Pentakill III: Lost Chapter Karthus

Been maining Karthus on and off since season 6 and this is the skin that finally made me stop rotating back to Lightsbane every other game. Pentakill III: Lost Chapter Karthus dropped and I locked it in for maybe 40 straight ranked games that September. The whole metal fantasy just works on Karthus in a way that feels obvious in hindsight. Like yeah, the Deathsinger should absolutely be fronting a spectral metal band.

Visual and VFX changes on this Karthus skin

The model rework here is solid for an Epic. Karthus gets this dark rocker aesthetic with spiked armor plating and glowing rune-covered instruments woven into his design. The color palette leans heavy into deep purples and neon green accents. Honestly not gonna lie, it reads way cleaner on the Rift than the splash might suggest.

New VFX across the board. His Q, Lay Waste, drops with this electric green pulse that actually feels snappier to land. Could be placebo but the detonation circle seems slightly more readable than base. The W wall gets a sick musical distortion wave look. E, Defile, pulses out these concentric sound waves that give you a real sense of the damage zone. Pretty useful in teamfights where tracking your toggle range matters.

The R is where it gets good though. Requiem channels with this full stadium concert buildup, green energy pillars shooting up around Karthus like hes center stage at Worlds. The sound design layers in these heavy metal riffs that build during the channel. Played a game last Thursday around midnight where I ulted from fountain after dying in a dragon fight and the whole sequence just hit different at 2 AM with headphones on. (Random aside: the ult sound is genuinely my notification tone now.)

New recall animation too. Karthus shreds on a spectral guitar and the crowd goes wild. No new voice lines though, kept the base VO. Standard for 1350 RP Epics.

The Pentakill III line and release context

Pentakill III: Lost Chapter Karthus released September 9, 2021. Part of the Pentakill III: The Lost Chapter skinline, which was the third wave of Pentakill skins tied to Riot’s virtual metal album. David Villegas and West Studio handled the artwork, and they cooked on this one. The splash captures Karthus mid-performance with this massive energy eruption behind him.

The Pentakill III: The Lost Chapter line gave us updated versions of the whole band plus some new additions. Karthus fits the frontman role naturally. His whole kit is about channeling death and the metal concert theme layers over that perfectly.

8 chromas available. Obsidian is my go-to, strips the color down to this muted black and grey that reads like a blackened metal album cover. Tanzanite hits hard too with the deep purple shift. Ruby exists if you want the red look but I think it clashes with the green VFX a bit. Most of the others are fine but those two carry the chroma set. Shop has it at 1350 RP, permanent availability.

Is Pentakill III: Lost Chapter Karthus worth 1350 RP?

Real verdict: this is a top pick for Karthus mains. Maybe not the single best Karthus skin since Arcana gives it real competition, but Pentakill III: Lost Chapter Karthus earns its Epic price tag. The VFX clarity on Q alone makes it worth considering for ranked. Not sure if it’s just me but I feel like I land more Qs with this skin. Placebo? Probably. Do I care? No.

If you play Karthus in the jungle the recall animation gets old since you see it constantly, fair warning. But for mid lane where you’re dying in teamfights and pressing R from passive, the whole audio-visual package during Requiem is S-tier. Spammed this in Diamond all of season 12 and keep coming back to it.

1350 RP feels fair for what you get. Full VFX suite, clean model, great sound design. Skip it if you already own Arcana and dont play enough Karthus to justify two skins. But for anyone climbing with the Deathsinger as a main, this one belongs in the collection. The metal fantasy is just too perfect on this champion to pass up.
