PROJECT: Mordekaiser

First time I saw this skin on PBE I genuinely stopped scrolling. Mordekaiser in the PROJECT line felt like something Riot had been sitting on for years, and when it finally dropped in May 2021 the execution was better than I expected. Not gonna lie, I locked this in day one and played maybe 40 games that first week alone. The mace, the armor plating, the holographic visor – everything reads like a top lane war machine from a cyberpunk dystopia. Which is exactly what PROJECT skins should feel like.

How PROJECT: Mordekaiser plays different

This is a full Legendary at 1820 RP, so you get the complete package. New voice lines, new VFX on every ability, new recall animation. Fred Tatasciore handles the VO and the robotic processing on his voice fits the PROJECT fantasy perfectly. The base Mordekaiser voice is already intimidating but this one sounds like a corrupted AI reading you your death sentence.

Q feels heavier. The mace slam has this digital shockwave effect that radiates outward with orange-red circuitry patterns. Played maybe 300 games with this skin across seasons 11 and 12, and the Q animation still hasnt gotten old for me. The wind-up has a subtle holographic trail that makes each bonk feel earned.

W is where things get interesting. The shield visuals swap from the standard dark magic aesthetic to a hexagonal barrier grid. Looks like you’re activating some kind of personal force field. When you pop it for the heal, the grid fragments scatter – clean detail that most people probably dont notice in teamfights but it’s there.

E pulls enemies in with a digitized gravity well. Think Tron meets the Rift. The ground indicator has circuit board patterns running through it, and when it connects theres this satisfying snap of energy. Been running this in Diamond top lane and the E visual actually feels slightly easier to track than base, which might be placebo but I’ll take it.

The R though. Real talk. When you ult someone into the Death Realm, the entire arena shifts to this neon-gridded digital space. The sky fractures into data streams. It’s one of the best R transformations in the game across any skin tier. Last Thursday I ulted their fed Katarina in a crucial teamfight near baron pit and my duo literally said “that looked like a movie.” He’s right. The Death Realm on PROJECT: Mordekaiser is a visual upgrade over every other Mordekaiser skin’s ult environment. Not even close.

(Random sidebar: the recall animation where he stabs his mace into the ground and uploads himself is my favorite recall in the game. I will die on this hill.)

The PROJECT line and release context

PROJECT: Mordekaiser released May 27, 2021. Mid season 11. West Studio handled the splash, and they nailed the composition – Mordekaiser standing in a ruined cityscape with his mace crackling with energy. The orange-red color palette pops against the dark background.

The PROJECT skinline is one of Riot’s longest running themes. We’re talking Yasuo, Vayne, Fiora, Pyke – some of the most popular skins in the game sit in this line. Mordekaiser fits naturally. He’s already a walking suit of armor, so converting that into cybernetic plating just works. Kinda feels like he was designed for this skinline from the start.

9 chromas total if you want to customize further. Amethyst swaps the orange energy to purple which honestly reads cleaner against certain map skins. Reckoning is the event-exclusive one with a darker frame and orange-black contrast that hits harder than base in my opinion. Ruby exists but I think it’s the weakest of the set – the red-on-red doesnt create enough contrast with the base VFX.

Might be overthinking it but the Pearl chroma turns him into this white-and-cyan mech that looks like it belongs in a completely different game. Season 11 or 12, dont remember exactly, I ran Pearl for about three weeks straight before going back to base because the orange just felt more Mordekaiser.

Is PROJECT: Mordekaiser worth 1820 RP?

Straight talk: this is the best Mordekaiser skin if you can only own one. Full Legendary price, earns it. New VO from Fred Tatasciore, complete VFX overhaul, the Death Realm transformation alone justifies the price. Still in the shop, grab it whenever.

The competition within Mordekaiser’s skin catalog is decent. Dark Star is solid, Pentakill III has the thematic appeal, High Noon goes hard. But PROJECT: Mordekaiser sits at the top because of the voice lines and the R environment. Those two things carry it above everything else. Could be wrong here but I think even the newer releases havent topped what this skin delivers per RP spent.

Been maining Mordekaiser with this skin on and off since it dropped and I keep coming back to it over the alternatives. If you’re a Mordekaiser one-trick climbing in top lane, this is the lock-in. If you play him occasionally in comp as a counter-pick, it’s still worth it just for how good the ult feels. Overpriced for casual players who touch Mordekaiser twice a season, sure. But for mains? No question. 1820 RP well spent.

Skip the chroma bundle unless you’re committed. Base orange is the cleanest read on the Rift and you’ll probably rotate back to it after experimenting anyway. Amethyst or Reckoning if you need one alternative. That’s the move.
