First time I saw Overlord Malzahar loading in, I thought someone was running a custom skin. The purple and gold armor plating looked way too clean for a 975 RP skin from 2011. Been maining Malzahar on and off since season 4 and this one keeps pulling me back. Not sure if it’s just me but the model reads better than half the skins released three years later.

What Overlord Malzahar actually changes

So this is a Standard tier skin at 975 RP, which means you get a full model overhaul and updated VFX but no new voice lines. Voice stays default. The model swaps Malzahar’s prophet robes for this heavy armored overlord look. Think corrupted warlord energy. Gold trim on dark purple plates, a more aggressive silhouette overall.

The VFX tweaks surprised me. Call of the Void (Q) has a darker particle effect that feels heavier when it lands. Null Zone (W) gets a subtle color shift that actually makes the pool easier to track in teamfights. Malefic Visions (E) bouncing between minions looks slightly more menacing. Could be wrong here but I think the R suppression beam reads a bit thicker too. For a skin this old, the visual updates hold up better than you’d expect.

Played maybe 30 games with this last month in Diamond and the auto attacks feel clean. Thats probably placebo but I swear the projectile clarity is slightly better than base Malzahar. The voidlings also get the armored treatment which is a nice touch when you’re pushing a side lane and your little army looks coordinated.

Release history and the Definitely Not line

Overlord Malzahar dropped September 19, 2011. Early season 1 era. Kienan ‘Knockwurst’ Lafferty nailed the splash, the composition puts Malzahar front and center commanding his void army. Strong piece.

The skin sits under the Definitely Not skinline which is a weird fit honestly. Most Definitely Not skins are comedic disguise skins. Overlord Malzahar plays it completely straight. Dark overlord fantasy, zero comedy. Might be overthinking it but I feel like this got retroactively tagged into that line and it doesnt quite belong. Regardless the skin stands on its own.

(Random aside: I used the splash as my Discord avatar for like six months back in 2022 and nobody even recognized it as a League skin. People thought it was some MMO boss art.)

No chromas available for this one. Shop has it permanently at 975 RP so you can pick it up whenever. Standard voice, no new lines, which is fine because Malzahar’s base VO already carries that menacing prophet tone that fits the overlord aesthetic.

Should you buy Overlord Malzahar?

Real verdict: for 975 RP this is solid. Not the flashiest Malzahar skin in the lineup. Battle Boss and Hextech both outclass it on raw effects. But Overlord has this clean, understated vibe that ages well. Last Tuesday around 2 AM I was grinding ranked and locked in Overlord over Snow Day just because the darker palette felt right for a late night session.

975 RP feels fair for what you get. If you one-trick Malzahar and want variety in your rotation, this belongs there. The VFX updates give it enough polish to not feel dated. Skip it if you already own Hextech or Beezahar and only play Malzahar occasionally. But for mains who want that serious dark fantasy look without dropping 1350 on something newer? Overlord Malzahar earns its spot. Been coming back to this skin for years and I think that says enough.
