. Depends on your taste. Real talk though, if you only buy one Malphite skin and you’re not willing to go Legendary price, Odyssey is a strong pick. Shop has it, permanent availability, no vault nonsense. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. Skip if you already own Mecha or Dark Star and dont play Malphite enough to justify a third skin. But for anyone climbing ranked with the rock, top pick for Malphite mains who want something that looks premium without the Legendary tax.
