First time I saw PROJECT: Varus load into a game I thought someone was playing a different champion entirely. The silhouette reads completely different from base Varus. Sleeker, more mechanical, the kind of skin that makes you double-take in champ select. Been running this as my main Varus skin since around mid-season 11 and honestly it still holds up against everything Riot has dropped for him since.
What the skin actually changes
So the VFX overhaul is where PROJECT: Varus earns its 1350 RP. The Q charge-up has this layered digital energy effect that pulses as you hold it. Full charge looks clean. Release it and the arrow trails neon particles across the lane. Played maybe 40 games in a row with this last month and the Q visual never got old, which says something because I get bored of skins fast.
W passive stacks show up as these circuit-style marks on enemies. Subtle but readable. The proc on three stacks gives a satisfying burst animation. Not gonna lie, it feels like your damage hits harder even though obviously it doesnt. Placebo is real with good VFX.
E is probably the weakest ability visually. It gets the PROJECT treatment with the digital rain effect on the ground, but compared to Q and R it feels understated. Still better than base though. R is the highlight for me. Chain of Corruption fires out as this massive data stream, and when it spreads to nearby enemies the connecting tendrils have that signature PROJECT hex-pattern. Caught their Jinx and Lulu with it near dragon pit last Tuesday and the spread animation looked incredible.
The recall animation is new. Varus does this weapon recalibration sequence where the bow transforms. Standard PROJECT fare but well executed. Base voice lines, no changes. (Random aside: the auto attack sounds on this skin have a weight to them that base Varus completely lacks, might be why I cs better with it equipped.)
The PROJECT line and release context
PROJECT: Varus dropped May 27, 2021. Late into season 11, right when marksmen were in a weird spot in the meta. Svetlana Tigai and West Studio handled the splash, and they captured the cyberpunk aesthetic perfectly. The pose in the splash reads as aggressive, bow drawn, visor glowing. Portfolio-worthy piece.
The PROJECT skinline is one of Riot’s longest running themes at this point. Varus fits naturally into it. The corrupted Darkin angle translates well into the “augmented warrior fighting against their programming” narrative that PROJECT skins share. Kinda feels like Varus was always meant for this line, the internal conflict maps directly onto the PROJECT lore.
9 chromas total for this one. Obsidian is my go-to, the dark metallic finish makes him look like a stealth operative instead of a neon billboard. Reckoning has this orange and teal contrast that pops hard on the Rift, probably the most unique of the set. Pearl is clean if you want something lighter but I think it washes out the detail work on the model. Could be wrong here but I feel like most people sleep on Sapphire, the deep blue reads really well in teamfights when you need to track your character in a messy engage.
Is PROJECT: Varus worth 1350 RP?
Real verdict: this is a solid Epic skin. Not the flashiest Varus option anymore since Empyrean and Spirit Blossom exist, but PROJECT: Varus has a cleaner visual profile than both of those in my opinion. The VFX are readable without being distracting, which matters when you’re trying to land Q poke from max range in Diamond lobbies where people actually dodge.
Sits in the shop permanently. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. The new VFX on Q and R alone justify the price. If you main Varus and you like the tech-augmented aesthetic over the fantasy skins, this is your pick. Been season 13 or 14 I think when I last tried switching back to Arctic Ops for a week and I came right back to PROJECT. The auto attack animations just feel crisper. Might be overthinking it but the skin genuinely affects how smooth Varus plays. Top pick for Varus mains who want function over flash.
