Zeri Counters: Who Beats Zeri

Updated for patch 26.21. Ability details come from Riot’s official game data for this patch.

Zeri counters are bot laners who outrange her 550 attack range, hide behind minions to block Burst Fire, or burst her before Lightning Crash builds speed. Zeri is a hyper-mobile marksman whose Burst Fire hits only the first enemy, so lane pressure and long-range poke beat her early.

Our five picks come from her kit, not from win rates.

Why is Zeri hard to counter?

  • Living Battery (passive): her attacks deal magic damage and count as Abilities; moving and casting Burst Fire charge her Sparkpack for a stronger next attack.
  • Burst Fire (Q): 7 rounds of attack damage to the first enemy hit, treated as an Attack.
  • Ultrashock Laser (W): a pulse that slows and damages the first enemy, turning into a long-range laser if it hits a wall. Cooldown 12/11/10/9/8.
  • Spark Surge (E): a short dash that makes Burst Fire pierce, vaulting over any terrain she touches. Cooldown 24/22.5/21/19.5/18.
  • Lightning Crash (R): a nova of electricity, then bonus damage and stacking Move Speed that refreshes on each champion hit, with Burst Fire becoming a chaining triple shot. Cooldown 80/75/70.

Zeri plays like no other marksman. Her main attack is Burst Fire, a skillshot that stops on the first enemy, and Spark Surge sends her flying over walls. Once Lightning Crash is up, every hit on a champion makes her faster and her shots chain between targets. That’s a lot of kiting power. The weak spot? Burst Fire stops on minions until Spark Surge makes it pierce, and Spark Surge has a 24 second cooldown at rank 1.

Which champions are the best Zeri counters?

Caitlyn

Caitlyn’s 650 range against Zeri’s 550 decides the early lane. Zeri has to walk into Headshot range just to farm. Traps placed on her landing spots punish Spark Surge, and a trapped target gets an empowered Headshot from twice the distance. The 90 Caliber Net slows and knocks Caitlyn back out of Burst Fire range. And when a low Zeri tries to vault away over a wall, Ace in the Hole can still reach her from a huge distance (her teammates can block it, though, so check who’s nearby).

Miss Fortune

Miss Fortune turns an early lead into a lot of damage. Love Tap (passive) adds bonus physical damage every time she attacks a new target, and Double Up (Q) bounces a bullet to the target behind, which can reach a Zeri hiding behind her minion. Make It Rain (E) slows an area. Strut (W) adds Attack Speed. Bullet Time (R) fires waves of bullets into a cone, each able to crit. Zeri caught in that cone without Spark Surge? She’s in trouble.

Draven

Draven’s Spinning Axe adds bonus physical damage to every attack he catches, and the lane goes his way from level 1. Blood Rush gives Move Speed and Attack Speed whenever he needs to chase. Stand Aside throws both axes to knock enemies aside and slow them, useful when Zeri tries to dash past. Whirling Death crosses the map and executes. League of Draven (passive) earns him bonus gold for kills, so an early lead gets bigger fast.

Ezreal

Ezreal can play safe against Zeri and still poke. Mystic Shot (Q) damages and lowers all his cooldowns when it hits. His orb, Essence Flux, latches onto a champion and pops on his next hit. Arcane Shift (E) teleports him a short way and fires a homing bolt, an answer to her Spark Surge dive. The ultimate, a long global beam, punishes her for standing in a line with her support. Rising Spell Force (passive) stacks Attack Speed on each spell hit. Not flashy, look, but safe.

Kalista

Kalista matches Zeri’s mobility. Martial Poise (passive) lets her lunge a short distance with every attack, so she kites as hard as Zeri does. Rend (E) rips out the spears in a target to slow and deal escalating damage, and Pierce (Q) passes through the enemies it kills. Her bonded support (the Oathsworn) adds damage on shared targets through Sentinel. Fate’s Call (R) pulls the Oathsworn ally to her, who can then dash and knock enemy champions back. Hard to play, though (very hard, if we’re being picky).

How do you play the lane against Zeri?

  • Stand behind your minions. Burst Fire hits only the first enemy unless Spark Surge is active.
  • Trade when Spark Surge is down; it’s on a 24 second cooldown at rank 1.
  • Don’t fight her near walls. Ultrashock Laser becomes a long-range laser when it hits one, and Spark Surge vaults over terrain.
  • Disengage when Lightning Crash is active; her Move Speed stacks on each champion hit.
  • Watch the Sparkpack. A fully charged attack deals bonus damage.

Which items counter Zeri?

She deals mixed damage. Burst Fire counts as an Attack, so Plated Steelcaps reduce it by 10%. Her basic attacks deal magic damage, which makes Mercury’s Treads, Wit’s End or Maw of Malmortius useful. Banshee’s Veil and Edge of Night carry Annul, a Spell Shield against the next enemy Ability; since her attacks count as Abilities, it may block one, but test it before relying on it. Randuin’s Omen slows nearby enemies with Humility. To be fair, positioning matters more than items in this lane. Every item is in our items database, and Plated Steelcaps has its own page.

When is Zeri at her weakest?

Early, while minions block Burst Fire. Without Spark Surge, every shot stops on the first enemy, so a lane that stands behind its wave limits her damage a lot. Long-range lanes keep her from farming safely.

Without Lightning Crash, too. Its cooldown is 80 seconds at rank 1 (70 at rank 3), and without it she’s a short-range marksman with one dash on a long cooldown. That’s when your team should force fights. In practice, she’s at her most dangerous when it’s up.

New to bot lane? Read our guide to LoL roles first. Honestly, her Zaunite looks are worth a scroll on the Zeri skins page. Got her on the Howling Abyss? Try the Zeri ARAM guide. Long story short, Zeri counters stand behind minions, trade while Spark Surge is down, and back off when Lightning Crash starts.
