Coven Zyra

Not gonna lie, the second I saw Coven Zyra on PBE I knew Riot finally gave Zyra the skin she deserved. Something about dark witchy aesthetics and a plant mage just clicks on a fundamental level. Been maining Zyra support on and off since season 6, and this skin immediately replaced Dragon Sorceress in my rotation. The gothic horror vibe reads so cleanly against the Rift that I sometimes forget I’m playing the same champion.

What Coven Zyra actually brings to the table

The VFX overhaul here is what sells it. Her plants spawn with this dark violet energy that looks genuinely threatening in lane. Q drops thorns that pulse with a deep purple glow, and the W seeds have this ritual circle effect underneath them before they sprout. Honestly its one of the best seed animations across all Zyra skins. E root vines trail dark magic particles that make it way easier to appreciate the hitbox visually, which I think actually helped my accuracy in Diamond games last season.

The recall animation deserves its own mention. Zyra channels this dark coven ritual, plants growing around her in a circle while she floats upward. Clean execution. Voice lines stay base, no new VO, but the skin doesnt need it because the visual identity carries everything.

Could be wrong here but I think the auto attack particles feel slightly snappier than base. Probably placebo. Either way the purple projectiles read better against most map skins than her default green, especially during chaotic teamfights where you’re trying to peel for your ADC and track six different plant targets at once.

(Random aside: my duo partner refuses to play with me when I use this skin because he says the plants distract him from cs. His problem not mine.)

The Coven line and where Zyra fits

Released April 16, 2020. Mid season 10. Jessica ‘OwleyCat’ Oyhenart nailed the splash, the composition with Zyra hovering above her thorned throne is one of the stronger pieces in the entire Coven catalog. The Coven skinline is honestly one of Riot’s most consistent thematic sets. Morgana, LeBlanc, Lissandra, Camille – they all hit. But Zyra might be the champion who fits the Coven fantasy most naturally. Plant witch becoming dark coven witch? That’s not a stretch, thats just her lore with better lighting.

9 chromas total. Obsidian is the standout for me, goes full dark and the plants look almost necrotic. Dark Ritual is the event exclusive and it leans into a deep teal with crimson accents that I think reads better in-game than the base purple. Pearl exists for the people who want a lighter take but kinda feels like it fights against the whole dark coven identity.

This Epic tier skin sits at 1350 RP. Shop has it, permanent availability, no vault nonsense. For what you get with the VFX package and the recall, 1350 feels fair for what you get. Played maybe 200 games with this across seasons 10 through 13 and it hasnt gotten old.

Should you pick up Coven Zyra?

Straight talk: if you play Zyra in any capacity this is the skin to own. I’ve tried every Zyra skin in extended ranked sessions and Coven just hits different in ways that are hard to articulate. The plant VFX alone make it worth locking in. Last Tuesday I had a game where my E root caught three people at dragon pit and the dark vine effect looked absolutely clean on the replay.

The only competition is Crystal Rose if you prefer the elegant aesthetic, or Crime City Nightmare if you want something edgier. But Coven sits right in the sweet spot. Not too flashy, not too subtle. Might be overthinking it but I genuinely believe the darker plant colors give you a slight visual advantage in bot lane specifically because they blend less with the river terrain.

Skip the Pearl chroma, grab Obsidian or Dark Ritual, and enjoy what I think is the best Zyra skin full stop. Been running this in Diamond for multiple seasons and I keep coming back to it over every new release. 1350 RP well spent for mains, and even if you only pull Zyra out as a counterpick into engage supports, it makes every Q poke and teamfight ult feel that much better. Top pick for Zyra mains, no question.
