Been running Alistar on and off since season 2, and Unchained Alistar holds a weird nostalgic spot for me. This was the skin you got for subscribing to Riot’s YouTube channel back in the day. Free. No RP required. Just click a button and boom, new Alistar skin in your collection. Felt like a steal at the time, and honestly it still looks decent enough for what it cost you: nothing.

What Unchained Alistar actually changes

Real talk though, dont expect fireworks here. This is a Standard tier skin through and through. Alistar gets broken shackles hanging from his wrists and ankles, darker fur with some battle scars, and a generally more aggressive look compared to base. The chains are the centerpiece. They dangle and swing during his animations, which adds a nice weight to his movement that base Alistar lacks.

No new VFX on Q or W. Voice lines stay base. No recall animation changes. What you see in the splash is basically what you get: a bull who broke free from captivity and is not happy about the experience. The texture work on the scars reads well in-game, especially during teamfights where Unchained Alistar stands out slightly more than the default purple model.

Played maybe 30 games of support Alistar with this skin last season around late November, and the chain particles on the model caught my duo’s attention immediately. Small detail but it gives the Headbutt-Pulverize combo a heavier feel. Placebo? Probably. But I’ll take it.

The history behind this one

Unchained Alistar released September 22, 2011. Part of the Chronicle skinline, which Riot used for these promotional tie-in skins early on. The whole YouTube subscribe promotion ran for years before Riot eventually vaulted it. Kinda feels like one of those “you had to be there” skins now.

No splash artist credited in the data, which tracks for skins from that era. Riot wasnt exactly documenting their art pipeline in 2011. The splash itself is solid though: Alistar mid-charge, chains snapping, pure rage energy. (Random aside: I used this splash as my Discord avatar for like eight months in season 10 and nobody recognized it.)

Since the promo ended, this sits in the Legacy vault. Hextech only these days. You either got it back when it was free or you’re rolling chests hoping for the drop. Not sure if it’s just me but I see maybe one Unchained Alistar per 50 games in Diamond. Most Alistar mains run Moo Cow or Blackfrost now.

Should you care about Unchained Alistar?

Straight talk: this is a collector’s piece at this point. The special pricing meant zero RP investment for anyone who grabbed it during the promotion window. If you missed that window, you’re at the mercy of Hextech crafting, and there’s better Alistar skins to chase.

For engage support mains who W-Q flash combo in bot lane, Unchained Alistar does the job. The chain aesthetic works. But Moo Cow exists at 975 RP with the cowbell emote spam, and that skin alone wins lane prio through psychological warfare. Conqueror Alistar hits harder visually for the ranked grinder crowd.

Could be wrong here but I think the main appeal now is flex value. Loading screen drops, someone sees Unchained Alistar, they know you’ve been around since pre-season 2. That carries weight in champ select. Not gameplay weight, obviously. But the vibes matter when you’re locking in a support Alistar and your ADC is already tilted from last game.

Worth keeping if you have it. Worth hunting in chests? Only if you’re an Alistar completionist or you care about the OG flex. Otherwise your Hextech luck is better spent elsewhere.
