Sugar Rush Zilean

First time I saw Sugar Rush Zilean load in, I thought someone was trolling me in champ select. A candy-themed time mage. Sounds ridiculous on paper. But then the VFX hit and honestly not gonna lie, it works way better than it should. Been running this in Diamond for two seasons now and the skin just has this goofy charm that never gets old, even at 2 AM when you’re losing LP.

What the skin actually changes

So Zilean gets the full candy makeover here. His clock becomes this massive peppermint disc, his robes turn into what looks like a gingerbread wizard outfit, and theres candy canes and frosting details everywhere. The model alone is a solid upgrade from base Zilean, who lets be real looks like he wandered out of a 2009 loading screen.

The VFX are where Sugar Rush Zilean earns the 1350 RP. His Q bombs become these wrapped candy projectiles that leave sugar particle trails on the ground. Satisfying to land. The double bomb stun pops with this burst of confetti and sprinkles that reads cleanly in teamfights without being distracting. I think the W reset animation got a candy sparkle effect too, subtle but noticeable if you’re spamming abilities in lane.

E speed up/slow has these swirling candy particle trails on the target. Clean visual feedback for your ADC to know they got the speed boost. His R chronoshift wraps the target in this candy shell cocoon effect. Looks great. The recall animation has Zilean pulling candy from his clock like some kind of time-traveling trick-or-treater. No new voice lines though, voice stays default. Standard for an Epic tier skin.

Not sure if it’s just me but the auto attack animation feels slightly smoother with this skin. Probably placebo. Either way I’ve been hitting more cs with it. (Random aside: my duo partner refuses to play with me when I lock in this skin because he says the candy particles give him a headache.)

The Sugar Rush line and release context

Sugar Rush Zilean dropped December 17, 2019. Late season 9 holiday batch. Horace ‘Hozure’ Hsu nailed the splash, capturing this manic energy of Zilean surrounded by candy and sweets with that wild grin. The Sugar Rush skinline is one of those seasonal themes Riot does where they just commit to the bit. Zilean fits the line surprisingly well because the clock-as-peppermint concept is clever enough to not feel forced.

7 chromas total. Meteorite is my go-to, the dark chocolate brown reads clean against the Rift and feels less visually noisy than base. Sweet Tooth is the unique one with that pink-to-teal gradient, kinda reminds me of cotton candy at a fair. Rose Quartz leans into the pastel pink if thats your vibe. Rest are fine but nothing I’d pick over those three.

The Sugar Rush line also got Braum, Evelynn, and Ziggs in the same batch. Zilean is arguably the best executed of the set. Could be wrong here but I feel like Riot put extra effort into making his abilities readable because Zilean’s kit is already visually underwhelming at base.

Is Sugar Rush Zilean worth 1350 RP?

Real verdict: if you play Zilean support in ranked, this is a strong pickup. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. New VFX on every ability, solid model overhaul, good recall. You’re not getting new VO or anything Legendary-tier but for an Epic skin on a champion who has maybe four skins worth considering, Sugar Rush sits comfortably near the top.

Played maybe 200 games with this skin across season 10 and 11. The candy VFX never got old, the chromas give you variety, and it just makes Zilean feel less ancient. Shop has it permanently so no rush. Skip it if you already own Blood Moon Zilean and prefer the darker aesthetic, but for everyone else maining the time wizard in solo queue, this is the one. S-tier Zilean cosmetic. That last ranked game on a Friday night where my Kayn inted three times in a row, at least my Sugar Rush bombs looked good landing on the enemy backline.
