Woad King Darius

First time I saw Woad King Darius in a loading screen I thought someone modded the game. The blue war paint, the fur-lined armor, the whole Celtic warlord vibe. Completely different energy from base Darius. Been running this in Diamond ranked since maybe season 5 or 6, dont remember exactly, and it still gets comments in champ select sometimes.

The Woad treatment on Darius

So the big thing here is the model rework. Darius trades his Noxian plate armor for something that looks like it belongs in a Nordic battlefield. Thick furs, tribal markings across his chest and arms, and his axe gets this weathered iron look with blue engravings running down the blade. Solid redesign.

VFX got touched up too. His Q spin has this faint blue trail that reads cleaner than base in teamfights. Not a massive change but enough that you notice it mid-lane. The W empowered auto carries a blue flash on impact. Could be wrong here but I think the passive bleed stacks show slightly different too, though that might just be the color palette tricking my eyes.

The recall animation is where this skin quietly wins. Darius plants his axe into the ground and does this war cry pose. Short, aggressive, fits the character. Way better than sitting through a generic recall. (Random aside: I use it after every solo kill in lane, its basically a taunt at this point.)

Voice lines stay base. No new VO. Standard for a 975 RP skin from 2013 so thats expected. Chuck Kourouklis still does the voice work and honestly base Darius voice is already intimidating enough.

Where Woad King fits in

Released June 16, 2013. Season 3 era. Joshua ‘HUGEnFAST’ Brian Smith nailed the splash, the composition with Darius standing over fallen warriors in the snow is one of my favorite older splashes in the game.

The Woad skinline is small and kind of forgotten. Woad Scout Quinn exists too. Riot leaned into this Celtic warrior fantasy for a few champions and then moved on. Kinda feels like they could revisit it with modern VFX standards and it would slap. The theme works naturally on Darius because hes already this brutal frontline engage champion who wants to dive the backline and start dunking.

No chromas on this one. Zero. For 975 RP in 2024 standards that feels a little bare but remember this dropped over a decade ago. Shop has it permanently so you can pick it up whenever.

Is 975 RP worth it for Woad King?

Real verdict: this is a strong Standard tier skin that punches above its price. 975 RP feels fair for what you get. New model, updated VFX on abilities, a unique recall. Not gonna lie, I’ve gone back and forth between this and Dunkmaster over the years and Woad King wins when I want something that feels serious instead of meme-y.

Last Tuesday I played three ranked games in a row with this skin and had a Kayn on my team ask where to get it. That says something about a skin from 2013 still turning heads. If you main Darius and want a skin that isnt trying too hard, Woad King is the pick. Skip it if you already own God King or the newer legendaries, but for mains on a budget this is top pick for Darius. The blue war paint just hits different when you’re pulling someone into a five-stack ult at dragon pit.
