Roblox Connection Problems: HRESULT 0x80072efd Fix

Verified November 7, 2026 · Status: live troubleshooting
Roblox general connection problems — “Could Not Connect”, “ID=17 Failure”, stuck loading, HRESULT 0x80072efd — always point to the client failing to talk to Roblox servers; the fix sequence is network → system clock → firewall/AV → DNS flush → reinstall, with specific steps for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android. Verified on 7 November 2026.

Symptom → cause → first action
| Symptom / message | Likely cause | First action |
|---|---|---|
| “Could Not Connect” | Network drop or firewall | Try different connection; disable firewall for 1 test |
| “ID=17 Failure” | Server handshake failure (Error 279-family) | Reinstall + clear AppData |
| HttpSendRequest failed 0x80072efd | SSL/TLS fail — clock or cert store | Sync OS clock; see per-platform table |
| Loading screen never finishes | DNS cache stale or ISP routing | DNS flush; change DNS to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 |
| Can enter Build/Edit but not Play | Only the Play-mode websocket is blocked | Firewall/AV allow for websockets |
| Random “experience has shut down” | Packet loss / ISP throttling | Test ping + packet loss; switch to wired if on Wi-Fi |
Fix 1 — verify your internet actually reaches Roblox
- Speedtest at fast.com — need ≥ 5 Mbps down for playable, ≥ 20 Mbps for high-fidelity experiences.
- Ping test — open terminal / command prompt and run
ping roblox.com. < 150 ms is fine; > 250 ms will visibly lag. - Try a second network (phone hotspot). If Roblox works there, it’s your home network.
- Try a second device on the same network. If that device works, it’s your device-side firewall/AV.
Fix 2 — DNS flush and switch per OS
| OS | Flush + switch |
|---|---|
| Windows | CMD as admin → ipconfig /flushdns, ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew. Switch DNS: Control Panel → Network → adapter → Properties → IPv4 → Use the following DNS → 1.1.1.1 / 1.0.0.1. |
| macOS | Terminal → sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder. Switch DNS: System Settings → Network → interface → Details → DNS → 1.1.1.1, 1.0.0.1. |
| iOS | No system-wide DNS flush; toggle Airplane mode to flush, or install the “1.1.1.1” app for custom DNS. |
| Android | Private DNS: Settings → Network & internet → Private DNS → Private DNS provider hostname → one.one.one.one (Cloudflare) or dns.google. |
Fix 3 — system clock (HRESULT 0x80072efd specifically)
0x80072efd is a Windows WinInet “cannot establish secure connection” — the server’s TLS certificate failed validation, usually because the system clock is off. Sync:
- Windows: Settings → Time & language → Sync now.
- Also check Windows → Services → ensure “Windows Time (W32Time)” is Automatic and Running.
See browser login issues for the macOS / iOS / Android equivalents.
Fix 4 — firewall / AV test
Temporarily disable firewall + AV → test Roblox → if Roblox works, re-enable with Roblox allowed. Per-OS and per-AV allow-list paths are in firewall and router issues.
Fix 5 — reinstall (last resort)
Full clean sequence in reinstall guide. Short version:
- Close all Roblox processes.
- Uninstall Roblox.
- Delete
%LocalAppData%Roblox. - Clear browser cache (Ctrl+Shift+Delete).
- Restart PC.
- Download fresh from roblox.com/download → run as administrator.

If none of the above helped
- Switch from Wi-Fi to wired Ethernet — removes 2.4 GHz interference and packet loss.
- Check
tracert roblox.comoutput for a high-latency / dropped hop; if one appears, it’s an ISP routing problem, file with your ISP. - Try the Roblox desktop app if you were using browser (and vice versa) — different auth and network stacks.
- Submit a ticket at roblox.com/support with OS, network type, ping + speedtest results, exact error, and which fix step you got stuck at.
FAQ
What causes Roblox connection problems?
Roblox lists three main causes: network connectivity (slow internet, high latency, packet loss), firewall/AV blocking Roblox, and system clock out of sync (breaks SSL). Fix in that order.
What does HRESULT 0x80072efd mean?
Windows WinInet “cannot establish secure connection” — the TLS certificate failed validation, almost always because the system clock is off by more than a few minutes. Sync the clock to fix.
How do I flush DNS?
Windows: CMD as admin → ipconfig /flushdns. macOS: sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder. iOS: toggle Airplane mode. Android: set Private DNS to one.one.one.one.
Should I try the desktop app or stick with browser?
Try the other one. Browser and desktop app have different auth and networking paths. If one keeps failing, the other often works around the specific block.
Why does Build mode work but Play doesn’t?
Only the real-time Play-mode connection uses websockets to Roblox game servers. Build/Edit uses a different channel. Firewall rules that allow HTTPS but block websockets will break Play specifically.
Is Wi-Fi vs Ethernet a real difference?
For Roblox, yes. 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi in a crowded apartment building often has 1-5% packet loss, which Roblox sees as random disconnects. Wired Ethernet eliminates that.
When do I give up and contact support?
After you’ve tried Fixes 1-5 and the error code doesn’t match a specific page. Attach OS, network type, ping + speedtest, error text, which fix step failed. Response time: 1-3 business days.
