First game I played with Zap’Maw was around 1 AM on a Wednesday, queued up for a Diamond ranked game and instantly got compliments in champ select. Kog’Maw as a little electric creature with that Monster Tamers aesthetic just works. Not gonna lie, I wasnt expecting much from this skinline when it dropped but the moment I saw the splash I knew this one had something going for it.

What Zap’Maw actually brings to the Rift

So the whole concept is Kog’Maw reimagined as a pocket monster. Electric type, obviously. The model swap is solid for an Epic tier skin. Kog’Maw gets this bright yellow body with blue accents, big round eyes that make him look way less terrifying than his base form. Cute factor is through the roof.

New VFX across the board. His Q shoots out this electric bolt that reads cleanly in lane, you can actually track it better than some of his other skins. W range indicator has these little sparks around the edge. Pretty useful honestly. E leaves a trail of electric puddles on the ground, and the color contrast against Summoner’s Rift is sharp. Good for zoning in teamfights when your comp needs you to poke from the backline.

The R is where it gets fun. Each ult shot drops like a little thunderbolt. Been running this in my Diamond games for a couple months and the R animation feels snappier than base, even though I know thats placebo. The recall animation is new too. Kog’Maw does this whole trainer interaction thing, fits the Monster Tamers fantasy perfectly. Voice lines stay base though, no new VO. Kinda feels like a missed opportunity but at 1350 RP you cant really complain.

(Random aside: my duo partner who mains ADC refuses to play Kog’Maw unless he has this skin equipped now. Says it makes cs-ing more satisfying.)

The Monster Tamers line and Zap’Maw’s place in it

Monster Tamers released August 11, 2022. Late into season 12. Ina Wong and West Studio handled the artwork, and they captured the vibe perfectly. The splash has Kog’Maw mid-attack with lightning crackling around him, trainer visible in the background.

The Monster Tamers skinline is one of Riot’s more niche drops. Not everyone vibes with the anime creature-collector aesthetic but for the people who do, its a strong set. Kog’Maw fits naturally here. He already looks like something you’d catch in tall grass pre-6 and evolve into a late-game scaling beast.

8 chromas total for Zap’Maw. Amethyst is my go-to, the purple electricity reads way different from base and gives off dark energy vibes. Aquamarine turns him into a water-type situation which is funny given Kog’Maw’s whole acid theme. Pearl is clean but maybe too subtle for my taste. Could be wrong here but I think Ruby actually clashes with the electric concept. The red and yellow together look like a fast food mascot. Permanent shop, grab it whenever.

Is Zap’Maw worth 1350 RP?

Real verdict: for Kog’Maw mains this is an easy buy. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. New model, full VFX overhaul, new recall. You know what surprised me? How much the auto attack particles change the feel of playing Kog’Maw. With W active the electric autos just hit different. Played maybe 40 games with this last season and I keep coming back to it over Bee’Maw and Battlecast.

If you’re not a Kog’Maw one-trick, might be overthinking it but I’d still say pick it up on sale. The Monster Tamers concept is unique enough that it stands out in the loading screen. Seen maybe 5 of these in my games all season which means you wont run into mirror skin situations in bot lane.

Skip it only if you already own Hextech Kog’Maw and feel committed to that. Otherwise Zap’Maw is top pick for Kog’Maw mains, especially if you like the cleaner, brighter aesthetic over the darker skins in his catalog. Three things stood out across all my games: ult VFX, recall animation, auto attacks with W. That combo at this price point is hard to argue against. Standard Epic pricing, above-average skin.
