Time Machine Zilean

Been maining Zilean on and off since season 3 and Time Machine Zilean is one of those skins that just sticks with you. Not because its flashy or loaded with new effects. It sticks because the concept is so clean for an old 520 RP skin. Zilean already looks like a mad inventor type, and this skin leans hard into that steampunk lab rat aesthetic. First time I saw it in champ select around 2 AM on a weeknight I thought someone modded their client. Nope. Just a skin from 2011 doing more with less.

What Time Machine Zilean actually changes

Real talk though, at 520 RP you’re not getting a visual overhaul. Time Machine Zilean swaps out the base robes for this retro-futuristic outfit with goggles pushed up on his forehead and a massive clock contraption strapped to his back. The color palette shifts toward brass and copper tones. Darker leather. Feels like Zilean raided a Victorian workshop and came out wearing half of it.

No new VFX on Q or W. No VO refresh. Base voice lines, no changes. The bombs look the same, the ult looks the same. Standard stuff for this price tier and this era of skins. But the model swap alone does enough. The silhouette reads differently in lane. Played maybe 200 games with this thing back when I was climbing through Plat and the goggles alone make it feel distinct from base Zilean or Groovy Zilean.

Could be wrong here but I think the recall is also unchanged. No fancy animation, just the default channel. For a Standard skin from April 12, 2011 though, expecting anything beyond the model swap is unreasonable. Riot wasnt even doing custom recalls for most skins back then.

The Mad Scientists line and where this fits

Time Machine Zilean belongs to the Mad Scientists skinline. Same thematic family as Mad Scientist Ziggs and Mad Scientist Singed. The line doesn’t get much love from Riot these days. Hasn’t seen a new entry in years. But the concept works naturally for Zilean. Dude literally manipulates time. Strapping a time machine to his back is the most obvious skin idea possible and they executed it well for the era.

Released April 12, 2011. Deep into season 1. Most people reading this probably weren’t even playing League yet. No splash artist credited in the data, which tracks for skins from that period. Riot’s art pipeline was different back then. Smaller team, faster turnaround, less documentation.

This one sits in the Legacy vault now. Can’t just grab it from the shop whenever you want. Vault rotation skin, so you’re either waiting for a Legacy sale event or hoping to roll it from Hextech crafting. Honestly thats part of the appeal. Seen maybe 3 of these in my games all season. When you do spot one in loading screen it hits different because nobody runs it.

Should you grab Time Machine Zilean?

Verdict time. 520 RP feels fair for what you get. A solid model change on a champion who doesn’t have a massive skin catalog to begin with. Zilean mains know the struggle. You’ve got like eight skins total and half of them are from an era where “skin” meant “slightly different outfit.” Time Machine is one of the better ones from that old guard.

If you’re a Zilean one-trick looking to rotate through your collection, this deserves a slot. The Mad Scientists fantasy fits his kit better than something like Shurima Desert Zilean. (Random aside: my duo partner who plays nothing but enchanters calls this the “Doc Brown skin” and honestly I cant argue with that.) Not gonna compete with Arcana Zilean or the newer options on pure visual quality. But for a Legacy piece at this price point, for players who want something rare in the loading screen, it earns its spot. Skip it if you only play Zilean occasionally. Worth hunting through the vault if you main him.
