First time I saw Coin Emperor Tahm Kench in a loading screen I thought someone modded the game. Tahm Kench dressed as a golden fortune god with coins pouring out of him is one of the most ridiculous concepts Riot has shipped. Been running this in Diamond support games since season 9 and the reactions from teammates never get old. Not gonna lie, the splash alone sold me before I even saw the in-game model.

What Coin Emperor actually changes on the Rift

The model rework here is substantial for an Epic skin. Tahm Kench goes from river demon to a full Lunar Revel fortune deity. Gold robes, a massive coin medallion around his neck, and that hat. The hat alone does more work than some entire skin redesigns. His tongue gets this golden shimmer that catches light in teamfights, which sounds minor but you notice it every time you Q someone in lane.

VFX got a proper overhaul. His Q tongue lash trails gold particles and coins. Gorgeous stuff. W is where it gets fun though – when you devour an enemy or ally, the golden particle burst makes it feel way more impactful than base. Could be wrong here but I think the devour animation reads slightly different too, like the gold energy swirl is more visible to your team. Helps with coordination when you’re trying to peel for your ADC in a messy dragon fight.

The recall animation is peak comedy. Tahm Kench sits down and starts eating coins like they’re snacks. Played maybe 40 games with this skin last Tuesday night through Wednesday morning and I kept recalling just to watch it. (Random aside: my duo partner got so annoyed at me spamming recall in fountain that he threatened to int.) Base voice lines, no changes on the VO front. Standard for a 1350 RP Epic. The existing Tahm Kench voice is already dripping with personality so its fine honestly.

The Lunar Revel line and where this fits

Coin Emperor Tahm Kench dropped January 28, 2019. Right in the middle of the Lunar Revel event for that year. Pan Chengwei nailed the splash – the composition with Tahm sitting on a throne of gold surrounded by red lanterns captures the whole vibe perfectly. Season 9 was a weird time for support meta but Tahm was still seeing decent play, so the timing worked out.

The Lunar Revel skinline is one of Riot’s most consistent themes. Every year they cook something good for it. Coin Emperor fits Tahm Kench’s greedy personality better than maybe any other thematic could. The whole champion fantasy is about consuming and hoarding, so making him a literal gold emperor just works on every level.

Legacy vault skin, so you cant just grab it whenever. Gotta wait for the Lunar Revel event to roll around or get lucky with Hextech crafting. Kinda feels like that scarcity adds to the appeal. Seen maybe 5 of these total in my ranked games all season, and every time someone locks it in I respect the pick immediately.

6 chromas available if you can find them. Obsidian turns the whole scheme dark and moody which honestly clashes with the fortune god concept but looks clean in game. Amethyst hits this purple-gold combo that reads better than it should on the Rift. Pearl is the sleeper pick – white and gold Tahm Kench looks regal. The rest fill out the set but those three are the ones worth caring about.

Is Coin Emperor Tahm Kench worth 1350 RP?

Real verdict: this is the best Tahm Kench skin if you want something that leans into his personality rather than fighting against it. High Noon is flashier. Arcana has more going on mechanically. But Coin Emperor just gets who Tahm Kench is as a character.

1350 RP feels fair for what you get. New VFX across abilities, a recall that actually makes you laugh, and a model that transforms the champion silhouette without losing readability. For Tahm Kench mains specifically this should be in your rotation. Real talk though, the Legacy availability is the biggest obstacle. If you see it in the shop during Lunar Revel, don’t sleep on it.

Been maining Tahm Kench with this skin on and off since it released and I keep coming back to it over newer options. There’s something about the gold particles on Q poke in lane that just hits different. Not the most mechanically impressive Epic in the game, but the thematic execution is S-tier. Might be overthinking it but I think Coin Emperor is the Tahm Kench skin if you can only own one. That ranked game last week where I saved my Jinx three times in a row with devour – every single one looked cinematic with those gold VFX. Worth it.
