First game I loaded this skin into was around 2 AM on a Tuesday, season 13. Queued up for ranked, locked in Varus ADC, and the loading screen splash hit different. Snow Moon Varus carries this cold, spiritual assassin energy that base Varus just doesnt have. The whole aesthetic leans into a winter-moon warrior fantasy and honestly it fits Varus better than half his other skins. Been maining Varus on and off since season 9 I think, and this one jumped straight into my rotation.

VFX and what Snow Moon actually changes

New VFX across the board. Q charge glows with this pale bluish-white energy, like moonlight condensed into an arrow. The trail it leaves feels cleaner than base, easier to track in teamfights when you’re trying to poke from the backline. Not sure if it’s just me but the Q animation feels slightly more satisfying to release at full charge with this skin on.

W passive proc marks show up as these crescent moon symbols on enemies. Subtle change but it reads well. E drops a frost-tinged ground effect that’s distinct enough from other Varus skins. Kinda feels like Riot put real effort into making each ability feel cohesive with the Snow Moon theme instead of just recoloring particles.

The R is where it gets good. Chains of Corruption fires out with this icy lunar energy, spreading tendrils that look like frozen vines. In a 5v5 engage where you land a multi-person ult, the visual payoff is solid. Played maybe 40 games with this skin the first two weeks it dropped and the ult VFX never got old. The recall animation is new too. Varus does this meditative pose with moon energy swirling around him. Clean execution, nothing over the top.

Voice lines stay base, no new VO. Standard for an Epic tier skin at 1350 RP. The model itself gets a full overhaul though. White and navy color scheme with golden accents. His bow redesign fits the spiritual warrior look. (Random aside: my duo partner thought this was a Legendary when he first saw the splash, thats how good the model looks for the price point.)

Snow Moon line and the details

Snow Moon Varus released May 18, 2023. Part of the Snow Moon skinline alongside Caitlyn, Kayn, Illaoi, and Ahri among others. The line pulls from East Asian moon deity aesthetics mixed with winter themes. Varus fits naturally into it. The corrupted archer channeling cold lunar power works better than some of the other champions they picked for the set.

Jeremy Chong and West Studio handled the artwork. They cooked on this one. The splash captures Varus mid-draw with moonlight reflecting off snow, arrows of light scattered in the background. Portfolio-worthy piece for sure.

8 chromas total. Amethyst is my go-to, the purple shifts the skin toward a darker mystical vibe that reads well against the Rift. Obsidian goes full shadow mode, almost looks like a different skin entirely. Pearl keeps the clean white aesthetic but brightens everything up. Could be wrong here but I think Ruby is the weakest of the bunch, the red clashes with the winter theme. The rest are fine but those three stand out. Been running Amethyst exclusively in my Diamond games this season and it just hits different from base.

Shop has it. Permanent availability at 1350 RP. No vault rotation nonsense, no loot exclusive gating.

Where Snow Moon sits in the Varus skin lineup

Varus has a stacked catalog. Cosmic Hunter, High Noon, PROJECT, Dark Star. Real talk though, Snow Moon Varus competes with the best of them. For an Epic skin it punches above its weight. The VFX package is cohesive, the model is clean, and the chromas give you options.

Compared to Dark Star Varus, Snow Moon trades the cosmic horror vibe for something more elegant. Against PROJECT, its less techy and more spiritual. High Noon is a completely different fantasy. Depends what you want from your Varus games. If you’re the type to poke from lane and scale into late-game teamfight ults, the Snow Moon VFX make those moments feel earned.

Skip it if you already own Cosmic Hunter and don’t need another Epic in the collection. But if you main Varus and want a skin that looks premium without Legendary pricing, this is the one. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. Spammed this in Diamond for a solid three months after release, dropped it briefly for High Noon, then came back. That says something.

Might be overthinking it but Snow Moon is arguably the best Epic-tier Varus skin. The whole package just works. VFX clarity in bot lane specifically is better than most of his catalog, which matters when you’re trying to cs and trade simultaneously. Top pick for Varus mains who want quality without the Legendary tax.
