Freljord Sylas

First time I locked in Freljord Sylas was late January 2020, maybe a week after it dropped. Had this ranked session going around 1 AM and my duo partner pinged me to check the shop. Bought it on the spot. Not gonna lie, something about Sylas breaking free from Demacian chains and then showing up dressed in Freljord furs and ice just hits right. The whole fantasy of a mage-thief surviving the frozen north. Solid first impression.

How Freljord Sylas actually looks in game

The model swap is clean. Sylas trades his prison rags for thick pelts and frost-covered armor pieces. His chains glow with this cold blue energy that reads well against the Rift, especially in river fights. The color palette shift from base Sylas is dramatic enough that you actually feel like you’re playing a different character.

VFX got a full rework for this Epic tier. His Q sends out these icy shards instead of the standard magical blast, and the detonation has frost particles spreading outward. Looks great in lane when you’re poking. W heal animation carries a cold mist effect that wraps around Sylas mid-cast. Subtle but I noticed it after maybe 30 games.

E chain throws are where it gets interesting. The chains themselves have this frozen texture, and when you E2 into someone the impact leaves brief ice fragments. Been running this in Diamond for a few seasons on and off, and the E engage feels crisper visually than base. Could be placebo but the hitbox reads cleaner to me. His R, the ult steal, keeps the ice theme going with frost particles wrapping around whatever ability Sylas copies. Kinda feels like it should change color based on the stolen ult but thats asking too much for 1350 RP.

The recall animation is new. Sylas slams his chains into the ground and ice erupts around him. Short, aggressive, fits the character. Voice lines stay base, no new VO for this one.

Freljord skinline and the details

Released January 10, 2020. Season 10 start, right when preseason changes were settling in. Katya Cyan and West Studio handled the artwork, and they captured this feral survivor energy in the splash that the in-game model backs up.

The Freljord skinline is one of Riot’s older thematic groups. Champions adapted to survive the frozen wastes. Sylas fits it better than you’d expect for a Demacian prisoner. The lore angle works: escaped mage finds power in the harshest environment on Runeterra. Freljord Sylas sits alongside Freljord Taliyah in the line, both outsiders claiming the ice for themselves.

4 chromas total. Amethyst is my go-to, the purple chains against the blue fur create this mage royalty look that base doesnt have. Turquoise doubles down on the ice theme, almost too much honestly, you lose contrast. Ruby flips the whole skin warm and I think it defeats the purpose but some people swear by it. (Random aside: my friend uses Pearl chroma exclusively and calls it “ghost Sylas” which, fair enough, it does look spectral.) Available any time in the shop at 1350 RP.

Should you buy Freljord Sylas?

Real verdict: Freljord Sylas is a strong Epic skin that earns its price. The VFX overhaul on all four abilities plus the recall give you enough visual change to justify 1350 RP. Played maybe 200 games with this skin across season 10 through 13, and I keep coming back to it over Lunar Wraith.

If you main Sylas and want one skin, this competes hard with Project Sylas for the top spot. Project has more going on technically but Freljord has that raw, grounded feel that matches Sylas as a character. Might be overthinking it but the Freljord fantasy just suits a chain-wielding rebel better than sci-fi does.

Best pickup for Sylas mains who like the champion’s identity more than flashy effects. 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. Skip it if you already own Project or Ashen Slayer, those cover similar ground with more bells and whistles. But for a clean, thematic Sylas skin that doesn’t distract in teamfights? Top pick. The Amethyst chroma pushes it even higher if you’re willing to spend the extra.
