First time I saw Professor Ryze in a loading screen I thought someone was trolling. Ryze in a graduation cap and robe, holding a scroll like hes about to lecture you on mana management. Played maybe 40 games with this one back in season 10 when I was grinding Diamond on EUW, and honestly the novelty factor alone kept me locked in. Not every skin needs to reinvent the wheel.
What Professor Ryze actually looks like in game
So this is a Standard tier skin at 975 RP, which means you’re getting a model swap and not much else. No new VFX on Q or E, no voice filter, base VO stays. The big draw is the professor outfit itself: dark academic robes, mortarboard cap, and Ryze carrying what looks like a teaching pointer instead of his usual scroll setup. Clean concept.
Not gonna lie, the model holds up better than you’d expect for a 2010 skin. Ryze’s blue skin peeking through the robes gives it this weird contrast that works. The spell effects are all base Ryze particles though, so if you’re the type who needs flashy W roots or custom E spreads, this aint it. Could be wrong here but I think the recall is also default. Just standard Ryze stuff.
In teamfights the skin reads fine. Had a game last Wednesday where I was spamming E-Q combos into their backline and the model stays distinct enough from base that your teammates know you spent money. Small flex. The robes have decent movement animation when you’re kiting around in lane phase, which is basically all Ryze does pre-6 anyway.
The Academy line and release history
Professor Ryze dropped October 5, 2010. Early League days. Xi Zhang handled the artwork on the splash, and it captures the vibe: Ryze standing in front of a chalkboard covered in runes, looking like the most overqualified professor at whatever university exists in Runeterra.
This skin falls under the Academy skinline, which Riot expanded later with skins like Academy Ahri and Academy Vladimir. Professor Ryze was kind of the prototype for that whole “champions in school” concept. (Random aside: the fact that Ryze is the professor and not the student tells you everything about his lore status in League.) The Academy line never hit the same heights as something like PROJECT or Star Guardian, but it has a loyal following among players who like the lighter cosmetic themes.
Sits in the vault these days. Legacy catalog skin, so you cant just grab it whenever. Gotta wait for Legacy sales or hope you roll it from Hextech crafting. Been seeing fewer and fewer of these in my Diamond games honestly, maybe spotted two all season.
Should you pick up Professor Ryze?
Real verdict: 975 RP feels fair for what you get, assuming you can even find it available. The model swap is charming, the concept is solid, and Ryze mains who want something different from the flashier options like Dark Crystal or Guardian of the Sands might appreciate the understated humor here. Kinda feels like a collector skin at this point.
If you’re a Ryze one-trick climbing through ranked, there are better options with actual VFX changes. But if you lock in Ryze occasionally and want a skin that gets a reaction in champ select, Professor Ryze delivers on that front. The scaling mage fantasy meets tenure-track academic energy. Fair price for the package, just gotta catch it when the vault opens.
