Viego Counters: Who Beats Viego

Updated for patch 26.20. Ability details come from Riot’s official game data for this patch.

Viego counters are picks that shut down his W dash, shrug off his stun, or refuse him the reset he needs off a kill. Viego is a melee jungler who deals percent-health damage, heals through his Q, and takes over fallen enemies with his passive, so the best picks keep him from chaining one possession into the next.

The picks below are editorial (based on how each kit interacts with Viego’s abilities). No win-rate data here.

Viego counters: Viego, the Ruined King, splash art

Why is Viego hard to counter?

  • Sovereign’s Domination (passive): enemies who die near him become wraiths, and attacking a wraith lets him take over the dead enemy’s body and heal.
  • Blade of the Ruined King (Q): on-hit percent current health damage, double hits after an ability, and health steal.
  • Spectral Maw (W): a charged dash that stuns the first enemy hit.
  • Harrowed Path (E): Black Mist around terrain where he gains camouflage, Move Speed and Attack Speed.
  • Heartbreaker (R): a short teleport that executes an enemy champion and knocks away nearby allies.

Viego is at his scariest when kills start chaining: every takeover heals him and hands him a whole new kit to throw at you. Deny the first kill, or survive the execute, and his fight falls apart.

Which champions are the best Viego counters?

Poppy

Steadfast Presence (W) stops dashes around her. Spectral Maw is a dash, so Viego’s main engage can end at Poppy’s feet.

Morgana

Black Shield (E) gives an ally a barrier. It absorbs magic damage and disabling effects until it breaks (or until it runs out, whichever comes first, which in a jungle gank usually means it outlasts the engage). Spectral Maw’s stun counts. Direct answer.

Jax

Counter Strike (E) dodges all incoming attacks for a short time and then stuns enemies around Jax. Viego’s damage is mostly auto-attacks boosted by his Q passive, so a well-timed Counter Strike blanks his burst.

Kindred

Lamb’s Respite (R) creates a zone where nothing can die until the effect ends. Heartbreaker is an execute, and his passive needs a death to work, so Kindred’s ultimate can cancel both at once.

Rammus

Defensive Ball Curl (W) jacks up his Armor and Magic Resist and returns damage to anyone hitting him. Viego relies on attacks, so fighting a curled Rammus costs him health every hit.

How do you counter Viego in a fight?

  • Don’t feed the first kill. Every death near him is a possible body to take over and a heal.
  • Watch the charge. Spectral Maw needs a moment to charge before the dash, which gives you time to move out of its line.
  • Check his mist. Harrowed Path hides him near walls, so ward the terrain he is likely to use.
  • Peel the target of his ultimate. Heartbreaker executes one champion, and shields or zones like Kindred’s can save them.

Which items counter Viego?

He steals health with his Q, so Grievous Wounds helps: Bramble Vest and Thornmail apply 40% Wounds when he attacks you, Executioner’s Calling and Mortal Reminder apply it when you deal physical damage. Plated Steelcaps reduce damage from attacks by 10%, and Randuin’s Omen cuts damage from critical strikes by 30%. You can look up every one of these in our LoL items database.

When is Viego at his weakest?

When is the best time to fight him? Before anyone has died. Sovereign’s Domination needs a fallen enemy to take over, and without one he is a melee champion with one dash and one stun.

He is also exposed while Spectral Maw charges. The dash needs a moment to charge before it fires, and in that window he is standing still and easy to hit (a good time for your own crowd control).

Does vision help against him? Quite a lot. Harrowed Path hides him in Black Mist near terrain, so wards on the walls he likes to use take away his surprise engage.

Is Viego hard to play against for newer players?

Honestly, the possession mechanic confuses people at first, because Viego suddenly looks like your dead teammate. The thing is, a possessed body is still Viego, and the moment he leaves it he is back to his own kit. Learn that, and team fights get clearer. If you’re newer to jungle, our guide to LoL roles breaks down the position, his cosmetics live on the Viego skins page, and we have a dedicated Viego ARAM guide too.

Put simply, good Viego counters block his W or deny the first reset, and after that he’s just a melee champ with no way back in.

FAQ

Who counters Viego the most?

Champions who stop his dash or his stun, such as Poppy and Morgana, and champions who deny his execute, such as Kindred.

What does Viego’s passive do?

Enemies who die near him become wraiths. Attacking a wraith lets him take over the dead enemy’s body and heal.

Does anti-heal work against Viego?

Yes. His Q steals health, so Grievous Wounds from Bramble Vest, Executioner’s Calling or Mortal Reminder reduces his healing.

How do you dodge Viego’s W?

Spectral Maw has a charge time before the dash. Move out of its line during the charge.

Is this list based on win rates?

No. It is an editorial list based on ability interactions in patch 26.20. We don’t use win-rate data.
