Roblox Error 280: Out-of-Date Version Fix per Platform

Updated November 6, 2026
Roblox Error Code 280 is a version mismatch, not a server or network fault. Roblox describes it in one line: “Roblox Error Code 280 occurs when there is an issue with the Roblox version running on your PC, Mac, or mobile device.” The remedy is to force the client to a fresh install so it downloads the current build. Platform-by-platform steps below are quoted verbatim from Roblox Support.

Why 280 happens and how to read it
Roblox pushes updates to all clients regularly. When a new version ships, the server rejects older clients and the player sees 280. The three common reasons the client failed to update on its own:
- The launcher’s self-updater did not complete, often because the app was closed during a background update.
- The device’s app store is disabled or cached a stale version of Roblox.
- A corrupted install in AppData (Windows) or the application bundle (macOS) is preventing a clean update on restart.
Roblox’s recommended fix is the same across platforms: uninstall, clear residual app data, and reinstall from the current store. Roblox’s phrase on the uninstall step: “This helps clear any corrupted files and data that may affect the functionality of the Roblox application, installing a new copy of the application updates it to the latest version.”
Windows 7, 8.1, and 10 fix
Roblox’s own three-step sequence:
- Uninstall: Start → Settings → Apps & features → select Roblox → Uninstall.
- Clear app data: Open the command prompt via Win+R →
CMD→ Enter. Typecd AppDataLocal, press Enter. Typermdir /s Roblox, press Enter. Confirm withy. - Restart and reinstall: Reboot the computer, then install Roblox from roblox.com or the Microsoft Store.
Roblox’s note on why the AppData wipe is necessary: “This gets the access cache build-up cleared from your system, i.e., clearing the app’s data restores the app to its default settings and clears all stored app data.” Skipping this step is the single most common reason 280 returns right after a reinstall.
Windows 11 fix
On Windows 11, the uninstall path is through Control Panel:
- Search Control Panel from the taskbar and open it.
- Select Programs → Programs and Features.
- Right-click Roblox → Uninstall or Uninstall/Change.
After uninstall, run the same AppDataLocal wipe with cd AppDataLocal and rmdir /s Roblox, restart, and reinstall. Microsoft Store installs tend to self-update correctly; if Roblox was installed from roblox.com, the direct download from roblox.com is the cleanest reinstall path.
macOS fix (10.13 High Sierra and above)
Mac uninstall has three valid paths, per Roblox’s article: “Either you can drag the Roblox app to the Trash, or Select the Roblox app > Move to Trash from the menu bar (If the app is available there), or Select the Roblox app and press Command-Delete on your keyboard to delete it.”
After uninstall, open System Settings → Privacy & Security and grant Roblox permission again when the reinstalled binary asks: “Select the Apple icon to open Preferences → Open Privacy & Security settings, then turning on permission for the Roblox app.” A denied permission at reinstall time surfaces as 280 again, because the client cannot complete its update handshake without system permission.
iOS fix (iOS 12 and above)
iOS makes 280 easier than desktop because the App Store handles the update:
- Force-close Roblox. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and swipe the Roblox card up.
- Reboot the device. Hold the volume and side buttons until the power-off slider appears; slide, wait 30 seconds, hold the side button to power back on.
- Delete and reinstall. Hold the Roblox icon until the apps shake, tap the X or Remove App, then search the App Store for Roblox and reinstall. The installed build is always the current one.
- Check date and time. Roblox’s exact instruction: “Make sure the date and time are accurate. If they are not, update them and try Roblox again.”
Android fix (Android 6 and above)
Android follows the same sequence with Google Play as the install source:
- Power down the device, wait 30 seconds, power on.
- Open Recent apps and swipe the Roblox card to force-close.
- Settings → Application manager → Roblox Mobile App → Uninstall.
- Reinstall from the Google Play Store.
- Verify Settings → Date and time is accurate and auto-sync is enabled.
Roblox’s own phrase for the date and time step: “Helps keep the system in sync with the servers.” A clock drift of minutes blocks the update handshake and 280 returns.
Fire OS and Chrome OS fix
Amazon Fire devices (Fire 7 9th Gen and above, Fire HD 8 8th Gen+, Fire HD 10 9th Gen+, Fire Max 11 13th Gen+) use the Amazon Appstore. Force-stop through Settings → Apps & Games → Manage All Applications → Roblox → Force Stop. Uninstall, reboot, reinstall from the Amazon Appstore.
Chrome OS 53 and above needs one extra step: update the OS before reinstalling Roblox. Roblox’s wording: “Update the chrome OS (Helps run the application with maximum optimization).” Then force-close via Task Manager, reboot, and reinstall from Google Play. A stale Chrome OS build is a common 280 cause on Chromebooks that have gone months without a reboot.
What to try when nothing works
If 280 persists after a clean reinstall on every platform in the device, the remaining causes are usually:
- A stale app store cache. Clear the Microsoft Store cache on Windows (Win+R →
wsreset.exe). Clear Google Play cache under Settings → Apps → Google Play Store → Storage → Clear Cache. - A VPN or regional proxy. Some regional proxies cache older Roblox installer binaries. Disconnect the VPN and try the install again.
- Family or parental controls. On Windows and mobile, parental-control settings can block Roblox updates. Review the family settings dashboard for the device.
- Insufficient disk space. The Roblox installer needs several hundred megabytes of free space to complete. On low-storage devices, free space before retrying.
If 280 still appears, Roblox Support needs the same information as every other error: Roblox Username, Model Name Of Your Device, OS Version, exact error text, and the steps that trigger the issue.
How to tell a 280 from a general update failure
Both situations show a Roblox launcher that refuses to load, but they differ in how the error surfaces. 280 arrives with the exact wording “Your version of Roblox may be out of date. Please update Roblox and try again.” If the launcher shows a generic “An error occurred” message without the 280 code, the fix is different: that is usually a missing installer dependency on Windows (Visual C++ Redistributable) or a blocked .NET install.
The quick triage: read the error text carefully. If the number 280 is in the message, the version-mismatch fix below is the right one. If a different number is shown, the Roblox error codes table maps every active code to the right fix.
FAQ
What does Roblox Error 280 mean?
Roblox’s own definition: “Roblox Error Code 280 occurs when there is an issue with the Roblox version running on your PC, Mac, or mobile device.” In practical terms, the client version is too old for the current server protocol and the client failed to self-update.
Is Error 280 a server-side outage?
No. 280 is a client-version mismatch and is fixed on the player’s device. If Roblox services are genuinely down, the error surface is on status.roblox.com and typically shows Error 503 or a loading screen that never resolves.
Why does the Roblox launcher fail to auto-update sometimes?
The most common reasons are a background launcher that was closed mid-update, a corrupted AppData cache on Windows, a permission denial on macOS, or a cached app-store build on mobile. A clean reinstall covers all four root causes in one pass.
Do I lose my Robux or progress by reinstalling?
No. Robux, inventory, friends, and game progress live on the Roblox servers and are tied to the account, not the local install. A reinstall affects only the client binary and cache on the device.
What is the AppDataLocal wipe on Windows for?
Roblox’s own description: “This gets the access cache build-up cleared from your system, i.e., clearing the app’s data restores the app to its default settings and clears all stored app data.” Without the wipe, a reinstall may pick up corrupted files from the prior install and 280 can return within minutes.
Why is the Chrome OS update step on the fix list?
A Chromebook that has not been updated in weeks or months often has a Chrome Play Store that cannot read the current Roblox update manifest. Updating Chrome OS first clears that mismatch. Roblox’s framing is practical: it “helps run the application with maximum optimization.”
Can I avoid 280 on mobile long-term?
Yes. On both iOS and Android, enable automatic app updates so Roblox always pulls the current build. On iOS, Settings → App Store → App Updates: On. On Android, Google Play Store → Settings → Network preferences → Auto-update apps.
