Arcana Ryze

Ryze has been reworked so many times that I genuinely lost track of which version of his kit I learned first. Season 6 maybe? The current Ryze barely resembles the one I played back then and his older skins carry that disconnect. Tribal Ryze looks like a relic. Zombie Ryze belongs to a different champion. Arcana Ryze from April 14, 2022 is the first skin that makes modern Ryze look like what he is supposed to be: a mage carrying dangerous knowledge. Tarot scholar energy. Bought it the week it dropped, took it into ranked for maybe 12 games straight, never looked back.

Tarot energy on the rune mage’s kit

The model trades the bare-chested blue tattoo look for Arcana robes with gold trim. He carries a scroll covered in arcana glyphs. Looks like somebody who would actually know what a World Rune is, which base Ryze with his gym-bro physique never quite sold. Francis Tneh and West Studio went hard on the splash. Ryze surrounded by tarot cards mid-cast, golden energy pouring from his hands. Composition is strong.

Overload on Q fires a tarot-infused energy bolt with a warm golden trail. Card symbols flicker inside the projectile if you look closely. This is Ryze’s bread-and-butter. You cast Q roughly 400 times per game and the Arcana particle keeps it interesting even on the 300th cast. Maybe just my experience but the Q travel speed looks visually faster on this skin. Identical to base mechanically but the particle shape reads quicker. Could be coping but I started landing more Q poke in lane after switching skins and I’m sticking with that theory.

Rune Prison on W roots with an arcana circle beneath the target’s feet. Golden glyphs lock them in place. Distinct from base in teamfights where confirming your W landed on the right person matters. Spell Flux on E marks enemies with a tarot card icon that spreads on kill. Here’s where Arcana earns its price. You throw E on a caster minion, Q it dead, and the tarot markers ripple outward to the enemy laner and a second minion simultaneously. Tracking E spreads is critical for Ryze combos and this visual genuinely makes it easier. Take this with a grain of salt but my E-Q wave combos got noticeably cleaner after switching.

Realm Warp on R opens a massive portal with floating tarot cards orbiting the rim. Your whole team stands inside what looks like a ritual circle before teleporting. Used R to move four people into baron pit during a ranked game last Wednesday around 11 PM and the golden portal under our feet made a standard shotcall feel cinematic. We got baron. Portal looked incredible doing it.

Chromas and the Arcana line

8 chromas total. Amethyst is the one I keep coming back to. Deep purple palette that reads naturally on a mage without losing the tarot gold accents. Obsidian goes dark but keeps the golden detailing which gives it more depth than most full-dark recolors. Turquoise flips to cool tones and creates this contrast against the warm base version that I didnt expect to like as much as I do.

Released April 14, 2022 at 1350 RP. Epic tier. The Arcana skinline sits alongside Ahri, Camille, Xerath, and a few others. One of Riot’s better thematic drops from that year. Permanent shop availability.

Voice stays default. Dave B. Mitchell’s Ryze voice applies. No VO refresh which is standard for Epic tier. New recall where Ryze deals tarot cards in a spread before teleporting. (Random aside: I have tried to read the actual tarot symbols on the cards during recall and I think they might be real arcana suits. Could be wrong. Either way the animation is slick and it doesnt overstay its welcome.)

Straight talk: best Ryze skin?

Championship Ryze has the rarity factor. SKT Ryze has esports history. Pirate Ryze is the meme pick. None of those look good in a modern ranked game though. Arcana does. The Q spam VFX alone justify 1350 RP because you cast that ability so often that anything making it look better directly improves your experience over hundreds of games.

Locked in Arcana Ryze for maybe 200 games since it dropped and have not considered switching. Amethyst chroma on weekdays, base gold on weekends because apparently I have a system now. 1350 RP well spent. First choice for Ryze mains.
