Darius Counters: Who Beats Darius

Updated for patch 26.20. Ability details come from Riot’s official game data for this patch.

Darius counters are picks that outrange him, interrupt his bleed stacking or get out before he hooks them. He’s a melee juggernaut who stacks Hemorrhage through autos and abilities, heals off Decimate and executes you with true damage, so the whole plan is never letting him hit five stacks.

The picks below are our editorial choices based on how each kit lines up against Darius. We don’t use win-rate data, so treat this as an explanation of why a matchup works.

Darius counters: Darius, the Hand of Noxus, splash art

Why is Darius hard to counter?

  • Hemorrhage (passive): his attacks and damaging abilities make enemies bleed for physical damage over 5 seconds, stacking up to 5 times, and at five stacks his damage spikes hard.
  • Decimate (Q): a wide swing that hurts more with the blade than the handle, and heals him based on enemy champions hit.
  • Crippling Strike (W): his next attack slows the target.
  • Apprehend (E): passive armor penetration, and an active hook that pulls enemies to him.
  • Noxian Guillotine (R): a leap that deals true damage, more for each Hemorrhage stack.

Put simply, Darius wins extended melee fights. Range, short trades and anything that stops his passive from stacking work against him.

Which champions are the best Darius counters?

Vayne

Vayne has 550 attack range against his 175, and Condemn (E) knocks him back, stunning him if he hits terrain. He literally cannot touch her unless she messes up the spacing.

Quinn

Quinn attacks from 525 range. Vault (E) dashes to an enemy, slows them, briefly interrupts them and lands her back near maximum range, which resets a fight Darius thought he had started.

Kennen

Mark of the Storm stuns an enemy hit three times by his abilities, and Lightning Rush (E) lets him move fast through units. At 550 range with stuns ready, Kennen can punish Darius before the pull ever lands.

Garen

Decisive Strike (Q) gives Garen a burst of Move Speed that breaks free of all slows, then silences the target. That answers Crippling Strike’s slow and stops Darius from casting during the trade.

Teemo

Blinding Dart (Q) blinds the target. Darius builds Hemorrhage stacks largely with attacks, so a blind during an all-in costs him stacks and damage (and Teemo fights from 500 range anyway).

How do you counter Darius in lane?

  • Stay away from the blade. Decimate hits harder and heals more with the outer edge, so standing close to him actually takes less damage than standing at the edge.
  • Count his stacks. At five Hemorrhage stacks his damage spikes. Disengage before that if you can.
  • Respect the pull. Apprehend has a fixed range, and once it is on cooldown, he has no way to stop you walking away except his W slow.
  • Don’t fight low near him. Noxian Guillotine deals more true damage for every stack on you.

Which items counter Darius?

He heals from Decimate, so Grievous Wounds matters: Bramble Vest and Thornmail apply 40% Wounds when he attacks you, and Executioner’s Calling applies it when you deal physical damage. Plated Steelcaps reduce incoming damage from attacks by 10%, and Frozen Heart reduces the Attack Speed of nearby champions by 20%. Compare them in our LoL items database; tanks can look at Sunfire Aegis for the armor and the extra punishment in trades.

When is Darius at his weakest?

When should you fight him? Right after he wastes Apprehend. That pull (his E, Apprehend) is his only real gap closer. With it down, he’s just walking at you.

For what it’s worth, he’s also weakest before his stacks build up. Hemorrhage only spikes at five, and Noxian Guillotine scales off those stacks, so short trades that end before the fifth stack strip away most of his kill pressure.

Does range really matter that much? Real talk: yes. Darius has 175 attack range and a single hook on a long cooldown, so every step of distance counts. Every second he spends walking toward you is a second he isn’t stacking bleeds.

Is Darius hard to play against for newer players?

Yes, because his lane is all about one mistake: getting pulled at four stacks. Thing is, all of his abilities have obvious animations (the Q wind-up, the E hook), so you can read most trades before they start. If you are still learning top lane, our guide to LoL roles breaks down the position. His skins are on the Darius skins page, and ARAM players can check our Darius ARAM guide.

Pick your champion, but the best Darius counters either space him out or get out before he stacks you to five.

FAQ

Who counters Darius the most?

Ranged top laners such as Vayne, Quinn, Kennen and Teemo, who can trade from far outside his 175 attack range, and Garen, whose Q breaks his slow.

What is Darius’s passive?

Hemorrhage makes enemies bleed for physical damage over 5 seconds, stacking up to 5 times. At full stacks his damage spikes hard.

How do you dodge Decimate?

Stand close to him or far away. The outer blade deals more damage and heals him more than the handle.

Does anti-heal work against Darius?

Yes. Decimate heals him based on champions hit, so Grievous Wounds from Bramble Vest or Executioner’s Calling reduces that healing.

Is this list based on win rates?

No. It is an editorial list based on ability interactions in patch 26.20. We don’t use win-rate data.
