Snow Man Yi

First game I played with Snow Man Yi was around 2 AM on a Friday, right after the 2018 winter event dropped. Locked it in for a normal game, didnt even check the skin spotlight first. Master Yi dressed as a snowman with a carrot nose sword. Ridiculous concept. Absolutely love it.

What Snow Man Yi actually brings to the table

So the model itself is Master Yi in a full snowman outfit. Carrot sword, top hat, scarf, the whole deal. Sounds goofy and it is goofy. But Riot actually put effort into this one beyond just the costume. New VFX across the board for an Epic tier skin, which at 1350 RP you’d expect, but they delivered here more than some other Epics in the same price range.

Alpha Strike sends snowflake particles everywhere when you Q into a group. Looks clean in teamfights, honestly better visual clarity than some of his other skins. Meditate has this frosty aura around him. Not sure if it’s just me but the W animation feels slightly more readable to enemies, which could be a downside if you’re trying to bait abilities in lane.

Wuju Style and Highlander both get the winter treatment. E procs have this icy hit effect, and when you pop R the trail behind you leaves snow particles on the Rift. Been running this in Diamond for a couple seasons now and the R trail is genuinely satisfying when you’re chasing down the backline after a teamfight breaks open. The recall animation is the highlight though. Master Yi builds a little snowman. Simple concept, perfect execution.

Voice lines stay base, no new VO. Standard for the tier. Base Micha Berman voice work still holds up fine.

The Winter Wonder line and release context

Snow Man Yi dropped December 6, 2018. Late season 8 if I remember right. Part of the Winter Wonder skinline, which has some bangers in it. Winter Wonder Soraka, Neeko, the whole holiday roster. Master Yi fits the theme surprisingly well because the snowman costume plays into his meditation pose during W. Little details like that.

Rudy Siswanto nailed the splash. Yi standing in a snowy forest with the carrot sword raised, top hat slightly tilted. The composition works. Check his other League splashes, consistently good work.

5 chromas available for this one. Obsidian is my pick, turns the whole snowman aesthetic dark and gives it an evil snowman vibe that reads way better in game than you’d think. Rose Quartz goes pink which is fun for the meme factor in solo queue. Pearl keeps it clean and frosty if you want to stay on theme. The other two are fine but those three stood out to me after cycling through all of them over maybe 23 games one weekend when I first got the skin.

Legacy vault skin. Can’t just grab it whenever you want. Comes back during winter events or you need to roll it from chests. Kinda feels like that makes it more worth owning since you dont see it as often in your games. Played against maybe 4 or 5 Snow Man Yi players total this past season.

How it stacks up for Master Yi mains

Real talk though. Master Yi has a massive skin catalog. Eternal Sword Yi exists. Cosmic Blade exists. PROJECT Yi exists. Snow Man Yi is competing against some serious options. Where this one wins is personality. None of those other skins make you laugh when you lock in. This one does.

For jungle clear specifically the VFX read well against camps. Alpha Strike particles pop against the darker jungle background, and the snowflake effects on E procs give you good visual feedback on your auto resets. (Random aside: my duo partner refuses to play with me when I use this skin because the carrot sword tilts him.) Practical stuff aside, it just feels good to gank a lane as a snowman.

Could be wrong here but I think this is the best “fun” Master Yi skin. If you want serious, go Eternal Sword or PROJECT. If you want to enjoy the game and not take yourself too seriously while still having solid VFX, Snow Man Yi is the pick. Had this in rotation since season 9 I think or 10 dont remember, and I keep coming back to it every December.

Should you buy it?

Verdict time. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. New VFX across Q, W, E, R. Great recall animation. Strong splash. Five chromas if you want variety. The only real knock is that it’s a Legacy skin so you can’t just buy it whenever. If you see it available during a winter event or you roll it from a chest, absolutely keep it.

Skip it if you only play Master Yi as a serious climbing pick and want something intimidating. This skin is not intimidating. It’s a snowman with a carrot. But if you main Yi and want something in your collection that makes the grind feel lighter during those late-game scaling comps where you’re just farming until three items, Snow Man Yi delivers. Top pick for Yi mains who don’t take themselves too seriously. Worth 1350 RP if you main Master Yi.
