Caterpillar Kog'Maw - Splash, Price & Chromas

First time I saw Caterpillar Kog’Maw loading in, I thought someone was trolling. Bright green caterpillar body on a Void creature that literally eats everything. The contrast is hilarious and kinda charming at the same time. Been running Kog’Maw on and off since season 3, and this skin still catches me off guard when I see it in champ select. Rare sight honestly.

What the skin actually changes

Real talk though, this is a 520 RP Standard tier skin from 2010. Temper your expectations. Caterpillar Kog’Maw is a model swap and texture change. Thats it. No new VFX on Q, W, E, or R. No new recall animation. Voice lines stay base, Patrick Seitz doing his thing unchanged. The abilities all fire with the same purple Void particles you know from default Kog’Maw.

The model itself is where the fun lives. Kog’Maw gets this bright green segmented caterpillar body, little legs poking out, and the whole silhouette reads completely different from base. Honestly not gonna lie, in a teamfight at dragon pit last week I almost didnt recognize the Kog’Maw on the enemy team because the green just blends into the river grass. Might be overthinking it but there could be a slight visual advantage there in certain Rift spots.

The head retains that signature Kog’Maw mouth, wide open and hungry. But the caterpillar segments trailing behind give him this almost cute waddle when he’s chasing down cs in lane. Playing this skin, the auto attack animation feels the same but looks funnier with those stubby legs working overtime. Simple change – huge impact on the vibe.

The Storybook line and release context

Caterpillar Kog’Maw dropped June 24, 2010. Season one era. The Storybook skinline is one of those early Riot concepts that feels more like a fun experiment than a full thematic commitment. You know what surprised me? The skin holds up visually better than some other 2010 releases I could name.

No chromas on this one. Zero. Which makes sense given the era and price point. 520 RP was the ask back then, and for a model-only change that’s about right. (Random aside: I keep hoping Riot does a Butterfly Kog’Maw evolution skin someday, feels like the obvious follow-up that never happened.)

This one sits in the Legacy vault now, so you cant just walk into the shop and grab it. Hextech only these days, or you wait for one of those rare Legacy sales Riot does maybe once a year. Seen maybe two of these in my Diamond games all season, possibly three if you count that ARAM from last Tuesday around midnight.

Should you chase this caterpillar?

Verdict time. Caterpillar Kog’Maw is a novelty skin from a different era of League. No new VFX, no VO refresh, no recall. Pure model swap. But the model swap is genuinely funny and distinctive. If you’re a Kog’Maw main or one-trick who wants something nobody else runs in your games, this has that rare factor going for it.

520 RP feels fair for what you get, assuming you can even find it. The Legacy vault status actually works in its favor for collector types. Skip this if you want flashy particles on your W poke or big ult explosions. Grab it if you appreciate the old school Storybook charm and want your ADC to look like a children’s book character while melting the backline late-game. Kinda feels like the skin equivalent of bringing a pool noodle to a sword fight. And I respect that energy.

Better Kog’Maw skins exist for competitive vibes. Battlecast and Hextech both outclass this for VFX. But for personality? Caterpillar Kog’Maw is hard to beat. Been season 9 I think or 10 when I first rolled it from a chest, and it still gets a reaction in lobby chat every time I lock in.
