Verified November 7, 2026 · Status: live troubleshooting

Roblox desktop issues — “cannot find Roblox”, endless install loops, crashes on connect — almost always trace to a stale Roblox process still running during install, corrupted AppData or temp files, or a firewall blocking the launcher, with specific fixes split per Windows version and per browser integration. Verified on 7 November 2026.

Symptom → cause → first action

Symptom Likely cause First action
“Cannot find Roblox” Browser missing protocol handler Reinstall via Chrome/Edge (handler re-registers)
Endless install loop Previous installer process still running Task Manager → end all Roblox* processes, then install
Crashes immediately on open Corrupted %LocalAppData%Roblox Delete that folder + reinstall
Crashes when joining experience Firewall or AV blocking the launcher Allow Roblox in firewall + AV
Studio starts, Player doesn’t Player-specific permission or signed executable mismatch Fresh Player install as Administrator
“The joinscriptUrl was not provided” Stale browser session / outdated launcher Clear roblox.com cookies + reinstall launcher

Fix 1 — close every Roblox process first

  1. Ctrl+Shift+Esc → Task Manager → Details tab.
  2. End task on every process whose name starts with Roblox: RobloxPlayerBeta.exe, RobloxPlayerLauncher.exe, RobloxStudioLauncherBeta.exe, RobloxCrashHandler.exe.
  3. Close every browser tab showing roblox.com.
  4. Then retry install or launch.

Fix 2 — clear corrupted files per Windows version

Windows Paths to clear
Windows 10 / 11 Win+R → %LocalAppData%Roblox → delete folder. Then Win+R → %TEMP% → sort by name → delete anything starting with Roblox.
Windows 8.1 Same AppData path works. Legacy installs may also leave files in %ProgramData%Roblox — remove too.
Windows 7 (unsupported) Roblox dropped support; upgrade required.

Fix 3 — reinstall per browser

Browser Reinstall flow
Chrome Visit any experience → Play → browser prompts for the launcher → run the .exe. If it doesn’t prompt, go to roblox.com/download for the standalone installer.
Edge Same as Chrome — the Edge integration uses the same handler.
Firefox roblox.com/download → run installer as admin. Firefox doesn’t have the Chrome/Edge in-page handler.
Safari (macOS) roblox.com/download → the .dmg flow; drag to Applications.

Fix 4 — run installer as Administrator

Right-click the Roblox installer → Run as administrator. This resolves silent permission failures when writing to Program Files or AppData. Standard-user installs sometimes fail on OneDrive-synced Documents folders.

Fix 5 — firewall + AV check

See the full per-OS and per-AV allow-list steps in Roblox firewall and router issues. The short version: temporarily disable firewall + AV → test Roblox → re-enable with Roblox allowed.

Checking Studio-specific problems

Roblox Studio has its own separate install and Settings. If Player works but Studio doesn’t:

  • Create your experience at create.roblox.com → Studio integration opens there.
  • Studio installer is separate; re-download it from Create Hub.
  • Studio Settings → Resets → “Reset all settings” is safer than deleting the whole Studio install.

If none of the above helped

  • Full clean install sequence: close all Roblox processes → uninstall via Settings → delete %LocalAppData%Roblox → clear browser cache (Ctrl+Shift+Delete) → clear %TEMP% → restart PC → download installer from roblox.com → run as Administrator. See reinstall guide for the ordered checklist.
  • Still crashes → check hardware minimums at computer requirements.
  • Specific error code? Look it up in error codes.
  • Submit a ticket at roblox.com/support with: Windows version, GPU, exact error text, dxdiag.txt output if you can attach it, which fixes above you tried.

FAQ

Why does Roblox keep asking me to install it after I installed it?

Browser’s protocol handler lost its registration. Re-run the installer (right-click → Run as administrator). Chrome and Edge re-register the handler; other browsers need a standalone installer from roblox.com/download.

How do I close every Roblox process?

Ctrl+Shift+Esc → Details → sort by name → End task on every Roblox* process (Player, Studio, Launcher, CrashHandler). Also close roblox.com tabs. Then retry.

Where does Roblox install files on Windows?

Per-user at %LocalAppData%Roblox. Admin installs may also use %ProgramData%Roblox. Older installs leave remnants in %TEMP%; clear both when cleaning.

Do I need to run the installer as administrator?

Not always, but recommended for a clean install. Right-click installer → Run as administrator. Standard-user installs sometimes fail silently on OneDrive-synced folders.

Studio works but Player doesn’t — why?

Studio and Player have separate installs. Reinstall the Player via roblox.com/download. Also check that your AV isn’t allowing Studio but blocking Player (both executables need to be whitelisted).

Does Roblox still support Windows 7?

No. Roblox dropped Windows 7 support. You need Windows 8.1, 10, or 11. See computer requirements for the official OS list.

What do I attach to a Roblox Support ticket?

Windows version (winver), GPU model, exact error text or screenshot, the Fix step number from this page you got stuck on. If you can run dxdiag and attach dxdiag.txt, it saves Support a round-trip.
