First time I locked in Pentakill III: Lost Chapter Sona was right after the skin dropped in September 2021, and I remember sitting there in champ select thinking Riot finally gave Sona mains the metal fantasy they deserved. Not the original Pentakill look, which felt dated even back then. This one hits different. The whole vibe shifted from generic rock band to something closer to symphonic black metal, and on Sona specifically that contrast between her kit and the aesthetic just works. Played maybe 40 games with it that first week alone.
What Pentakill III: Lost Chapter Sona actually changes
So the VFX overhaul is the main draw here. Her Q aura pulses with these dark violet and teal energy waves that read super clean in lane. Not gonna lie, the particles on Power Chord proc feel heavier than base, like theres actual weight behind the auto. The W heal has this spectral green shimmer layered under the shield that I think looks better than most of her other Epic skins manage.
E speed boost trails dark energy behind your team. Subtle but noticeable in teamfights when you’re trying to peel for your ADC and the visual feedback helps you track who got the buff. Her R – Crescendo – launches this massive wave of dark musical energy across the lane. Honestly the ult VFX alone carries the skin for me. Seen it catch a full backline in dragon pit last season and the visual was chef’s kiss.
The recall animation goes hard. Sona shreds on her etwahl like she’s headlining a concert, dark flames erupting around her. One of the better recall animations at the 1350 RP tier if you ask me. Voice lines stay base, no new VO, which is expected for an Epic skin but still slightly disappointing given how much personality the Pentakill theme could have added.
(Random aside: I have the recall animation as a clip saved on my desktop because my duo thought it was a custom skin the first time they saw it.)
The Pentakill III line and where Sona fits
Pentakill III: The Lost Chapter dropped as a full skinline tied to Riot’s second Pentakill album. September 9, 2021, right in the middle of season 11. The whole batch came out together – Mordekaiser, Yorick, the full band roster got new looks.
David Villegas and West Studio handled the splash artwork. They cooked. The splash captures Sona mid-performance with this apocalyptic stage lighting that I keep coming back to. Might be overthinking it but the composition feels more dynamic than most Sona splashes, where she’s usually just floating serenely.
The Pentakill III line as a whole leans into darker territory than the original Pentakill skins. More occult imagery, more elaborate costumes. Sona specifically got armor plating on her outfit mixed with flowing cloth, and the etwahl redesign looks like something forged in the Shadow Isles. The skinline works because Riot committed to the aesthetic across the board instead of half-measures.
8 chromas total for this one. Obsidian is my go-to because the all-black palette makes the VFX pop harder against the model. Tanzanite hits a deep purple that reads like a proper dark mage fantasy, and honestly Ruby works too if you want the classic red metal look. Could be wrong here but I think the base color scheme is still the strongest of the bunch. Permanent shop skin, 1350 RP, available any time you want it.
Is Pentakill III: Lost Chapter Sona worth 1350 RP?
Real verdict: if you play Sona in ranked at all, this is a strong pickup. Been running this as my primary Sona skin since around late season 12 and I dont see myself switching off it. The VFX are clean without being distracting, the recall is top tier for the price, and the model redesign gives Sona an edge she doesn’t normally have.
There’s competition though. Odyssey Sona exists. PsyOps exists. Star Guardian exists. But Pentakill III: Lost Chapter Sona fills a niche none of those touch – the dark, aggressive aesthetic for a champion who’s usually all pastels and grace. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. If you’re a Sona one-trick climbing through Diamond or you just want something that looks menacing in the bot lane specifically, this is the pick. Skip it if you already own DJ Sona and don’t care about variety, but for everyone else spamming support in solo queue this season? Worth it. S-tier Sona cosmetic, no question.
