PsyOps Master Yi

First game I played with PsyOps Master Yi was a late night ranked session, maybe 1 AM on a Tuesday. Locked it in without even checking the splash properly. The loading screen hit and I remember thinking Riot finally gave Yi a skin that doesnt look like a budget action figure. The whole psychic soldier aesthetic works way better than it has any right to on a melee carry who usually just runs at people with a sword.

What PsyOps Master Yi actually changes

New VFX across the board. The Q Alpha Strike leaves these psionic afterimages that read clean in teamfights. You can actually track where Yi is phasing through targets, which is something the base skin struggles with when things get hectic. W Meditate gets a force-field visual, like he’s projecting a psychic barrier. Looks good. Feels good when you’re channeling it under tower while the enemy jungle camps your lane.

E proc hits different too. The true damage indicator has this sharp energy pulse that’s satisfying to watch stack up. Not gonna lie, the R Highlander activation is the highlight. The whole model shifts into overdrive with psionic energy trailing behind him. Played maybe 200 games with this skin through season 10 and 11, and the ult VFX never got old.

New recall animation as well. Master Yi goes into this meditation pose with psychic energy swirling around him. Standard voice lines, no new VO, but the visual package carries enough weight on its own. The model itself puts Yi in tactical military gear with glowing psionic elements. Think black ops meets telekinesis. The visor design is clean and the color palette stays readable against most Rift backgrounds.

(Random aside: my duo partner thought this was a Legendary when he first saw it in champ select. Had to tell him it was 1350 RP.)

The PsyOps line and release context

PsyOps Master Yi dropped September 3, 2020. Mid-season 10. The PsyOps skinline was one of Riot’s better thematic launches that year. Military psychic operatives. Yi fits the fantasy naturally since he’s already this disciplined warrior type, so strapping some psionic tech onto him reads as an upgrade rather than a costume.

Lucas Parolin and West Studio handled the splash. They cooked on this one. The composition has Yi mid-strike with energy cascading off the blade. Portfolio-worthy piece honestly.

8 chromas total. Tanzanite is my go-to, the deep purple gives the whole psychic thing more of a supernatural edge. Ruby flips the color scheme to something aggressive, almost Sith-looking. Sandstone is the weird one – washes out some of the contrast but kinda feels like a desert ops variant if you squint. Rest are fine but those three stood out across my games in Diamond.

Kinda feels like the PsyOps batch was Riot testing whether military-themed skins could compete with the flashier fantasy lines. For Master Yi specifically, I think it worked. Better than PROJECT Yi in some ways because PsyOps leans into the spec-ops angle without overdesigning the model.

Should you buy PsyOps Master Yi?

Real verdict: 1350 RP feels fair for what you get. The VFX package alone justifies the Epic price tag. Been running this in rotation with Eternal Sword and Spirit Blossom, and PsyOps holds up. Different vibe entirely. Where Eternal Sword goes mythic and Spirit Blossom goes ethereal, PsyOps goes tactical. Good variety for Yi mains who want options depending on mood.

Could be wrong here but I think this is a top three Master Yi skin for anyone who plays him in ranked regularly. The visual clarity on abilities matters when you’re diving the backline in a 5v5. Shop has it permanently, so no rush, but its worth picking up during a sale if you’re climbing with Yi this season. Fair warning though – if you already own PROJECT Yi you might feel like the themes overlap slightly. They dont really once you play both, but at first glance there’s similarity.

For Yi one-tricks specifically, this is a must-own. Three things stood out: ult VFX, recall animation, chroma variety. That combo at 1350 RP is hard to argue with. Spammed this in Diamond for two full splits and keep coming back to it. S-tier Master Yi cosmetic.
