First time I saw Trick or Treat Ekko load into my game, I thought someone was running a custom skin. The candy-themed bat and the little jack-o-lantern details caught me off guard completely. Been playing Ekko on and off since season 6, mostly as a mid pocket pick when my main gets banned, and this skin just has that goofy energy that makes you want to spam it. Not gonna lie, I queued up like 15 games in a row with it the week it dropped back in October 2018.
What Trick or Treat Ekko actually brings
So the big thing here is the costume itself. Ekko is rocking this vampire outfit with a cape and fangs, carrying around a bat that looks like it belongs in a haunted house gift shop. The whole aesthetic leans into the Halloween vibe without being too over the top. Could be wrong here but I think this is one of the better Halloween skins Riot has put out, at least for the Epic tier.
VFX got the full treatment. His Q throws out this ghostly projectile with orange and purple trails. Looks clean in lane, easy to track. The W zone has these little bat particles swirling around it, and when it pops theres this satisfying burst of Halloween energy. Trapped a Syndra in it last week during a Diamond promo game around midnight and the stun visual just looked crisp against the river.
E dash has subtle orange particle trails. Nothing crazy but it reads well. The R is where the skin really shows off though. Ekko’s ult rewind leaves behind this ghostly trail with pumpkin-colored afterimages. In a chaotic teamfight its actually easier to track than some of his other skins. The recall animation is the highlight for me. He does this whole trick-or-treat bit with a cauldron. Cute stuff.
Voice lines stay base, no new VO. Standard for a 1350 RP Epic skin. Honestly its fine for what it is because Antony Del Rio’s base performance already carries Ekko hard enough. (Random aside: my buddy who one-tricks Ekko jungle has this skin permanently locked in every October and refuses to swap until November.)
The Trick-or-Treat line and release context
Trick or Treat Ekko dropped October 24, 2018. Right before Halloween, obviously. Xu ‘Crow God’ Cheng nailed the splash, the composition with Ekko mid-swing surrounded by candy and bats is genuinely one of the better seasonal splash pieces in the game.
The Trick-or-Treat skinline is one of Riot’s recurring Halloween themes. Ekko fits naturally into it. The playful energy of his character matches the whole costume party vibe way better than champions who take themselves too seriously. Kinda feels like this skin was designed specifically for Ekko’s personality rather than just slapping a Halloween outfit on him.
6 chromas total if you want variety. Obsidian is my pick, turns the whole outfit dark and moody which contrasts with the goofy theme in a way that actually works. Amethyst leans into the purple witch aesthetic harder than base. Golden is flashy but I think it loses some of the Halloween charm. The rest are fine but those three stand out. Legacy vault skin though, so you cant just grab it whenever. Gotta wait for the vault to open or get lucky with Hextech crafting.
How it plays in actual games
Been running this in Diamond mid lane and jungle both. The particles dont mess with your ability tracking at all, which matters when you’re trying to land W predictions in a fast comp. Some Ekko skins have Q particles that blend into certain map areas but Trick or Treat Ekko reads clean on Summoner’s Rift. Season 9 I think, I had a stretch where I played maybe 40 ranked games with this skin and never once lost a trade because I couldnt see my own abilities.
Real talk though, the auto attack animation feels slightly different from base. Might be placebo but the bat swing has a weight to it that base Ekko’s sword doesnt have. A few Ekko mains in my games have said the same thing. Not sure if it’s just me but the E proc specifically feels snappier on this skin.
Should you pick up Trick or Treat Ekko?
Verdict time. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. New VFX, solid recall, great splash, and a theme that actually fits the champion. The problem is availability. Sits in the Legacy pool so you’re at Riot’s mercy for when you can actually buy it. If you see it in the shop during Harrowing or in Your Shop, lock it in.
For Ekko mains specifically, this competes with PROJECT and Pulsefire for the best Epic-tier option. I’d rank it above Sandstorm and Academy without question. Below PROJECT if you want the sci-fi fantasy, but above it if you want personality. The Trick-or-Treat skin just has more character to it.
Skip this if you already own Star Guardian Ekko and only keep one skin per champ. But if you’re the type who rotates skins by season, this is the obvious October through November pick. Worth 1350 RP if you main Ekko, especially with that Obsidian chroma equipped.
