First time I saw Pentakill Sona back in season 1, I thought Riot lost their minds putting the quietest enchanter in the game into a metal band. Played maybe 40 games with it that first month. Could be wrong here but I think this is still one of the most personality-flipping skins they ever made for any champion. Sona goes from floating around with her ethereal harp to shredding on a keytar looking like she walked off stage at a festival. Wild concept for 2010.
What Pentakill Sona actually brings
So the big thing here is the instrument swap. Sona’s etwahl gets replaced with a heavy metal keyboard, and it changes the entire read of the champion on the Rift. The VFX got a rework at some point, new particle effects on her Q poke and W heal that lean into the rock aesthetic. Purple and dark energy instead of the usual blue-green aura stuff. Looks clean in lane.
Not gonna lie, the model itself holds up surprisingly well for a skin from September 21, 2010. Sona gets this full rocker outfit, black leather, spiked accessories, the whole deal. Her hair goes from the usual blue to stark white which reads really well against dark Summoner’s Rift backgrounds. Been running this in Diamond support games and the silhouette is distinct enough that you notice it immediately in teamfights.
Voice lines stay base, no new VO which makes sense for a 975 RP Standard tier skin from that era. The new VFX carry the weight though. Her Q sends out these darker energy bolts, her E speed boost has a different trail. Honestly its fine for what you get at this price point. The recall is standard too, no custom animation, but again this dropped in 2010 when custom recalls werent a thing yet.
The Pentakill line and where Sona fits
Pentakill as a skinline is one of Riot’s longest running thematic projects. Started with Sona, Mordekaiser, Yorick, Karthus, and Olaf. Real band. Actual albums released. Not sure if it’s just me but the Pentakill skins have this cohesion that a lot of newer skinlines struggle to match.
Pan Chengwei handled the splash art. They captured this stage performance energy, Sona front and center with her keyboard, purple lighting, looks like a concert poster you’d actually hang up (random aside: had this as my desktop background for like two years in college). The Pentakill line later expanded with Pentakill III: Lost Chapter versions for several champions including another Sona skin, but this original holds a special place.
975 RP for the price. No chromas available for this one. Shop has it permanently, so you can pick it up whenever. For context, 975 puts it in that weird middle ground where it costs more than a basic recolor but less than a 1350 Epic. Back in 2010 this was considered premium pricing, the skin economy was completely different then. Season 9 I think or 10 dont remember exactly when they shifted the standard to 1350.
Should you pick up Pentakill Sona?
Real verdict: if you’re a Sona main looking for something with actual personality, Pentakill Sona delivers. Played this in bot lane specifically last Tuesday around 2 AM during a late night ranked session and my ADC immediately complimented the skin in chat. That never happens with base Sona.
The competition within Sona’s skin catalog is real though. Odyssey Sona exists. Star Guardian Sona exists. DJ Sona is a whole Ultimate skin. But Pentakill Sona has this edge factor that none of those match. Best pick for Sona players who want to look like they have an attitude while spamming W on their backline. 975 RP feels fair for what you get, especially considering the VFX updates it received over the years.
Skip this if you already own Pentakill III: Lost Chapter Sona since there’s thematic overlap. But if you want the OG Pentakill experience, the one that started the whole band fantasy, this is it. Been maining Sona with this skin on and off for years and it still hits different when you lock in with the full Pentakill comp in your team. Three things stood out after all this time: the keytar model, the dark VFX on poke, and that splash. Simple change – huge impact on how the champion feels to play.
