Veigar Counters: Who Beats Veigar

Updated for patch 26.20. Ability details come from Riot’s official game data for this patch.

Veigar counters are picks that tank his magic burst, dodge or block his cage, and punish him before his stacks spiral. He scales Ability Power infinitely through his passive, locks you down with Event Horizon and deletes you with Primordial Burst, so the real counters starve his stacks early and survive his combo later.

These picks are based on how each kit interacts with Veigar’s abilities. We don’t use win-rate data, so treat this as the reasoning behind each matchup.

Veigar counters: Veigar, the Tiny Master of Evil, splash art

Why is Veigar hard to counter?

  • Phenomenal Evil Power (passive): hitting an enemy champion with a spell or scoring a takedown makes him permanently stronger.
  • Baleful Strike (Q): magic damage to the first two enemies hit, and units it kills give him permanent Ability Power.
  • Dark Matter (W): a delayed blast in an area, with a cooldown that shrinks as his passive grows.
  • Event Horizon (E): a cage that stuns enemies who pass through its edge.
  • Primordial Burst (R): a targeted blast that deals more magic damage the lower the target’s health.

Veigar gets stronger every minute. Pressure early, magic defense and anything that beats his cage work against him.

Which champions are the best Veigar counters?

Kassadin

Void Stone (passive) makes Kassadin take reduced magic damage, and Veigar’s damage is all magic, so every part of the combo lands softer than it would on another mid laner.

Fizz

Playful / Trickster (E) makes Fizz untargetable while he hops. A well-timed E dodges Primordial Burst, which is a targeted ability, and Fizz can follow up on Veigar while his ultimate is on cooldown.

Morgana

Black Shield (E) absorbs magic damage and disabling effects until it breaks. Event Horizon’s stun is a disabling effect, so a shielded ally walks through the cage.

Sylas

Hijack (R) steals the enemy’s ultimate. Taking Primordial Burst gives Sylas the same execute (aimed at Veigar’s own team, this time).

Lissandra

Frozen Tomb (R) cast on herself makes Lissandra untargetable and invulnerable while she heals. It can block Veigar’s burst after he has committed his cage and ultimate, which leaves him with nothing to follow up for several seconds (both are on cooldown).

How do you counter Veigar in lane?

  • Deny his Q stacks. Every unit killed by Baleful Strike gives him Ability Power, so pressure him when he tries to last-hit with it.
  • Walk around the cage, not through it. Event Horizon stuns when you cross its edge. Inside, you are safe until you try to leave.
  • Respect low health. Primordial Burst deals more damage the lower your health, so back earlier against him.
  • Fight early. His passive grows with every spell that hits a champion and every takedown.

Which items counter Veigar?

You need Magic Resist and anti-burst items. Banshee’s Veil grants a spell shield that blocks the next enemy ability, which can eat Primordial Burst. Zhonya’s Hourglass puts you in stasis for 2.5 seconds. Mercury’s Treads add Magic Resist and Tenacity, and Quicksilver Sash removes crowd control except airborne, so it can cleanse the cage stun. All of them are in our LoL items database with stats and patch history.

When is Veigar at his weakest?

When is the best time to punish him? Early. Phenomenal Evil Power and Baleful Strike both scale over time, so his early levels are when his stacks barely exist.

For what it’s worth, his other weak window is right after Event Horizon. The cage is his main defensive tool and his setup for Primordial Burst, so a fight that starts while it is on cooldown leaves him with no way to stop an engage (and no dash to escape it).

Does he fall off if he loses lane? Not exactly. Even a losing Veigar keeps stacking from Baleful Strike on minions, so pressure has to continue all game, not only in lane.

Is Veigar hard to play against for newer players?

Not in lane, honestly, where he is often weak early. The catch is that new players let him farm his stacks freely and meet a monster at 30 minutes. Punish him early and the late game is a completely different matchup. Our guide to LoL roles covers mid lane, his skins are on the Veigar skins page, and ARAM players can read our Veigar ARAM guide.

Whatever you lock in, good Veigar counters punish him early and pack enough magic defense to tank the cage-into-ult combo.

FAQ

Who counters Veigar the most?

Kassadin is the hardest counter, because his passive reduces the magic damage he takes. After that, Fizz’s E dodges Primordial Burst entirely, and Morgana’s Black Shield lets allies walk straight through the cage.

How do you escape Veigar’s cage?

Event Horizon stuns enemies who pass through its edge. Wait inside until it ends, or use an untargetable or crowd-control-blocking effect.

What item blocks Veigar’s ultimate?

Banshee’s Veil grants a spell shield that blocks the next enemy ability, and Zhonya’s Hourglass puts you in stasis.

Why does Veigar get so strong late?

His passive and his Q stack permanent Ability Power, so he just keeps scaling.

Is this list based on win rates?

No. It is an editorial list based on ability interactions in patch 26.20. We don’t use win-rate data.
