VAN 9001 Error in Valorant: How to Enable Secure Boot and TPM

The VAN 9001 error means Valorant’s anti-cheat (Vanguard) detected that Secure Boot or TPM 2.0 is disabled on your PC. Riot requires both for Valorant on Windows 11. Here is how to fix it.
What VAN 9001 Means
Riot Vanguard checks two Windows security features at launch:
- Secure Boot – prevents unauthorized software from loading during startup
- TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module) – a hardware chip that stores encryption keys
If either is disabled, you get VAN 9001 and cannot launch Valorant. This requirement has been in place since Patch 5.0 (June 2022) for Windows 11 players.
Step 1: Check If They Are Already Enabled
Before changing BIOS settings, check your current status:
- Press Windows + R, type
msinfo32, press Enter - Look for Secure Boot State – it should say “On”
- Press Windows + R, type
tpm.msc, press Enter - Look for TPM Manufacturer Information – if you see “Specification Version: 2.0” it is enabled
If both are on and you still get VAN 9001, restart your PC and make sure Vanguard is running (check the system tray for the Vanguard shield icon).
Step 2: Enable Secure Boot in BIOS
The exact steps depend on your motherboard manufacturer. In all cases:
- Restart your PC
- Press the BIOS key during startup (shown on screen, usually Del, F2, or F12)
- Find the Secure Boot option and enable it
- Save and exit
ASUS
Advanced Mode → Boot tab → Secure Boot → OS Type → set to “Windows UEFI mode.” If Secure Boot is greyed out, go to Key Management and install default Secure Boot keys first.
MSI
Settings → Advanced → Windows OS Configuration → Secure Boot → set to Enabled.
Gigabyte
Boot tab → Secure Boot → set to Enabled. If greyed out, set CSM Support to Disabled first (under BIOS tab).
ASRock
Security tab → Secure Boot → set to Enabled.
Step 3: Enable TPM 2.0
Most modern CPUs have a built-in TPM module, but it may be disabled by default:
- Intel CPUs: Look for “Intel Platform Trust Technology (PTT)” in BIOS → Advanced → PCH-FW Configuration. Set to Enabled.
- AMD CPUs: Look for “AMD fTPM” in BIOS → Advanced → AMD fTPM Configuration. Set to Enabled.
Step 4: Make Sure Your Disk Is GPT
Secure Boot requires UEFI mode, which requires a GPT partition table (not MBR). To check:
- Right-click Start → Disk Management
- Right-click your main drive (Disk 0) → Properties → Volumes tab
- Check “Partition style” – it should say GUID Partition Table (GPT)
If it says MBR, you can convert without data loss using: mbr2gpt /convert /disk:0 /allowfullos in an elevated Command Prompt. Back up your data first.
Still Getting VAN 9001?
If Secure Boot and TPM are both enabled and you still see the error:
- Restart your PC (Vanguard needs a fresh boot, not just a game restart)
- Make sure Windows is updated – some Windows 11 builds have Vanguard compatibility issues
- Uninstall and reinstall Vanguard: close Valorant, open an elevated Command Prompt, run
sc delete vgcandsc delete vgk, then reinstall Valorant
