First time I saw Samurai Yi in a loading screen was back in like season 2 or 3, cant remember exactly. Some random Master Yi on my team just hard carrying with this old school look and I remember thinking the splash alone sold it. Simple concept, clean execution. Not every skin needs to reinvent the wheel.
What Samurai Yi actually changes
Real talk though, this is a 520 RP Standard tier skin from 2011. You’re not getting new particles, no fresh voice lines, no recall animation. Voice stays default. What you do get is a full model swap that puts Master Yi in traditional samurai armor with a different blade design. The helmet especially stands out, gives him this ronin vibe that fits the champion fantasy way better than the base goggle look.
The color palette leans into deep reds and dark metallics. Played maybe 40 games with this one last season in Diamond and honestly the silhouette reads well in teamfights. You can still track your Q alpha strike targets fine, the E proc animation looks the same but the blade itself has more weight to it visually. Might be overthinking it but the auto attack animations feel like they match the samurai aesthetic even though nothing mechanically changed.
No new VFX on any abilities. Your Q, W, E, R all use base Master Yi particles. Highlander still gives you the same speed glow. Meditate same healing circle. For a skin at this price point thats expected. The model work does the heavy lifting here.
The Legacy line and release context
Samurai Yi dropped March 7, 2011. Early League days. Part of the Legacy skinline which is basically Riot’s catch-all for older skins that dont fit a specific thematic universe. No splash artist credited in the data, which tracks for skins from that era. Riot wasnt exactly documenting their art pipeline back then.
Zero chromas available. Given the age and price tier I doubt Riot ever circles back to add any. (Random aside: I kind of wish they would though, a black and gold chroma on this would go hard.) Shop has it at 520 RP, permanent availability. No vault rotation nonsense, no hextech gambling required.
The skin predates Master Yi’s visual update so it went through the rework treatment. The current version looks significantly better than the original 2011 model. Riot cleaned up the armor detail and the blade geometry during that pass. Been daily driving this on and off since season 9 I think, kept coming back to it between newer Master Yi skins.
Should you buy Samurai Yi?
Straight talk: 520 RP feels fair for what you get. You’re paying for a solid model change on a champion where the base skin looks dated even post-rework. If you main Master Yi and you’re not trying to drop 1350+ on something like PROJECT or Spirit Blossom, this is the budget pick that still looks good in the bot lane or jungle clear.
Not sure if it’s just me but Samurai Yi has this understated quality that the flashier Master Yi skins lack. No particle noise, no distracting effects when you’re trying to track resets in a late-game teamfight. Just clean autos and Q bounces. Had a ranked game last Thursday around midnight where I got a pentakill with this skin and the simplicity actually helped me focus on the engage timing rather than watching pretty particles.
Skip it if you already own Eternal Sword Yi or Cosmic Blade Master Yi. Those are objectively more complete packages with new VFX and animations. But if you’re climbing on a budget or you just appreciate the samurai aesthetic on Master Yi without all the extra, 520 RP well spent for mains. Not the best Master Yi skin full stop, but it earns its slot in the rotation. Solid legacy piece from early League that still holds up after all these years.
