First time I saw Prestige Dark Star Malphite load in, I thought someone modded the game. The gold and white on a cosmic horror rock monster should not work. It does. Been running this in Diamond since around patch 10.7 and honestly not gonna lie, the skin commands attention in ways the base Dark Star version just cant.
What Prestige Dark Star Malphite actually brings
So the base Dark Star Malphite already had the whole cosmic entity vibe going. Purple nebula effects, the gravitational pull aesthetic on abilities. Prestige flips the palette into white and gold territory. Think celestial royalty instead of void horror. The Q – Seismic Shard – sends out this bright golden comet trail that reads way cleaner against the Rift than the purple original. Played maybe 150 games with this thing and the Q visibility alone is worth the prestige treatment.
W is where it gets interesting. Ground Slam’s shockwave ripples out in these warm golden arcs. In teamfights around dragon pit last season, my jungler literally typed “what skin is that” mid-fight because the W proc looked so clean. The E follows suit with the prestige palette swap, bright particles replacing the darker cosmic dust.
The R though. Unstoppable Force. Malphite’s whole identity in solo queue wrapped up in one button. The prestige version turns his ult into this streak of white-gold energy across the screen. Kinda feels like watching a shooting star slam into their backline. I engaged on a 4-man ult near baron around 2 AM one Tuesday and my duo said it looked like a cinematic. He’s exaggerating but the point stands – the VFX carry hard.
New recall animation stays in line with the prestige aesthetic. Voice lines stay base, no VO refresh. Standard for a Mythic tier skin. The model itself trades the dark purple crystalline textures for polished gold plating with white cosmic energy flowing through the cracks. Malphite looks less like a corrupted star and more like something divine.
The Dark Star line and how Prestige fits
Dark Star is one of Riot’s best skinlines. Full stop. The cosmic horror angle works on so many champions and Malphite slots in naturally since he’s already a literal rock entity. The prestige variant dropped March 26, 2020, right in the middle of season 10. Rudy Siswanto nailed the splash – the gold detailing against the deep space background hits different from most prestige splashes that just look like a recolor. (Random aside: this splash has been my desktop wallpaper longer than I care to admit.)
This Mythic skin sits at special pricing, meaning you’re not buying it for straight RP. Event tokens, Mythic Essence, or whatever the current prestige acquisition system looks like. Available now through the prestige shop rotation. No chromas on this one which makes sense since the whole point of prestige is already being the premium variant.
Could be wrong here but I think Prestige Dark Star Malphite is one of the better early prestige skins. Some of those 2019-2020 prestiges were literally just “add gold filter” and ship it. This one actually modified the VFX enough to feel distinct from regular Dark Star Malphite. Season 10 I think Riot was starting to figure out what prestige should actually mean.
Is Prestige Dark Star Malphite worth the grind?
Real verdict: if you main Malphite, this is a flex pick in champ select. Not in the gameplay sense. In the “I have something most people dont” sense. Been spamming Malphite in Diamond when my team needs engage and I keep coming back to this skin over the other options. The gold VFX on R specifically – when you’re looking for a 5-man engage to win a teamfight around elder drake, the visual feedback just feels right.
The competition in Malphite’s skin catalog is decent. Odyssey is solid. Old God has the thematic edge for some players. FPX has the esports prestige factor. But Prestige Dark Star occupies this specific lane of “premium cosmic” that nothing else in his collection touches. For Malphite one-tricks climbing through ranked, there’s maybe 3 skins worth caring about and this sits comfortably in that group.
Fair warning though. If you’re not a Malphite player and just collecting prestiges, the grind might not justify itself. Malphite is a straightforward champion – you lane, you scale, you press R on 3+ people and win the teamfight. The skin doesn’t change that loop. What it does is make every Q poke in lane and every all-in ult look like something out of a highlight reel. Worth the Mythic currency for mains. For everyone else, maybe wait until it rotates into an easier acquisition window.
S-tier Malphite cosmetic. The golden cosmic rock fantasy that base Dark Star promises but doesn’t fully deliver on.
