Malphite

Malphite Skins

14 skins available

Malphite has one of those skin catalogs that sneaks up on you. Fourteen skins deep and I bet most players can only name three off the top of their head. Been playing him on and off since season 3, mostly as a counterpick into heavy AD comps, and I've cycled through probably eight of these skins at this point. Some hit hard. Some feel like Riot forgot about them. The collection spans 15 years of League history and honestly thats kind of wild when you think about how much the game's visual standards have shifted since 2010.

How Malphite's Skin Catalog Has Evolved

Fourteen skins total. Five Standards, eight Epics, one Mythic. No Legendary. Let that sink in for a second. One of the most iconic engage champions in the game, been around since beta practically, and Riot hasnt given him a single Legendary skin. Not gonna lie, it stings a little when you look at champions with half his playerbase sitting on two Legendaries.

The oldest skin in the collection is Coral Reef Malphite, dating back to 2010. Early League era where "skin" meant "we changed the texture map and called it a day." Pool Party Malphite is the newest, dropped in 2025, so Riot clearly still remembers he exists. Just not Legendary-budget remembers.

The early batch is rough. Shamrock Malphite, Coral Reef, Marble, Obsidian. These are all from that 2010-2011 window where the art team was still figuring things out. Could be wrong here but I think Obsidian might be the only one from that era worth equipping today, and even then its mostly nostalgia carrying it. The real collection starts around Glacial and Mecha, when Riot started actually investing in new models and VFX for Malphite.

Eight of his fourteen skins sit at Epic tier. That's a heavy Epic lean. Means most of his good options cluster around 1350 RP, which is fine for your wallet but also means theres not a massive quality spread between his top picks. The Mythic slot goes to Prestige Dark Star, which is its own conversation. No budget options that genuinely compete with the Epics though. The Standards are basically museum pieces at this point.

Best Skins for Malphite

Dark Star Malphite. Full stop. This is the one. Released as part of the Dark Star line and it transforms the big rock into a cosmic entity that feels genuinely threatening. The Q is a dark matter projectile that reads cleanly in lane, the W ground slam has this gravitational pulse effect, and the R. The ult. When you Unstoppable Force into a backline with Dark Star equipped, the impact VFX is probably the most satisfying thing in Malphite's entire kit across all skins. Played maybe 150 ranked games with this one last season and never got tired of it.

Mecha Malphite is the flashy alternative. Giant robot Malphite. Transforms into a jet during his ult which is just absurd in the best way. The recall animation where he assembles from parts still holds up years later. Kinda feels like Riot put more creative energy into the Mecha concept than any other Malphite skin. The VFX are distinct, the model is completely different from base, and landing a 5-man ult in teamfight with the jet transformation is peak League. Had a game last Thursday where I flanked from river and the enemy Jinx literally typed "WHAT" in all chat after the Mecha ult landed on her.

Glacial Malphite deserves the third spot. Ice theme fits the champion fantasy perfectly. Malphite is already about being this immovable force, and wrapping that in frozen armor just works. The ability VFX lean into frost particles and the Q specifically looks crisp. Not the most creative choice but sometimes the straightforward thematic match is the right call.

Odyssey Malphite is solid. Spacefaring rock man. The skin came out of the Odyssey event and carries that sci-fi energy well. Good VFX, clean model, fits the line. Might be overthinking it but I think Odyssey suffers from being the fourth-best Epic on a champion where four Epics are all competing at roughly the same quality level. Its good. Just not distinctly better than the ones above it.

Prestige Dark Star rounds out the top five but with a massive asterisk. Mythic tier means you're not just buying this one. You either grinded the event when it was live or you're spending Mythic Essence. The gold-and-cosmic color scheme looks clean in loading screen. In game? Honestly hard to tell apart from regular Dark Star at normal camera distance. (Random aside: I showed both splashes to my duo partner and he picked the wrong one as the Prestige. Says a lot.)

Skinlines and Themes That Fit Malphite

Dark Star is the clear winner for thematic fit. A living mountain turned into a cosmic horror entity. The power fantasy aligns perfectly. Malphite's kit is about being this unstoppable geological force and Dark Star translates that into space-scale destruction. Been saying this since it dropped in season 9 I think, or maybe early 10, dont remember exactly.

Mecha is the fun pick. Doesn't match Malphite's lore at all but who cares when your ult turns you into a fighter jet. Sometimes the best skins are the ones that go completely sideways from the champion's identity. The Mecha line has always been about spectacle and Malphite's kit supports spectacle better than most.

Old God Malphite is an interesting one thematically. Ancient eldritch rock creature. Fits the "primordial being" angle of his lore better than most people give it credit for. The Forgotten Depths and Wonders of the World lines also tried to lean into the geological angle but those are older skins and the execution just wasnt there yet. Bilgewater Ironside Malphite exists too, pirate cannon rock, and honestly its one of those skins where the concept sounds better than the result. Real talk though, the skinline variety is decent for Malphite. He's touched Glacial, Infernal, Odyssey, Mecha, Dark Star. Riot's explored a lot of directions with him even if none hit Legendary tier.

Budget vs Premium Picks

Every good Malphite skin costs 1350 RP. Thats the reality. The Standards range from 520 to 975 RP and none of them compete with the Epic tier options. Obsidian Malphite at 520 RP is technically the cheapest and its. Fine. Dark rock. Base animations. If you're climbing ranked on a budget and you just want something other than default, Obsidian does the job.

But the real value play is waiting for a sale on Dark Star or Mecha at 1350 RP. Both go on sale periodically and at 675 RP on sale they're absolute steals. Could be coping but I genuinely think sale-price Dark Star Malphite is the best value skin purchase in the game for any tank player. You get completely new VFX, a new model, distinct sound design, all for less than a Standard skin's normal price.

No Legendary to upsell you on. No Ultimate bleeding your wallet. The premium ceiling here is 1350 RP (unless you're chasing the Prestige through Mythic Essence, which is a different economy entirely). For Malphite mains, that means you can own his three best skins for the price of one Legendary on another champion. Not bad. (Sidebar for tank mains specifically: this is rare. Appreciate it before Riot inevitably drops a 1820 RP Malphite and resets the meta.)

Frequently Asked Questions

How many skins does Malphite have?

Fourteen skins total as of 2025. Five Standards from the early days, eight Epics that form the real collection, and one Mythic in Prestige Dark Star. Decent count for a champion who's been around since basically the start. Most of the quality sits in the Epic tier though, the old Standards are showing their age hard.

What is the best Malphite skin?

Dark Star Malphite. Been my go-to for multiple seasons now. The ult VFX alone justify the pick. Mecha is a close second if you want something more playful with the jet transformation on R. Both are 1350 RP so the price difference isnt a factor. Comes down to cosmic horror vs giant robot vibes.

What is the cheapest Malphite skin?

Obsidian Malphite at 520 RP. Shamrock and Coral Reef sit around that range too. Honestly none of the cheap options are worth recommending over just saving for an Epic. The quality gap between 520 RP and 1350 RP Malphite skins is massive. Wait for a sale on Mecha or Dark Star instead.

Does Malphite have a Legendary skin?

No. Fourteen skins and not a single Legendary. Kinda criminal for a champion this iconic. His ceiling is Epic at 1350 RP plus the Mythic Prestige Dark Star. Been waiting for a Legendary Malphite for years at this point. Maybe Riot will eventually get around to it but I'm not holding my breath.

What skinlines is Malphite in?

A bunch. Dark Star, Mecha, Odyssey, Glacial, Old God, Infernal, Bilgewater, Pool Party among others. He's been spread across a ton of thematic lines over the years. Dark Star and Mecha fit him best in my opinion. Glacial is a natural thematic match too. The variety is solid even if the tier ceiling stays at Epic.

Does Malphite have chromas?

Several of his Epic skins have chroma sets. Dark Star and Odyssey both got chromas when they released. The Prestige Dark Star is essentially a chroma-level variant of the base Dark Star if we're being honest. Chroma availability varies by skin so check the shop for whichever one you're eyeing specifically.

When was Malphite's last skin released?

Pool Party Malphite in 2025. Before that it had been a bit of a drought. Riot tends to cycle back to Malphite every couple years since he's always relevant in solo queue as a reliable engage tank. The release pace isnt fast but its consistent enough that mains dont feel completely forgotten.

Is Malphite worth buying skins for?

If you play him regularly, absolutely. His Epic skins genuinely change how the champion feels. Dark Star and Mecha in particular make the ult feel way more impactful. Since everything caps at 1350 RP you're not breaking the bank either. Spammed him in ranked last split and having a good skin makes the R key hit different. Worth it for any tank main.
