Roblox Error 277: Lost Connection Fix per Platform

Updated November 6, 2026
Roblox Error Code 277 is a client-side network failure, not an account or ban issue. Roblox’s own support article defines it as: “Error code 277 occurs when the client application servers fail to establish a network connection on PCs, Macs, or mobile devices.” The fix is the same family of steps on every platform — reinstall the client, clear app data, check the connection — with small per-OS differences that the article below walks through verbatim from Roblox’s own instructions.

Source: Roblox Support — Error Code 277: Lost connection to the game server, please reconnect. Verified on 6 November 2026. The quotes below are from Roblox’s own support page.
What Roblox says Error 277 means
Roblox describes the error in a single line on their support page: “Error code 277 occurs when the client application servers fail to establish a network connection on PCs, Macs, or mobile devices.” The practical read: the Roblox client cannot complete the handshake with the game server. The cause is almost always on the player’s side — network, firewall, corrupted install, or an out-of-sync clock — not on Roblox’s infrastructure.
Roblox organises the fix by operating system. The same three families of steps repeat for every platform: reinstall the app, clear app data, and check the network. Platform-specific notes appear in each section below.
Windows 7, 8.1, and 10 fix
From Roblox’s support page, the three-step fix for older Windows:
- Reinstall: “Select Start and open Settings → Look for the Apps icon and select it, followed by Apps & features → Select the Roblox application and then select Uninstall, then follow the directions on the screen.” A fresh install clears corrupted files and pulls the latest version.
- Clear app data: Press Win+R, type
CMD, press Enter. In the command prompt, run:cd AppDataLocalthenrmdir /s Roblox. Confirm withy. Restart and reinstall. - Network-related: Try a different source of internet connection. If 277 persists, Roblox’s exact words are: “it is recommended to connect with your internet connection provider for further troubleshooting.”
Windows 11 fix
Roblox lists the same three steps for Windows 11, with the uninstall path through Control Panel rather than Settings: “In the search text field on the taskbar, enter the Control Panel and select it from the results → Select Programs and open it, followed by Programs and Features → Press and hold (or right-click) on the Roblox application to remove and select Uninstall or Uninstall/Change, then follow the directions on the screen.”
After uninstall, the AppDataLocal wipe is identical to Windows 10. Reboot, reinstall from the Microsoft Store or Roblox website, and try the game.
macOS fix (High Sierra and above)
On Mac, Roblox breaks the fix into three steps:
- Uninstall: “Either you can drag the Roblox app to the Trash, or Select the Roblox app > Move to Trash from the menu bar (If the app is available there), or Select the Roblox app and press Command-Delete on your keyboard to delete it.”
- Check macOS permissions: “Select the Apple icon to open Preferences → Open Privacy & Security settings, then turning on permission for the Roblox app.” macOS blocks apps without this permission, which produces the same 277 symptom as a true network failure.
- Try a different network. Wired beats wireless for diagnosing this. If the error persists, contact the connection provider.
iOS fix (iOS 12 and above)
Roblox’s iOS checklist has five items, in order. Three deserve the most attention: a reboot, a force-close, and a reinstall.
- Reboot: Hold the volume button and side button together until the power-off slider appears, slide to turn off, wait 30 seconds, then hold the side button to power back on.
- Force-close: Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and swipe the Roblox card up to kill the process.
- Reinstall: Hold the Roblox app icon until the icons shake, tap the X (or Remove App), reinstall from the App Store.
- Date and time check: Roblox’s words are literal: “Make sure the date and time are accurate. If they are not, update them and try Roblox again.” A clock drift of minutes alone can trigger 277 by breaking TLS handshakes.
- Change networks: Switch from Wi-Fi to cellular (or vice versa) to isolate whether the issue is the local network.
Android fix (Android 6 and above)
The Android steps are nearly identical to iOS. Reboot by holding the power button and tapping Power Off, wait 30 seconds, power on. Force-close through the Recent apps page by swiping the Roblox card. Reinstall: Settings → Application manager → Roblox Mobile App → Uninstall → reinstall from Google Play Store. Check date and time. Try a different network.
The clock check matters on Android more than most players expect — if the device auto-time is off, every Roblox session will fail at connect.
Amazon Fire OS and Chrome OS fixes
Fire 7 (9th Gen and above), Fire HD 8, HD 10, and Fire Max 11 follow Android’s playbook with the Amazon App Store instead of Google Play. Force-stop via Settings → Apps & Games → Manage All Applications → Roblox → Force Stop. Reinstall via the Amazon Appstore.
Chrome OS 53 and above uses Google Play as well. Roblox’s one extra note on Chromebooks is to update the OS before starting the fix: “Update the chrome OS (Helps run the application with maximum optimization).” After OS update, force-close via Task Manager (three-line menu → More Tools → Task Manager), reboot the Chromebook, and reinstall from Google Play.
Firewall and router — why most 277 errors happen
Roblox’s companion article on General Connection Problems points at the single most common root cause: “This is very frequently a firewall problem, though it can be (in very few cases) the result of a low-bandwidth connection or an inconsistent wireless connection.”
The port range Roblox needs open is explicit: “The port range is currently UDP 49152 – 65535, so keeping all these ports open should allow Roblox to connect to your router properly.” If a reinstall and app-data wipe don’t fix 277, open these UDP ports in the router, disable third-party firewalls temporarily, and remove ad-blocker browser extensions if Roblox is run through the web player.
For school-managed networks, Roblox has a separate help article for administrators to review on allowing access — the general-connection page points to it directly.
FAQ
What causes Roblox Error 277 exactly?
Roblox’s definition is clear: the client fails to establish a network connection with the game server. In practice, that breaks down to three root causes — a firewall or router blocking UDP ports 49152–65535, a corrupted Roblox install, or a clock out-of-sync by more than a few minutes.
Is Error 277 a ban?
No. Bans produce Error Code 267 (“you have been kicked due to unexpected client behavior”) or Error Code 600 (“banned from an experience”), which Roblox lists as separate entries on the Roblox Error Codes index. 277 is a connection failure, and the two never overlap in player-facing wording.
Why does uninstalling and reinstalling Roblox fix it?
Roblox’s own explanation: “This helps clear any corrupted files and data that may affect the functionality of the Roblox application; installing a new copy of the application updates it to the latest version.” If the client cache or an older binary is the problem, a full reinstall resets both.
What does “Clear App-Data” actually do on Windows?
Roblox describes it as: “This gets the access cache build-up cleared from your system, i.e., clearing the app’s data restores the app to its default settings and clears all stored app data.” The AppDataLocalRoblox folder stores session caches that can corrupt on a bad network drop.
Which UDP ports does Roblox need open?
UDP 49152 through 65535. This is a wide ephemeral-port range that most home routers already pass by default, but corporate or school firewalls often restrict it — which is why Roblox fails on managed networks that work for other games.
Why does date and time matter for Error 277?
Roblox’s TLS handshake rejects certificates that look like they’re from the future or far past. A clock off by minutes can cause the connection to fail silently and surface as 277. Enabling “set time automatically” on the device almost always resolves this subclass of 277.
Still getting 277 after every step — what then?
Roblox’s own last-resort line is to contact their customer support with: “Roblox Username, Any Error Messages Received, Model Name Of Your Device, OS Version, Steps To Encounter The Issue.” That is the minimum set of information Roblox needs to escalate.
Related error codes
If 277 doesn’t match your symptoms, the error you saw may be one of its neighbours on Roblox’s error-codes index, where Roblox groups the entire family of connection and account errors:
- Error 266 — “Your connection timed out. Check your internet connection and try again.” Different symptom (timeout), same family of fixes.
- Error 268 — “You have been kicked due to unexpected client behavior.” This is closer to a ban-adjacent kick than a connection failure.
- Error 279 (ID 17) — “Failed to connect to the game.” Often firewall-related, covered in detail on our Error 279 page.
- Error 280 — “Your version of Roblox may be out of date.” Covered on Error 280 page; usually fixed by letting the launcher update.
- Error 524 — “You do not have permission to join this game.” Covered on Error 524 page; the fix is on the experience owner’s side.
