First time I saw Hillbilly Gragas was back in season 1 when a buddy locked him in during a normal game and I genuinely thought it was a custom skin. The whole hillbilly aesthetic on a champion who already chugs barrels felt so on-the-nose that it just worked. Been a soft spot in my Gragas rotation ever since, even though I rotate between like four skins depending on my mood.
What Hillbilly Gragas Actually Changes
Real talk though, this is a Standard tier skin from 2010. You’re not getting new VFX or fancy particle work. What you get is a full model swap that turns Gragas into a barefoot, overalls-wearing, straw-hat rocking country boy with a jug instead of his usual barrel. Voice lines stay base. No new recall animation either.
The jug is the highlight. Honest. When you Q into a teamfight and this tiny clay jug rolls across the lane, theres something inherently funny about it. The auto attacks feel the same, the W still has him chugging, but the visual of this massive dude in torn overalls body slamming into the backline never gets old. Played maybe 40 games with this skin last month in Diamond and the amount of “nice skin” comments in all chat was surprisingly high for something this old.
No new animations on E or R. The ult still launches the same projectile shape, just reskinned to match the jug aesthetic. Pre-6 laning looks identical to base Gragas in terms of gameplay reads. Not gonna lie, sometimes I forget I even have the skin equipped until I see the splash during loading screen.
The Legacy Line and Where This Skin Fits
Hillbilly Gragas dropped August 1, 2010. That puts it in the first year of League’s life. Part of the Legacy catalog, which means Riot considers it a classic. Available now in the shop for 520 RP, which is about as cheap as skins get outside of the 390 tier.
520 RP feels fair for what you get. You’re paying for the model change and the comedy factor. Nothing more, nothing less. No chromas to speak of, so what you see is what you get. (Random aside: my friend group calls this skin “Uncle Gragas” and it stuck so hard I cant remember the actual name half the time.)
The Legacy skinline is less of a thematic line and more of a timestamp. Riot groups their oldest skins under this banner. Hillbilly Gragas sits alongside other early designs that leaned hard into humor over spectacle. Season 1 Riot had a different vibe entirely.
Should You Pick Up Hillbilly Gragas?
Could be wrong here but I think this is one of those skins that ages better than it should. The simplicity works in its favor. Last Tuesday I was duo queue with my jungle main around 1 AM and he pointed out that Hillbilly Gragas has more personality in the splash alone than some 1350 RP skins have in their entire kit. Hard to disagree.
If you main Gragas and you want something that feels different from the base without going full space theme or high noon cowboy, this is your pick. 520 RP is pocket change. Skip it if you need flashy particles or custom recall animations, because Hillbilly Gragas does not have those. Simple change – huge impact on the feel.
Best budget Gragas skin full stop. Oktoberfest gets more hype and Gragas Caskbreaker has the newer model, but Hillbilly has the charm factor that none of the others touch. Worth 520 RP if you main Gragas, and honestly even if you just play him once a month in ARAM. The jug alone carries. Been daily driving this on and off since season 3 I think, maybe season 4, and the comedy value has not dropped one bit. Lock it in.
