First time I saw Dark Valkyrie Diana in a loading screen was back in like season 3, maybe early season 4. Could be wrong here but I remember thinking it looked way more menacing than base Diana. The darker palette, the wings on the armor, the whole vibe just hit different compared to what Riot was putting out in 2012. Been running this skin on and off for years and I keep coming back to it when I want Diana to feel less lunar priestess and more straight up warrior.

What actually changes on Dark Valkyrie Diana

So this is a 975 RP Standard tier skin, which means you’re not getting a full VFX overhaul or new voice lines. Voice stays default. No new recall animation either. But what you do get is a complete model redesign and some tweaked VFX that honestly punch above the price point.

The armor goes from Diana’s usual silver-and-purple Lunari look to this dark metallic set with wing-like shoulder plates. Feels like something out of a Norse mythology textbook crossed with League’s own Fables skinline aesthetic. The crescent blade gets a darker treatment too, reads more like forged iron than moonstone. In teamfights specifically, the Q arc has a slightly different color tint that I think makes it easier to track. Not a huge gameplay advantage or anything but after spamming this in Diamond for a few weeks last March I noticed I was landing Qs more consistently. Probably placebo. Probably.

Her passive proc still has that satisfying cleave but the coloring shifts darker. The E pull-in keeps the base particles mostly, and W shield orbs orbit with a subtly different hue. Nothing groundbreaking for abilities individually but the overall package makes Diana feel heavier on the Rift. Like she means business when she dives the backline pre-6 to chunk someone out.

The Fables line and release context

Dark Valkyrie Diana dropped August 7, 2012. Thats actually right around when Diana herself launched, so this was one of her release skins. Pan Chengwei handled the splash and honestly they captured something special with the pose and lighting. The wings spread behind her, blade raised, whole composition just works.

Part of the Fables skinline, which is one of Riot’s smaller thematic sets. Not as flashy as Spirit Blossom or Arcana but the Fables line has this grounded mythological feel that suits Diana perfectly. (Random aside: the splash has been my desktop wallpaper at least three separate times over the years.)

No chromas available for this one. Shop has it at 975 RP permanently so you can grab it whenever. No new VO which is expected at this price tier. Standard voice, no new lines.

Should you buy Dark Valkyrie Diana?

Real verdict: if you main Diana and you want something that isnt base but dont want to drop 1820 on a Legendary, Dark Valkyrie Diana sits in a good spot. 975 RP feels fair for what you get. The model work is clean, the VFX tweaks add just enough, and the Fables fantasy gives Diana a personality shift that base cant match.

Not gonna lie, there’s better Diana skins now. Blood Moon and Sentinel both offer more in terms of raw visual changes. But Dark Valkyrie has that OG energy. Played maybe 40 games with it last Tuesday through the weekend and it still holds up in lane, in jungle clear scenarios, wherever you take her. Skip it if you already own two or three Diana skins. Lock it in if you’re climbing with Diana and want something clean without breaking the bank. Simple change – huge impact on how she reads in game.
