Poppy Counters: Who Beats Poppy

Updated for patch 26.21. Ability details come from Riot’s official game data for this patch.

Poppy counters are top laners who fight her at range, away from walls, or who cut through the Armor and Magic Resist she builds up. She’s a 125 range tank whose damage is a hammer swing and a slowing zone, whose stun needs a wall behind you, and whose passive resistances grow as her Health drops. The picks that beat her stay out of melee range or make those resistances irrelevant.

Five matchups below, each tied to named abilities. We didn’t look at win rates for any of them.

Why is Poppy hard to counter?

  • Iron Ambassador (passive): she throws her buckler, which bounces off the target; picking it up gives her a temporary shield.
  • Hammer Shock (Q): a hammer swing that damages and leaves a zone that slows enemies, then explodes after a delay. Cooldown 8 seconds at rank 1, 4 at rank 5.
  • Steadfast Presence (W): passive Armor and Magic Resist, higher at low Health; the active gives Move Speed and stops enemy dashes around her, slowing and grounding anyone it stops. Cooldown 20/18/16/14/12.
  • Heroic Charge (E): a dash that shoves the target backward, with a stun if terrain stops the shove. Cooldown 14/13/12/11/10.
  • Keeper’s Verdict (R): a channelled hammer strike that knocks enemies very far away. Cooldown 140/120/100.

Poppy is a wall. Her resistances climb the lower she gets, her shield comes back every time she grabs the buckler, and any champion who relies on a dash to reach her (or to escape her) runs into Steadfast Presence. Then there’s Keeper’s Verdict, which can remove a carry from a fight entirely. So where does her damage actually come from? One swing, one zone, and one charge that only stuns near terrain. Ranged picks? They starve her.

Which champions are the best Poppy counters?

Teemo

Teemo attacks from 500 range, and Poppy has 125 (yes, the gap is that big). Toxic Shot (E) poisons every attack for 4 seconds, Move Quick (W) adds Move Speed until a champion strikes him, and Blinding Dart (Q) blinds the target so her attacks miss. Heroic Charge needs a wall behind him to stun, and a Teemo who stays in the middle of the lane gives her nothing to pin him against. His mushrooms from Noxious Trap (R) poison and slow whoever treads on one, and Poppy has to walk across the lane through all of them to reach him. Guerrilla Warfare (passive) makes him invisible after standing still, even more so in brush. Funny enough, he doesn’t dash, so Steadfast Presence has nothing to stop.

Quinn

Quinn brings 525 range, a dash that jumps her back out of trouble once it lands, and a vision-hindering strike on top, which is a lot of answers for one melee tank. Vault (E) leaps to an enemy and slows them, then lands near Quinn’s maximum attack range away, which is exactly where Poppy can’t reach. Blinding Assault (Q) hinders vision and damages nearby enemies. Harrier (passive) marks targets for bonus damage, and Heightened Senses (W) adds Attack Speed and Move Speed after she hits one. The catch is Steadfast Presence: Vault is a dash, so stay out of range when Poppy activates it.

Kayle

Every enemy pierced by Radiant Blast (Q) is slowed and damaged and loses some of its resistances. Her whole defence is resistances. Cutting both is the cleanest answer. Divine Ascent (passive) adds Attack Speed, Move Speed, Attack Range and waves of fire as Kayle levels, and a long game against a tank is exactly what she wants. Starfire Spellblade (E) adds bonus magic damage to attacks, with an active based on missing Health. Celestial Blessing (W) heals Kayle and speeds her up. Divine Judgment (R) makes an ally invulnerable, which can even save a teammate from Keeper’s Verdict follow-up.

Fiora

Riposte (W) briefly soaks up every hit and disable, then answers with a stab that stuns if the thing it soaked was an immobilizing effect. Heroic Charge into a wall is an immobilizing effect. Time Riposte for it, and Poppy is the one stunned. Duelist’s Dance (passive) reveals a weak point that heals and speeds Fiora when struck, and Grand Challenge (R) reveals four of them. Lunge (Q) is a dash, so mind Steadfast Presence, and Bladework (E) gives two fast attacks with the second one a guaranteed critical strike. Honestly, a Fiora who reads the charge wins the trade outright.

Darius

Apprehend (E) passively makes Darius’s physical damage ignore a percentage of the target’s Armor, and Hemorrhage (passive) bleeds enemies over 5 seconds, stacking up to 5 times. Both erode a tank who relies on Armor. Decimate (Q) heals him for every champion hit by the blade, Crippling Strike (W) slows, and Noxian Guillotine (R) deals true damage that grows with Hemorrhage stacks. The caution: Noxian Guillotine leaps to its target, and leaps are what Steadfast Presence is built to stop. Bait it first.

How do you play the lane against Poppy?

  • Stay away from walls. Heroic Charge only stuns if it pushes you into terrain.
  • Step out of Hammer Shock’s zone. It slows and then explodes after a delay.
  • Don’t dash near her when Steadfast Presence is up. It stops dashes and grounds whoever it catches.
  • Stand between her and the buckler. Iron Ambassador’s shield only comes when she picks it up.
  • Respect Keeper’s Verdict. 140 seconds at rank 1, and it can send your carry very far away.

Which items counter Poppy?

She stacks Armor and Magic Resist, and her passive adds more as she loses Health, so penetration does more than raw damage. Black Cleaver’s Carve takes 6% of her Armor per hit, stacking 5 times, and Serylda’s Grudge has 35% Armor Penetration. For AP champions, Void Staff’s 40% Magic Penetration fills the same role. Blade of The Ruined King’s Mist’s Edge deals damage based on her current Health, which ignores how tanky she builds. Mercury’s Treads give 30% Tenacity, trimming the wall stun when she does land it. Full numbers are in the League item database, and tanks facing her in a long lane often lean on Unending Despair for its healing pulse.

When is Poppy at her weakest?

In the open. Without a wall behind you, Heroic Charge is a push with no stun, and her only reliable damage is Hammer Shock on a cooldown that starts at 8 seconds. Keep trades in the open centre of the lane.

The second window is right after Steadfast Presence. Its cooldown is 20 seconds at rank 1, and once it’s spent, dashes work against her again. Put simply, that’s when Quinn, Fiora and Darius should commit. Keeper’s Verdict on cooldown (140 seconds at rank 1, 100 at rank 3) is the third window, since it’s her only way to break a fight apart.

New to top lane? Our guide to LoL roles covers it, and every champion we’ve written up is listed in our guides index. Her cosmetics fill the Poppy skins page, while the Poppy ARAM guide shows her on the Howling Abyss. Long story short, Poppy counters fight her at range and away from walls, and they wait out Steadfast Presence before they dash.

FAQ

Who counters Poppy the most?

Teemo and Quinn, who outrange her; Kayle, who reduces her resistances; Fiora, who can turn Heroic Charge into a stun on Poppy; and Darius, whose damage ignores part of her Armor.

When does Heroic Charge stun?

Only when the target is pushed into a wall. Without terrain behind the target, it’s just a dash and a push.

What dashes does Steadfast Presence stop?

Enemy dashes around Poppy while it’s active. A stopped enemy is slowed and grounded.

How long is Keeper’s Verdict’s cooldown?

It starts at 140 seconds, shortens to 120 at rank 2, and ends at 100 at rank 3.

How were these Poppy counters picked?

We checked Poppy’s patch 26.21 ability text against each top laner’s kit. Win-rate data wasn’t used.
