Woad Skins

Woad is one of those skinlines that feels like it crawled out of early League and never quite got the spotlight it deserved. Five skins total, all Standard tier, all released between 2010 and 2014. Celtic war paint, tribal armor, blue body markings. Kinda feels like Riot had a vision for this ancient warrior aesthetic and then just... moved on. Been playing since season 2 and I remember when Woad Ashe was genuinely one of the cooler skins you could run in ranked. The line has this raw, primal energy that none of the newer flashy skinlines even try to replicate. Not gonna lie, there's something refreshing about skins that dont rely on particle effects to carry them.

What Sets the Woad Line Apart

The Woad skinline pulls from Celtic and Pictish warrior culture. Blue war paint, leather armor, fur-trimmed cloaks, tribal tattoos. Everything looks hand-crafted in a way that most modern skinlines just skip over entirely. No neon particles. No galaxy-brain VFX. Just warriors covered in woad dye ready to fight on the Rift.

Could be wrong here but I think the visual coherence is actually stronger than people give it credit for. Every champion in the line looks like they belong to the same tribe or warband. The color palette stays tight: deep blues, earth browns, weathered metals, occasional touches of gold or bone white. Compare that to something like the Arcana line where half the skins feel like they wandered in from a different universe. Woad keeps it grounded.

The splash arts have this painted quality to them. Not the hyper-rendered style you see in 2024 splashes. More like concept art that got promoted to final. Rough edges, visible brushstrokes in some cases. (Random aside: I used Woad Ashe's splash as my desktop background for like three months back in 2013.) The aesthetic reminds me of old fantasy book covers, the kind with barbarian warriors on the front that you'd find at a used bookstore.

What ties the whole line together is restraint. These skins change the model and textures but dont go crazy with new animations or sound effects. Standard tier across the board, priced between 520 and 975 RP. You get what you pay for, which is a clean reskin with strong thematic identity. No new voice lines, no recall animations, no fancy homeguard effects. Just the skin. Honestly that simplicity is part of the charm for me. When I lock in Woad King Darius at 1 AM after a losing streak, I'm not thinking about particle effects. I just want to look intimidating in lane.

One thing worth mentioning: the Woad skins predate the modern skinline branding. Riot wasnt even consistent about naming them. You've got "Woad Ashe" and "Woad King Darius" and "Woad Scout Quinn" following the pattern, but then Kayle's is "Battleborn Kayle" and Morgana's is "Exiled Morgana." Same aesthetic, same tribal warrior vibe, but the names don't match. Real talk though, if you line all five splashes up next to each other, they clearly belong together.

Best Woad Skins to Pick Up

Five skins isn't a huge roster to rank but there are clear standouts. Might be overthinking it but I've played enough games with each to have strong opinions here.

Woad King Darius is the best skin in the line. Full stop. The tribal war paint on Darius just works. He already looks like a bruiser who'd charge into a teamfight swinging, and the Woad aesthetic turns that up to eleven. The axe redesign with the bone and leather wrapping looks brutal. Been running this in Diamond games for a while now and I still think it holds up against his newer skins. 975 RP, which is the ceiling for this line. Worth it if you main Darius and want something that isn't Dunkmaster or God-King.

Woad Ashe comes in second. This was one of the first skins I ever bought back in season 3. The bow redesign is clean, the blue war paint across her face and arms sells the fantasy. She looks like she's been surviving in the Freljord wilderness for years. Not the polished queen you see in her default. A hunter. Priced at 520 RP when I got it, absolute steal. Still my go-to Ashe skin when I get autofilled ADC, even with all her newer options.

Woad Scout Quinn is underrated. Quinn already has a scouting/ranger identity and the Woad line leans into that perfectly. Valor gets the tribal treatment too, which is a nice touch. The leather armor and face paint make her look like she belongs in a warband with Darius and Ashe. Released in 2013 I think. 975 RP. Not her flashiest skin but one of her most thematically coherent ones.

Exiled Morgana is interesting. The "Exiled" name suggests she's been cast out from the tribe, which adds a narrative layer. The dark palette with hints of Woad blue works against Morgana's silhouette. Her wings get the tribal treatment with feather and bone details. Not sure if it's just me but she feels more menacing in this skin than in most of her catalog. The binding feels heavier when you land it in this skin. Placebo probably but I'll take it.

Battleborn Kayle sits at the bottom for me. Not because its bad, just because Kayle's model has been reworked so many times that early skins like this one feel a bit dated. The tribal armor looks good in the splash but in-game the read isn't as clear as the other four. Still, for 975 RP you get a solid fantasy. Kayle descending on your lane looking like a Pictish angel of war. Could be worse.

The Champion Roster and Who's Missing

Five champions: Ashe, Darius, Quinn, Kayle, Morgana. Not gonna lie, this is actually a well-curated roster for the theme. You've got your ADC in Ashe, your top lane juggernaut in Darius, your roaming scout in Quinn, and two hybrid fighters in Kayle and Morgana. Feels like a functional comp if you squint hard enough. Maybe not in ranked but definitely in an ARAM.

Ashe is the most natural fit. She's already Freljordian, already a tribal leader, already wields a bow. The Woad paint is practically canon for her. Darius is the surprise standout because you wouldn't immediately associate him with Celtic warriors, but the execution sells it completely. Quinn fits because of the scout/ranger archetype. She'd be right at home in a warband doing recon.

Kayle and Morgana are the slight stretches. Angelic champions in tribal war paint is a harder sell thematically, but both work visually. Morgana more than Kayle in my opinion.

Who should Riot add if they ever revisit this line? Tryndamere is the obvious pick. Barbarian king covered in woad? Come on. Olaf is another slam dunk, already has the berserker Viking thing going. Sejuani on Bristle with tribal armor would go hard. Maybe Udyr post-rework with the spirit animal forms reinterpreted through Celtic mythology. (Sidebar: I've wanted a Woad Tryndamere since like season 4. Riot if you're reading this, please.) Braum with a tribal shield could work for the support role. Volibear in his current form with Pictish markings would be terrifying.

But let's be realistic. Riot hasn't touched this line since 2014. That's over a decade of silence. The Woad aesthetic doesn't sell skins the way anime-inspired lines or music crossovers do. It's a niche thing for players who appreciate the grounded fantasy. Not sure we'll ever see a Woad skin again. Hope I'm wrong.

Tier and Price Breakdown

Every single Woad skin is Standard tier. No Epics. No Legendaries. No Mythics. This is a legacy skinline from an era when Riot's skin tiers were simpler and cheaper. Prices range from 520 RP (Woad Ashe) to 975 RP (Woad King Darius, Woad Scout Quinn, Battleborn Kayle). Exiled Morgana sits at 520 RP too.

The pricing tells you exactly what to expect. Model and texture changes only. No new particles, no new animations, no new voice lines. Voice stays default on all five. For 520-975 RP in 2024 that's a hard sell when Epic skins at 1350 give you the full package. But there's a certain audience that just wants a clean reskin without the visual noise. Played a game last Tuesday where my Darius had Woad King and the enemy Darius had God-King and honestly? Both looked good. Different vibes.

If you're thinking about picking up the whole set its surprisingly affordable. All five skins combined cost less than a single Ultimate skin. Maybe 3500-4000 RP total depending on sales. Not a bad way to fill out your collection if you play any of these champions. The 520 RP skins especially are impulse-buy territory. Seen them go on sale for like 260 RP, thats basically free.

Thing is, Standard tier skins from this era have a charm that modern skins at the same price point dont match. The art direction was different. Less focus on marketability, more focus on "what would this champion look like as a Celtic warrior." Simple question, clean execution. No chroma packs either on any of these five, which is a missed opportunity. A red woad variant for Darius? Blue and gold for Kayle? Riot left money on the table there.
