Olaf ARAM Build and Guide

Updated for patch 26.21. Ability details come from Riot’s official game data for this patch; ARAM balance numbers come from the League of Legends Wiki’s champion data.

An Olaf ARAM build stacks Attack Speed, Life Steal and Health, so he can run into the enemy team with Ragnarok and keep swinging while he heals. The Howling Abyss gives him a small buff: Olaf deals 105% damage in ARAM, with every other number left alone. A berserker who gets stronger as he gets hurt is in his element in a corridor full of enemies.

These picks come from his patch 26.21 ability text and the current item shop. No win rates involved.

How is Olaf changed in ARAM?

ARAM modifier Olaf
Damage dealt 105%

One small buff. Olaf’s damage goes up by 5%, and the damage he takes is the same as on the Rift. That includes the true damage he deals to himself with Reckless Swing, which hits a touch harder on the target now while costing him the same. Does a few percent matter? On a champion who heals from his own damage through Life Steal, yes, a little: more damage dealt means a little more healing too. Honestly, the bigger difference is the map, where every fight is a brawl he can walk straight into.

Why does Olaf fit the Howling Abyss?

Because ARAM fights go long, and Olaf’s kit gets better the longer and messier a fight gets. What Riot’s text says for patch 26.21:

  • Berserker Rage (passive): Attack Speed and Life Steal scaling with missing Health.
  • Undertow (Q): an axe thrown to a spot, damaging everything on its path and reducing Armor and Move Speed; grabbing it resets the cooldown. Cooldown 9.
  • Tough It Out (W): extra Attack Speed plus a Shield. Cooldown 16/15/14/13/12.
  • Reckless Swing (E): true damage to both the target and Olaf, refunded on a kill. Cooldown 11/10/9/8/7.
  • Ragnarok (R): passive Armor and Magic Resist; active immunity to disables while he keeps attacking. Cooldown 100/90/80.

Random teams in ARAM tend to carry a lot of crowd control, and Ragnarok ignores all of it as long as Olaf keeps hitting things. Undertow passes through every enemy on its path, so in a lane where they stand in a line, one axe cuts Armor on several targets at once. Berserker Rage handles the rest: the lower he drops, the faster he attacks and the more he heals. Put simply, his worst moment is the first five seconds of a fight, and his best is the last five.

What should an Olaf ARAM build focus on?

Life Steal, Health and a bit of Tenacity for the moments Ragnarok is down. Real talk, the most common mistake is going full damage and dying before Berserker Rage ever kicks in.

Blade of The Ruined King comes first. Mist’s Edge adds bonus physical damage based on the target’s current Health, which chews through ARAM’s stacked tanks, and its 10% Life Steal combines with Berserker Rage’s. Clawing Shadows slows a champion after 3 attacks, which keeps targets in reach for a melee champion. It also brings 25% Attack Speed.

Black Cleaver is second. Carve cuts the target’s Armor by 6% per hit, stacking 5 times, on top of the Armor reduction from Undertow, and Fervor gives Move Speed when he deals physical damage. That speed is how he catches people trying to walk away. The 400 Health matters as much as the damage.

Third, Sterak’s Gage. Drop under 30% Health and Lifeline throws a decaying Shield on him for 4.5 seconds (right in Berserker Rage’s sweet spot). The shield buys the seconds he needs at his most dangerous. Add 20% Tenacity for the times Ragnarok is on cooldown.

Spirit Visage rounds out the four. Boundless Vitality increases heals and shields on him by 25%, so Life Steal, Tough It Out’s Shield and the Sterak’s shield all get bigger. With 50 Magic Resist on top, it’s the answer to magic damage teams. Against heavy physical damage, Death’s Dance swaps in. Boots are Mercury’s Treads, for 30% Tenacity.

How do you play Olaf on the Howling Abyss?

  • Throw Undertow down the line of enemies. It damages and slows everyone it passes through, and picking it up resets the cooldown.
  • Press Ragnarok before you walk into crowd control, not after the first stun lands.
  • Keep attacking while Ragnarok is up. The disable immunity lasts only as long as you do.
  • Use Reckless Swing to finish low targets. The Health cost comes back if it kills.
  • Don’t panic at low Health. Berserker Rage gives the most Attack Speed and Life Steal right then.

How do no-recall shopping and Mark work for Olaf?

There’s no recall on the Abyss, and buying happens only at the fountain, at the start and after each death. For Olaf, that means Life Steal is his main source of healing, which is the reason Blade of The Ruined King comes first. In practice, the relics on the lane help between fights (when nobody on your team grabs them first). Reckless Swing costs Health with every non-lethal cast (nobody refunds that), so watch your bar before spamming it.

Mark is the snowball: hit a champion, then dash to them. Summoner spells are locked once loading starts. Olaf has no dash of his own, so Mark fixes his biggest weakness, the walk in. Throw it at a backliner, press Ragnarok, dash in, swing. Is it reliable? Not always, but when it lands, the enemy carry has no way to stop him for the next few seconds. To be fair, that’s most of what Olaf wants from a game.

Is Olaf good in ARAM?

Yes. The 105% damage dealt buff is small, but long fights, clumped enemies and plenty of crowd control all favour a champion with Ragnarok and missing-Health scaling. His weakness is getting there: no dash, a 125 range attack and only Undertow’s slow to stop people kiting him.

The top laners who keep him at range are in our guide to Olaf’s counters. For how top lane works on the Rift, see our LoL roles guide. Every item number above is in the League items database, and his skins are on the Olaf skins page.

So, the Olaf ARAM build is Blade of The Ruined King, Black Cleaver, Sterak’s Gage and Spirit Visage on Mercury’s Treads: Ragnarok on, axe down the line, and keep swinging.

FAQ

Is Olaf buffed in ARAM?

Slightly. For patch 26.21, the League of Legends Wiki gives him 105% damage dealt in ARAM, and nothing else changes.

What items should Olaf build in ARAM?

Blade of The Ruined King, Black Cleaver, Sterak’s Gage and Spirit Visage, with Mercury’s Treads. Death’s Dance replaces Spirit Visage against physical damage teams.

Why Spirit Visage on Olaf?

It increases heals and shields on him, which boosts his Life Steal, the Shield from Tough It Out and the Shield from Sterak’s Gage.

Does Ragnarok make Olaf immune to crowd control?

To disables, yes, as long as he keeps attacking. Passively it also grants Armor and Magic Resist.

How was this build chosen?

By reading Olaf’s patch 26.21 abilities against each item’s effects. No win-rate data was used.
