Renata Glasc Counters: Who Beats Renata Glasc

Updated for patch 26.21. Ability details come from Riot’s official game data for this patch.

Renata Glasc counters are engage supports who reach her before she can root, strip her shields, or block the Berserk from her ultimate. She’s a 550 range enchanter-mage with a root she can throw, a buff that delays an ally’s death, a pair of shielding missiles and Hostile Takeover, a wave that sends enemies Berserk. The picks that beat her catch her first, because she has no dash or escape of her own.

The five below come from her ability text and theirs. We left win rates aside.

Why is Renata Glasc hard to counter?

  • Passive: her attacks deal bonus damage and mark enemies, and her allies deal bonus damage to marked targets.
  • Handshake (Q): a missile that roots the first enemy hit; recast to throw that unit in a direction. Cooldown 16 seconds.
  • Bailout (W): buffs an allied champion to fight harder, delaying their death and potentially saving them if they score a takedown. Cooldown 28 seconds at rank 1, 24 at rank 5.
  • Loyalty Program (E): two chemtech missiles that shield allies and damage and slow enemies. Cooldown 14/13/12/11/10.
  • Hostile Takeover (R): a wave of chemicals that makes every enemy hit go Berserk. Cooldown 150/130/110.

Renata turns your team’s engage against itself. Hostile Takeover sends a clumped team Berserk, Handshake roots and throws someone into your own champions, and Bailout keeps her carry alive past the point you thought they’d died. Loyalty Program adds shields on top, so even a good engage can bounce off her carry (that’s a lot of fight-turning tools for one support). What she doesn’t have is any way to move. Every spell is a projectile or a buff, and a 550 range mage without a dash is easy prey for a support who closes the gap.

Which champions are the best Renata Glasc counters?

Blitzcrank

Static Field (R) strips the shields from enemies around Blitzcrank when activated, then damages and briefly silences them. Loyalty Program’s shields vanish, and a silenced Renata can’t cast Bailout or Hostile Takeover for that moment. Rocket Grab (Q) drags her out from behind her minions, and Power Fist (E) doubles his next attack’s damage while popping the target into the air. Overdrive (W) gives a big burst of Move Speed and Attack Speed. Mana Barrier (passive) shields him at low Health. Honestly, one hook on a champion with no dash is often the whole lane.

Leona

Zenith Blade (E) fires a sword image through enemies, briefly immobilizes the last champion it struck and pulls Leona straight to them. Renata can’t dash away from that. Shield of Daybreak (Q) stuns on Leona’s next attack, and Solar Flare (R) stuns enemies at the centre of its beam while slowing the edges. Eclipse (W) raises her Damage Reduction, Armor and Magic Resist, so Loyalty Program’s poke barely matters. Sunlight (passive) lets Leona’s allies deal extra damage to targets she just hit. In practice, Leona lands on Renata before Handshake is even off cooldown.

Nautilus

Depth Charge (R) sends a shockwave after one target, knocking up everyone in its path and stunning the target on arrival. It follows Renata, so her lack of mobility is irrelevant. Dredge Line (Q) pulls the two of them together, Staggering Blow (passive) roots on the first attack against each target, and Riptide (E) slows in three waves. Titan’s Wrath (W) shields Nautilus while his attacks splash nearby enemies. Does Bailout save her carry? Maybe, but Renata herself still gets locked down.

Morgana

Morgana’s E, Black Shield, soaks up disables and magic damage on one ally until something breaks it. Hostile Takeover’s Berserk is a disable, and so is Handshake’s root, so a shielded carry ignores both. Put the shield on whoever Renata is likely to hit, usually the ADC. Dark Binding (Q) roots from range, matching Renata’s own root, and Tormented Shadow (W) punishes a support standing still behind minions. Soul Shackles (R) chains nearby enemies and stuns those who don’t break free. To be fair, the shield covers only one ally, so Renata will aim Takeover at the group.

Thresh

Death Sentence (Q) chains an enemy and pulls them toward Thresh, and a second activation pulls Thresh to them. Against a support with no dash, that hook ends trades. Dark Passage (W) throws a lantern that shields nearby allies, and your carry can click it to dash to Thresh, escaping a Handshake throw or a Berserk team. Flay (E) knocks enemies in the direction of the swing. The Box (R) fences off an area. Damnation (passive) grows his Armor and Ability Power from souls he collects.

How do you play the lane against Renata Glasc?

  • Stay behind a minion. Handshake roots the first enemy hit, and a minion in the way catches it.
  • Don’t clump when Hostile Takeover is up. It turns everyone hit Berserk.
  • Focus her, not her carry. Bailout delays the carry’s death, but Renata has no escape.
  • Trade when Handshake is down. Its cooldown is 16 seconds at every rank.
  • Bring a way to remove shields if you can. Loyalty Program shields allies twice in one cast.

Which items counter Renata Glasc?

She relies on shields and crowd control. Serpent’s Fang’s Shield Reaver cuts shields on champions you damage, which weakens Loyalty Program. Mercury’s Treads add 30% Tenacity against the root and the Berserk. Mikael’s Blessing’s Purify cleanses an ally of crowd control except Airborne and Suppression, and Quicksilver Sash does the same for yourself, excluding Airborne. Grievous Wounds from Executioner’s Calling (800 gold) or Oblivion Orb cuts healing on her carry. Supports who want to run down a no-dash target can use Shurelya’s Battlesong, and the rest is in our League item list.

When is Renata Glasc at her weakest?

When Handshake misses. It’s a 16 second cooldown at every rank and her only way to stop an engage before Hostile Takeover, so a missed root leaves her exposed. Go in then (her carry will usually be standing right behind her).

The other window is after Hostile Takeover. At 150 seconds at rank 1 (110 at rank 3), it’s one of the longest ultimate cooldowns among supports, and without it she has no answer to a full team engage. Look, a Renata without her ultimate is a 550 range mage with a root and a shield. Fight her then.

Long story short, Renata Glasc counters reach her before she roots, strip her shields and block the Berserk.

FAQ

Who counters Renata Glasc the most?

Blitzcrank, Leona, Nautilus and Thresh, who catch a support with no dash, and Morgana, whose Black Shield blocks her root and Berserk.

Does Renata Glasc have a dash?

No. Her abilities are a root, a buff, shielding missiles and a Berserk wave. None of them move her.

Can Black Shield block Hostile Takeover?

Yes. Berserk counts as a disable, and Morgana’s shield eats disables until it pops.

What does Bailout do?

It buffs an allied champion to fight harder and delays their death, potentially saving them if they get a takedown.

How were these Renata Glasc counters picked?

We weighed Renata Glasc’s patch 26.21 kit against every support’s abilities and kept the five with the cleanest answers. No win-rate data was used.
