Zilean Skins

Zilean is one of those champions where the skin catalog tells you exactly how Riot feels about him. Eight skins across thirteen years. No Legendary. No Prestige. No Ultimate. Just a handful of Standards and three Epics that range from "that's actually pretty good" to "why does this exist." Been playing Zilean on and off since season 4, mostly as a support in Diamond, and I've owned every single one of these skins at some point. The collection is small but there's a couple genuine standouts hiding in here if you know where to look.

Zilean's Skin Collection: 13 Years of Neglect

Eight skins. Thats it. From 2009 to 2022, Riot gave the Time Keeper eight cosmetics total. Five of those are Standard tier at 520 RP or less, which basically means texture swaps with zero new particles. The remaining three are Epics at 1350 RP, and those only started showing up in 2016 with Blood Moon Zilean. Before that it was just recolors and joke skins for a decade straight.

Not gonna lie, the early years were rough. Old Saint Zilean dropped in 2009. Groovy Zilean, same year. Shurima Desert Zilean came along eventually. Time Machine Zilean. All Standard tier, all just "what if Zilean but wearing a different outfit." No new VFX, no new animations, no new voice lines. You're paying 520 RP for a hat change.

The timeline looks like this: four skins between 2009 and 2015, then Blood Moon in 2016, Sugar Rush in 2019, Winterblessed in 2022, and Arcana at some point. Three year gaps between Epics. Riot clearly doesnt have Zilean on any kind of regular skin schedule, which tracks because his play rate has been hovering around 1-2% for as long as I can remember. Low play rate means low skin priority. Simple math.

Could be wrong here but I think Zilean might have one of the worst skin-per-year ratios in the entire game. Thirteen years, eight skins. Compare that to Lux or Ezreal getting two or three a year and it starts to feel criminal. The champion deserves better. His kit is unique, his ult is one of the most impactful abilities on the Rift, and his visual design has so much potential for creative skinlines. But Riot keeps passing him over.

Real talk though, quality over quantity applies here. The three Epics are all genuinely solid. Not a single dud among them. That's more than some champions with 15+ skins can say.

Best Zilean Skins Worth Your RP

Sugar Rush Zilean. This is the one. Released in 2019 at 1350 RP and it completely transforms the champion. The clock on his back becomes this massive candy cane contraption, his Q bombs are gingerbread cookies, his W has frosting particles, and the E speed boost leaves a trail of candy. Even the ult resurrection has this whole candy explosion thing going on. Played maybe 80 games with this skin in ranked last season and the visual clarity is actually better than base in some ways. The bombs read cleaner against dark terrain.

Winterblessed Zilean is the newest one, 2022 release, also 1350 RP. Ice and frost theme across all abilities. The Q bombs become these frozen orbs that shatter on detonation, which looks clean in teamfights. W particles have a snowflake burst. Might be overthinking it but the E movement speed trail feels slightly more visible to teammates in this skin, which helps when you're peeling for your ADC and they need to actually see that they got buffed. (Random aside: my duo partner didnt even notice the E buff for three games straight until I switched to this skin. Coincidence maybe but still.)

Arcana Zilean rounds out the Epic trio. Tarot card aesthetic across the board. The Q bombs have this golden mystical look, the ult resurrection effect has card imagery. Fits the whole "ancient being who manipulates time" fantasy better than most of his catalog. Solid pick.

Blood Moon Zilean from 2016 deserves a mention too. First Epic he ever got. The demonic mask and red-black color scheme hit different on a support champion. Your bombs look menacing. Good skin, just slightly dated compared to the three I mentioned above. The VFX were impressive for 2016 but Riot's particle work has improved so much since then that Sugar Rush and Winterblessed just look crisper.

Old Saint Zilean gets an honorable mention purely for the comedy factor. Santa Zilean throwing present bombs in your ranked games during December. Worth the 520 RP for the seasonal meme alone. Been locking this in every December since season 6 and it never gets old watching the enemy team get bombed by Santa.

Skinlines and How Zilean Fits

Zilean shows up in eight different skinlines: Snowdown Showdown, Day Job, Chronicle, Mad Scientists, Blood Moon, Sugar Rush, Winterblessed, and Arcana. Mixed bag in terms of thematic fit.

Blood Moon works perfectly for him. Ancient being, mystical powers, time manipulation. The demonic aesthetic of Blood Moon maps onto his lore naturally. Same thing with Arcana. Tarot cards and fate and destiny. Thats Zilean's whole deal. These two skinlines feel like they were made for champions exactly like him.

Sugar Rush is the wild card. Candy themed Zilean sounds ridiculous on paper. But the execution is so good that it became his best skin. Sometimes the skinlines that shouldnt work end up being the most fun. Kinda feels like the art team had more creative freedom when they werent trying to make it "fit" thematically. They just went full candy and committed to it.

(Sidebar for Zilean mains specifically: the Chronicle skinline is just Time Machine Zilean. One skin. Riot created an entire skinline concept around time travel and put one champion in it. Classic Riot moment.)

Winterblessed is the most recent line he appeared in. Ice and winter themes. It works well enough. Not as natural a fit as Blood Moon or Arcana but the execution carries it. The Mad Scientists line is just Zilean in a lab coat basically. Day Job is Groovy Zilean being a hippie. These older skinlines were more "funny costume" than "alternate universe" which is just how League skins worked back in 2009.

Honestly I think Zilean would be a perfect fit for skinlines like Dark Star or Cosmic. An entity that manipulates time itself, set against the backdrop of dying stars and cosmic forces? Riot is leaving money on the table. Not that they care when Lux needs her 47th skin.

Budget vs Premium: Where to Spend on Zilean

Good news and bad news. Bad news: Zilean has no Legendary or higher tier skin. No new voice lines on any skin in his catalog. Every single one uses base VO. The ceiling is Epic at 1350 RP.

Good news: the Epics are all strong. Sugar Rush at 1350 RP is the best value pick, period. Full VFX overhaul, new animations, new recall. Everything you'd want from an Epic. If you're only buying one Zilean skin ever, thats the one.

On the budget side, 520 RP gets you Old Saint Zilean or Groovy Zilean. Neither has new particles or effects. Pure model swaps. But 520 RP is basically nothing and Old Saint Zilean has genuine personality. Not sure if it's just me but the Santa skin makes laning phase more fun. Something about throwing gift boxes at people in bot lane.

The price range is tight. 520 to 1350, thats it. No 1820+ option exists. If you main Zilean and want the premium experience, Sugar Rush or Winterblessed are your ceiling. Been daily driving Sugar Rush for two seasons now and honestly it holds up against most Legendaries I've seen on other champions. The particle work is that clean.

For the one-trick on a budget: grab Old Saint Zilean for 520 during Snowdown sales, use it in December, and save up for Sugar Rush the rest of the year. Two skins, under 2000 RP total, and you're covered for every mood. Fair price for the package.
