First game I played with Battle Queen Janna was a late night ranked session, maybe 1 AM on a Wednesday. Locked her in, loaded the splash, and just sat there for a second. West Studio nailed the splash. The regal armor, the floating chess pieces, the whole royal battlefield aesthetic. Felt like Janna finally got the prestige treatment she deserved after years of solid but uninspired skins. Not gonna lie, I wasnt expecting much from a support skin in a themed batch, but this one surprised me.

The visual overhaul and what you notice in game

Battle Queen Janna runs at 1350 RP as an Epic tier skin, and it earns it. New model is a full redesign with ornate golden armor plating over deep navy and white fabric. Janna looks like she commands armies instead of just shielding your ADC from a Draven axe. The crown piece is subtle but clean, not overdone like some of Riot’s designs where they throw every particle they have at the screen.

VFX got a complete rework. Her Q tornado swirls with golden chess-piece fragments and these sharp geometric particles. Looks crisp against the Rift, especially in river fights where the darker background makes the gold pop. W sends out a regal projectile that reads well in lane. Honestly the E shield is where it shines though. Wraps your carry in this luminous golden barrier that actually looks protective. Been running this in Diamond support games and the shield visual clarity is better than most of her other skins.

The recall animation. Big highlight. Janna summons a chess board, moves pieces around with her wind magic, then strikes a victory pose. Short enough that it doesnt feel drawn out but detailed enough to notice. (Random aside: my duo partner who plays Janna asked me to gift him this skin purely because of the recall.) No new voice lines, kept the base VO. Standard for an Epic.

One thing that caught me off guard in my first teamfight with it – the R channel has this expanding golden aura that reads differently from base. Could be wrong here but I think the healing circle is slightly more visible to teammates, which matters when you’re peeling for your backline in a messy dragon pit fight.

Battle Queens, release context, and those chromas

Battle Queen Janna dropped December 10, 2020. Right at the tail end of season 10 into preseason. The Battle Queens skinline was Riot’s attempt at a chess and royalty themed set, and Janna fit the fantasy naturally. Wind queen commanding the board. She launched alongside Battle Queen Katarina, Diana, and Qiyana in that batch.

The Battle Queens line has this specific visual language: chess motifs, regal armor, gemstone accents. Janna wears it well. Better than some of the other champions in the set honestly. Kinda feels like the skin was designed around Janna’s silhouette first and the theme second, which is how it should work.

8 chromas total for Battle Queen Janna. Obsidian is my personal pick, the dark color scheme turns the whole regal vibe into something more menacing. Coronation hits different too, the pink and teal combo reads as the “special edition” chroma and it shows. Pearl is clean if you want the minimalist approach. Rest are fine but those three carry the set. Shop has it, permanent availability at 1350 RP.

Worth the RP or skip?

Verdict time. Battle Queen Janna sits in a weird spot because Janna has genuinely strong competition in her skin catalog. Star Guardian is the iconic pick. Sacred Sword has the anime crowd. Forecast is the meme legacy choice. So where does Battle Queen land?

I think it’s the best “serious” Janna skin. If you want Janna to look powerful and not cute or gimmicky, this is the one. Played maybe 50 games with it across two patches after release and kept coming back. The VFX clarity in teamfights is legit better than most of her catalog, and when you’re trying to peel and disengage in a chaotic late-game fight, visual clarity matters more than people give it credit for.

1350 RP feels fair for what you get. New model, full VFX, solid recall, 8 chromas if you want variety. For Janna mains specifically, this should be in your rotation. For the occasional Janna player who picks her when support gets autofilled, Star Guardian is probably the safer buy. But if you main her and you want something that looks like it belongs in a comp where you’re actually trying to climb? Battle Queen. Top pick for Janna mains. Been spamming this in Diamond since season 11 and thats not changing anytime soon.
