Roblox Reinstall Guide: Windows, Chrome, Edge, Mac

Verified November 7, 2026 · Status: live troubleshooting
Reinstalling Roblox fixes most “won’t launch”, “install loop”, and “crashes on start” problems — restart first, then try a reinstall-over-existing (keeps your settings), and only do a full uninstall if that fails, with per-OS and per-browser steps that differ enough to matter. Symptom → fix path
| Symptom | Try first | If that fails |
|---|---|---|
| Won’t launch after Windows update | Restart PC | Reinstall-over-existing |
| Install loop (reinstall each click) | End all Roblox processes | Full uninstall + AppData wipe |
| Crashes immediately | Clear %LocalAppData%Roblox |
Full uninstall + reinstall as admin |
| Studio works, Player doesn’t | Reinstall Player only | Uninstall both, reinstall both |
| Stuck on “Configuring Roblox” | Run installer as administrator | Delete Program Files remnants + retry |
| Mac bouncing in Dock, won’t open | Delete ~/Library/Containers/com.Roblox.RobloxPlayer |
Trash app → empty Trash → reinstall |
Step 0 — restart first (seriously)
Many “need to reinstall” cases resolve with a plain restart:
- Clears locked files that block install.
- Resets network stack and firewall rules.
- Releases memory held by zombie Roblox processes.
Only move to reinstall if restart doesn’t help.
Reinstall-over-existing (keeps your settings)
Roblox’s primary method: run the installer on top of the existing install; broken files get overwritten, settings persist.
| Browser / OS | Steps |
|---|---|
| Chrome (Windows/Mac) | Visit any experience → click Play → browser prompts for installer → run. |
| Edge (Windows) | Same as Chrome — shares the installer flow. |
| Firefox / Opera / Brave | roblox.com/download → run the standalone installer. |
| Safari (macOS) | roblox.com/download → download the .dmg → drag Roblox to Applications → replace existing. |
Full clean uninstall (when reinstall-over-existing fails)
Windows 10 / 11
- Settings → Apps → Apps & features → search Roblox → Uninstall. Repeat for Roblox Studio if listed.
- End tasks: Task Manager → end every Roblox* process.
- Delete
%LocalAppData%Roblox. - Delete any
Roblox*files in%TEMP%. - Also check
%ProgramData%Roblox(admin installs only). - Clear browser cache: Ctrl+Shift+Delete → cached files + cookies for roblox.com.
- Restart PC.
- Download fresh installer: roblox.com/download.
- Right-click installer → Run as administrator.
macOS
- Quit Roblox (Cmd+Q).
- Applications → drag Roblox to Trash → Empty Trash.
- Finder → Cmd+Shift+G →
~/Library/Containers/com.Roblox.RobloxPlayer→ delete the folder. - Finder → Cmd+Shift+G →
~/Library/Caches→ delete anycom.Roblox.*entries. - Download fresh from roblox.com/download → open .dmg → drag Roblox to Applications.
- Open Roblox → sign in.
ChromeOS
Roblox on Chromebook is the Android app from Play Store:
- Launcher → right-click Roblox icon → Remove from Chrome.
- Reboot Chromebook (full power cycle, not just sign out).
- Play Store → search Roblox → Install.

Preserving your settings (if you don’t want to lose them)
Reinstall-over-existing preserves user settings by default. A full uninstall + AppData wipe removes them. If you want to preserve:
- Back up
%LocalAppData%RobloxGlobalSettings_13.xml(keybindings, sensitivity). - Back up
%LocalAppData%PackagesROBLOX*if you installed from Microsoft Store.
Restore after reinstall by copying back to the same path.
If none of the above helped
- Hardware may not meet minimums — see computer requirements.
- Specific error message? Look it up in error codes.
- Network layer rather than install? See general connection problems.
- Firewall / AV blocking? See firewall and router issues.
- Submit a ticket: username, OS version, GPU model, exact error at install or launch, which steps above you’ve tried.
FAQ
Do I need to uninstall Roblox before reinstalling?
Usually no. Roblox’s rule: “Most of the time, you don’t need to uninstall the program before reinstalling it.” The reinstall-over-existing method overwrites broken files while keeping settings. Only uninstall fully if that doesn’t work.
Should I restart before reinstalling?
Yes. Many “need reinstall” cases resolve with a plain restart because locked files release and zombie processes clear. Try restart first, every time.
What’s the difference between Chrome/Edge reinstall and other browsers?
Chrome and Edge have a specific integration: clicking Play on roblox.com triggers the installer prompt. Firefox, Safari, Opera, Brave don’t — you go to roblox.com/download for the standalone installer.
How do I reinstall on Mac?
Trash the app → empty Trash → delete ~/Library/Containers/com.Roblox.RobloxPlayer → download fresh from roblox.com/download → drag to Applications.
Do I need administrator rights to reinstall?
Not always, but recommended for a full clean install. Right-click installer → Run as administrator. Standard-user installs sometimes fail silently on OneDrive-synced folders or when a prior admin install left remnants in Program Files.
Can I preserve my keybindings and sensitivity?
Yes. Back up %LocalAppData%RobloxGlobalSettings_13.xml before uninstalling, restore after reinstall. Reinstall-over-existing keeps the file by default.
My Chromebook is different — what do I do?
On ChromeOS you remove and reinstall from the Play Store, not from roblox.com. Full steps in Chromebook troubleshooting.
