Chronicle Skins

Chronicle is one of those skinlines that most players dont even realize exists. Not gonna lie, I had to actually look it up when someone mentioned it in my ranked lobby last season. It's this weird grab bag of older skins that share a loosely medieval-fantasy aesthetic, some prestige editions mixed in with legacy stuff from 2010-2011. Six skins total across Xin Zhao, Alistar, Morgana, Zilean, and Sona. The line never got a big event or cinematic, it just kind of appeared and Riot moved on. But there's actually some interesting stuff buried in here if you know where to look.

What Ties the Chronicle Line Together

Kinda feels like Riot was experimenting early on with a "dark history" theme. The Chronicle skins lean into this weathered, ancient vibe. Think faded scrolls, cracked stone, old-world fantasy that predates the cleaner aesthetic Riot adopted around season 4. The color palette sits in deep golds, aged purples, and muted earth tones across most entries.

The visual signature is subtle compared to something like Arcana or Coven. No shared particle effects tying everything together. No unified recall animation. These dropped in 2010-2011 when Riot was still figuring out what a "skinline" even meant. Each skin feels more standalone than connected.

(Random aside: I think Chronicle might be one of the oldest named skinlines that still gets new additions through Prestige versions. Wild that Riot circled back to it.)

What actually connects them is the narrative framing. Chronicle implies a recorded history, stories passed down. Viscero Xin Zhao reads like a gladiator pulled from some ancient text. Unchained Alistar is literally breaking free from historical bondage. Shurima Desert Zilean taps into that time-keeper-as-historian angle. The Prestige editions for Morgana and Sona feel like elevated versions of the same concept, mythologized figures from a chronicle being retold in gold.

Compared to similar old-school lines like Freljord or Pharaoh, Chronicle has this slightly more literary quality. Less "themed costume" and more "character from an old manuscript." Could be wrong here but I think thats the intention behind the name. Whether Riot planned it that deeply back in season 1 is debatable though.

Best Chronicle Skins Worth Your RP

Real talk though. Six skins is a small pool. But the quality range is massive here, from outdated 975 RP relics to genuinely clean Mythic prestige editions.

Prestige Veiled Lady Morgana sits at the top for me. The Mythic tier treatment gives Morgana this ethereal gold-and-white palette that reads beautifully on the Rift. Her Q binding looks distinct enough from base that you won't confuse it with other Morgana skins in teamfights. Been running this in my Diamond games when I get autofilled support and honestly it feels premium. The veil motif across her model adds this layered mystery that base Morgana completely lacks.

Prestige Requiem Sona is the other Mythic entry and it earns the tier. Sona already has clean animations at base, so giving her the prestige treatment means every aura pulse and power chord proc looks intentional. Spammed this on my support alt for maybe 40 games last month. The gold particle work on her ult is the standout, the crescendo wave reads clearly even in chaotic 5v5s around dragon.

Trials of Twilight Xin Zhao is the lone Epic at 975 RP. Decent for what it is. The twilight color scheme gives Xin a purple-gray palette that separates it from his other options. Not his best skin by a long shot but if you're a Xin one-trick who wants variety in your rotation, its serviceable. The spear model has some nice detail work.

Viscero Xin Zhao and Unchained Alistar sit in Standard tier. Texture swaps from an era when that was all you got. Unchained Alistar holds nostalgic value since it was a promotional skin back in the day. Viscero is basically just Xin in red armor. Skip it unless you're collecting.

Shurima Desert Zilean rounds out the set. Standard tier, desert palette on the time mage. Looks fine but nothing special by modern standards. Zilean mains have better options now.

Champion Roster and Thematic Fit

Five champions across six skins. Xin Zhao gets two entries which makes sense given his warrior-historian archetype. The full roster: Xin Zhao, Alistar, Morgana, Zilean, and Sona.

Might be overthinking it but I think the champion selection actually works thematically. Zilean is literally a time keeper, recording history is his whole deal. Sona's music tells stories. Morgana's fallen angel narrative fits a dark chronicle. Xin Zhao's Demacian loyalty reads like something out of an epic poem. Even Alistar breaking chains has that "recorded struggle" energy.

Who feels forced? Honestly nobody in this particular lineup. Small roster means Riot could be selective. Every pick has a logical thread connecting them to the "recorded history" concept.

Who should get a Chronicle skin next? Been thinking about this since last Tuesday when I was grinding ranked. Ryze would be perfect, he literally carries scrolls and seeks ancient knowledge. Azir is another obvious pick, emperor of a fallen civilization whose history is literally buried in sand. Nasus too, the librarian-god archetype is RIGHT there. Maybe even Jhin, the artistic serial killer documenting his "performances" has chronicle energy.

(Sidebar for support mains specifically: the two Mythic prestige skins being Morgana and Sona means this is lowkey a support skinline in its premium tier. Nobody talks about this.)

Tier Breakdown and Value

Here's where Chronicle gets interesting. The tier distribution is unusual. Three Standards, one Epic, two Mythics. No Legendaries. No Ultimates.

The Standards all sit at 975 RP which was standard pricing back in 2010-2011. By today's standards these are basically 520 RP quality skins at an inflated legacy price. Not worth buying for visual quality. Only for collection purposes or nostalgia.

Trials of Twilight Xin Zhao at Epic tier is the middle ground. 975 RP is cheap for an Epic. Good value if you play Xin regularly and want something different from his Dragonslayer or Cosmic Defender options.

The two Mythic prestige editions carry the entire line. Full stop. Without Prestige Veiled Lady Morgana and Prestige Requiem Sona, Chronicle would be completely forgettable. These are loot-exclusive prestige skins though, so you can't just buy them. Need to roll them from chests or craft through Mythic Essence. That exclusivity adds perceived value but also frustration if you actually want them.

Price range across the line: 975 RP for the purchasable ones, Mythic Essence for the prestige editions. Compared to something like Coven or Spirit Blossom where you're looking at 1350-1820 RP entry points, Chronicle is technically cheap to collect. The three Standards plus the Epic would run you 3900 RP total. Under 30 bucks for four skins. Not bad for completionists.

The Mythics being loot-gated means you either get lucky or you grind events. Season 13 I think I spent three months worth of event tokens before I rolled one prestige skin I actually wanted. Could be coping but the grind is part of the appeal for some collectors.

Is Chronicle Worth Investing In?

Not sure if it's just me but Chronicle feels like a skinline that exists more for historical completeness than for actual player demand. Nobody in my ranked games has ever said "yo nice Chronicle skin." Its not a flex line. Its not a prestige collection people chase.

But here's what I'll say. The two Mythic prestige skins are genuinely good. If you main Morgana or Sona and you manage to roll either prestige edition from Hextech crafting, keep it. The Standard tier skins are skippable unless you're going for the "own every skin" achievement or you have specific nostalgia for season 1 era aesthetics.

Trials of Twilight Xin Zhao is the best value purchase in the line. Epic quality at 975 RP with a color scheme that reads cleanly in lane and in teamfights. If you're climbing with Xin in the jungle or top, worse ways to spend your RP.

The skinline launched in 2010 with its Standard tier entries. That's over fifteen years ago. The fact that Riot came back to add Mythic prestige editions tells me someone at the studio sees value in the Chronicle concept. Whether we get more additions is anyone's guess but the precedent exists.

Fair warning: the older skins in this line have NOT been updated with modern VFX or model quality. Viscero Xin Zhao looks like it's from a different game compared to current releases. Unchained Alistar similarly shows its age. If you're expecting 2024-2025 quality from the Standard tier entries, adjust your expectations way down. These are museum pieces at this point.

How many Chronicle skins are there?

Six total. Three Standard tier skins from 2010-2011, one Epic, and two Mythic prestige editions added later. Small line compared to stuff like Coven or Project but the Mythic entries punch above their weight. Been tracking skin counts for years and Chronicle stays niche.

What is the best Chronicle skin?

Prestige Veiled Lady Morgana takes it for me. The gold-white palette reads clean on the Rift, her abilities look distinct in teamfights, and the veil motif adds character. Prestige Requiem Sona is a close second. Both Mythic tier entries carry this line hard. The Standards are outdated.

Which champions have Chronicle skins?

Five champions: Xin Zhao (two skins), Alistar, Morgana, Zilean, and Sona. Xin gets both a Standard and Epic entry. Morgana and Sona got the Mythic prestige treatment. Small roster but thematically tight, everyone connects to the "recorded history" concept naturally.

Does Chronicle have Legendary skins?

No Legendaries in Chronicle. The line jumps from Epic straight to Mythic prestige tier. Kinda unusual distribution honestly. Most skinlines this size have at least one Legendary anchor but Chronicle skips it entirely. The two Mythic prestige editions are the premium offerings here.

When did the Chronicle skinline release?

Original Chronicle skins dropped in 2010-2011, early League days. Season 1 era. The Mythic prestige editions came much later. One of the oldest named skinlines still getting attention from Riot. Pre-dates most of what people think of as "modern" League cosmetics by years.

Are Chronicle skins worth buying?

Depends which ones. The Standard tier entries at 975 RP look dated by 2025 standards. Collector value only. Trials of Twilight Xin Zhao is decent value as an Epic. The Mythic prestige editions are genuinely good but loot-gated so you cant just buy them outright. Worth keeping if you roll them.

Do Chronicle skins have chromas?

The Standard tier Chronicle skins from 2010-2011 predate the chroma system entirely. No chromas on those. The newer Mythic prestige editions may have chroma variants depending on their release window. Check the individual skin pages for current chroma availability on each entry.

Will Riot make more Chronicle skins?

Maybe. The fact that Riot added Mythic prestige editions to a 2010 skinline shows they havent forgotten it. Could see them adding champions like Ryze or Azir who fit the "recorded history" theme. No official announcements though. Riot keeps their skin pipeline pretty close to the chest until PBE drops.
