First time I saw Prestige Blood Moon Aatrox load in on the enemy team, I thought somebody modded their client. The white and gold color shift hit completely different from the standard Blood Moon version, and I remember sitting there in loading screen just staring at it. That was back in early season 9, January 2019 to be exact. Been a long time since a prestige skin actually made me stop and look.
The gold treatment and what it changes
So the whole concept here is taking the Blood Moon Aatrox base and dipping it in white and gold. Sounds simple. Kinda is simple, honestly. But the execution works because Aatrox’s model is big enough to carry the color swap without looking washed out. The armor plating picks up this warm gold that catches light on the Rift in a way that base Blood Moon just doesnt manage with its darker palette.
VFX got the prestige treatment too. His Q slams have that golden particle effect instead of the crimson blood splatter, and honestly I think the visibility is better for it. Playing against an Aatrox with red VFX on red-side jungle? Messy. The gold reads cleaner. Not sure if it’s just me but the W chain also feels more visible in teamfights with the lighter color, which is kind of a competitive advantage if you think about it.
The recall animation carries over from Blood Moon with the prestige color shift applied. Looks clean. No new voice lines though, voice stays default. Same Ramon Tikaram performance underneath all that gold plating. For a Mythic skin thats about what you’d expect from the 2019 era prestiges. They weren’t doing full VO overhauls for these.
Real talk though, the Q3 knockup with the gold particles popping off in a late-game teamfight is one of the better visual moments Aatrox has across his entire skin catalog. Played maybe 40 games with this thing back when I was grinding Diamond in season 9, and the ult transformation with the golden wings spreading out behind him still goes hard. The wings specifically. They catch this almost sunrise quality that the base Blood Moon red wings don’t have.
Blood Moon line and the prestige context
Blood Moon as a skinline has been one of Riot’s most consistent themes. Aatrox fits the demon aesthetic naturally given his whole Darkin lore, and the prestige variant released January 10, 2019 during the Blood Moon event pass. Alex ‘alexplank’ Flores nailed the splash, the composition with Aatrox mid-swing surrounded by that golden aura works perfectly against the darker Blood Moon backdrop.
This was early in the prestige skin era. Season 9 was when Riot started pushing event passes hard, and Prestige Blood Moon Aatrox was one of those skins you had to grind tokens for. No chromas on this one. Zero. Which makes sense because the whole point of a prestige is the single color variant.
The Blood Moon line at that point already had Thresh, Kalista, Kennen, a bunch of others. Aatrox joined with his base Blood Moon and this prestige simultaneously. (Random aside: my duo partner spent his entire winter break grinding the pass for this skin and I still hear about it.) Available now through Mythic Essence rotation, so if you missed the original event grind you can still pick it up. Special pricing, no standard RP cost since it cycles through the Mythic shop.
Might be overthinking it but I think the 2019 prestiges had a different energy than the later ones. They felt more exclusive back then. Fewer of them existed. Season 12 and 13 pumped out so many prestige skins that the concept lost some weight. This one still carries that early prestige cachet.
Where it sits in the Aatrox collection
Aatrox mains have options now. Lunar Eclipse is the popular pick in my Diamond games this season, and Odyssey Aatrox brought a completely different sci-fi direction. But Prestige Blood Moon Aatrox occupies this specific lane of “rare flex” that the others can’t touch. You lock this in during champ select and people notice. Seen maybe 5 of these all season in ranked.
The Mythic tier placement feels earned for the 2019 context. Was it groundbreaking? No. It was a gold chroma on steroids with VFX changes and a recall. But for early prestige standards it delivered. Compare it to some of the later prestiges that literally just slapped gold on a skin with zero particle work and this looks generous.
Been maining Aatrox on and off since the rework and I keep coming back to this skin specifically when I want to feel like I’m playing something most people don’t have. Last Tuesday I had a game where I dove their backline at dragon, popped ult, and the golden wings spread out right as I got the triple. Three of my teammates pinged the skin in post-game chat. That kind of reaction is what prestige skins are supposed to generate.
Should you buy it? If you’re an Aatrox one-trick and you see it rotate into the Mythic shop, absolutely. The golden VFX on Q and ult alone justify it for mains who want to stand out. If you play Aatrox once every 30 games, skip it and grab Lunar Eclipse instead. Top pick for Aatrox mains who value rarity alongside actual visual quality, and not just a flex for the sake of flexing. The skin earns the attention it gets.
