Olaf was basically built for a skin like this. The whole character point – he’s hunting for a death worthy enough to break his prophecy – so strapping on dragon-bone armor and charging something that can actually kill him just fits. Been maining Olaf on and off for four seasons and Dragonslayer Olaf is where I keep landing. Bought it the week it dropped, January 30, 2020, and base skin hasn’t loaded on my Olaf since.

What changes with Dragonslayer Olaf

This Epic at 1350 RP delivers real VFX changes. Not a texture-only situation. His axes shift to a dragon-bone design with a warm amber glow that reads clearly in a teamfight. The Q throw leaves a heavier particle trail than base, and landing axes feel more impactful just from the hit effect redesign.

The recall is the standout piece. Olaf drives both axes into the ground and a dragon skull fragment cracks under the impact. Clean animation, satisfying loop, and it runs long enough that you actually catch it in lane between ganking runs. (sidebar for Olaf mains specifically: you know why a good recall matters when you’re hovering at 20% HP waiting for lane prio.) No new VO though. Voice stays base. That’s the one place where Epic skins leave you wanting more.

Ult VFX got the upgrade treatment too. When Olaf pops R and dives the backline, thats when the amber glow intensifies enough that your team reads the signal. Small thing – big impact in a fast teamfight. Real talk though: base Olaf’s ult animation has almost no visual feedback by comparison.

Dragon World, the artists, and January 2020

Dragonslayer Olaf dropped January 30, 2020 as part of the Dragon World skinline. Xiao Guang Sun and West Studio handled the splash – they nailed that Olaf pre-6 energy, him mid-charge against something three times his size with zero hesitation. Banger splash. Part of what sold me immediately.

Dragon World is one of Riot’s older recurring themes. Dragonslayer Pantheon, Vayne, Braum, Xin Zhao, and others all share the same universe. Olaf fits better than most of that lineup. He’s not a guardian-type champion. Making him a hunter rather than a protector reads correctly for the kit – the berserker energy translates.

8 chromas and which ones actually matter

There’s 8 chromas total. Sapphire is the easy recommendation – flips everything to cold blue, and I genuinely think it looks cleaner than the base skin. The amber VFX contrast harder against blue armor than they do against the original brown-and-gold palette. Obsidian goes near-black, which suits anyone who hates warm tones. Meteorite is the sleeper pick: earthy brown, more brutal than heroic, and it changes the whole read of the skin.

Ruby is predictable. Amethyst feels off for a Dragonslayer skin thematically – doesn’t match the hunter fantasy. The Sapphire chroma is borderline mandatory if you’re spamming this in ranked.

Is Dragonslayer Olaf worth 1350 RP?

The honest take: yes, if Olaf is a champion you actually play. The VFX are useful feedback during a dive – you can track his axes on-screen better than base – and the recall is one of his better ones across the whole skin catalog. Not sure if it’s just me but Epic skins from this patch era tend to age better than newer releases. Cleaner palettes, more readable in-game.

Still in the shop, no vault, no Hextech-only situation. Could be wrong here but Dragonslayer Olaf is probably the pick if you can only own one Olaf skin. Splashed on Sapphire chroma about a week after launch and have not regretted it once. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get.
