Piltover Customs Heimerdinger

First time I saw Piltover Customs Heimerdinger in a loading screen I thought someone modded the game. The whole hot rod mechanic aesthetic on a yordle who already builds turrets? Felt like Riot read my mind. Been running this skin on and off since season 3 and it still holds up way better than it has any right to for a 2010 release.

The hot rod turret fantasy

So the big draw here is the VFX work on Heimerdinger’s turrets. They get this grease-monkey garage overhaul that turns your lane into a junkyard pit stop. The Q turrets look like little engine blocks with exhaust pipes, and when they fire its got this industrial spark effect that reads clean even in chaotic teamfights. Not sure if it’s just me but the auto attacks feel snappier with the custom particles, even though obviously nothing changes mechanically.

W rockets get a subtle retexture too. They look more like welding torches than the base magical bolts. The E grenade keeps the same general shape but the color palette shifts to match the oil-stained copper vibe of the whole skin. Played maybe 40 games with this last month in Diamond and I can confirm the abilities dont blend into river terrain the way base Heimerdinger sometimes does. Huge for poke lane clarity.

Heimerdinger himself gets the full mechanic outfit. Goggles, jumpsuit, wrench tucked somewhere. His walk animation with that waddle just hits different when he looks like he crawled out from under a Camaro. Voice lines stay base, no new VO here, but honestly the base voice already fits the tinkerer fantasy so it works. No new recall animation either since this dropped before recalls were a thing Riot invested in.

Piltover Customs and the 2010 release window

Piltover Customs Heimerdinger released November 22, 2010. Early League days. Pre-season 1 territory. The Piltover Customs line is small but iconic. Blitzcrank got one too and that skin is still a fan favorite. Kinda feels like Riot had a garage theme week and just went with it.

No splash artist credited in the data which tracks for that era. A lot of the early splashes were internal Riot work before they started outsourcing to studios. The splash itself is charming in a retro way. Heimerdinger standing in front of hot rod machinery looking proud of himself. Classic.

(Random aside: I used this splash as my Discord avatar for like six months back in 2022 and people kept asking if it was from a mobile game. The old art style really does look different from modern League splashes.)

975 RP for a Standard tier skin with custom VFX is honestly a solid deal. No chromas available which is a shame because I’d kill for an obsidian or chrome finish variant. Shop has it permanently so no vault anxiety, you can pick it up whenever.

Should you lock in Piltover Customs Heimerdinger?

Real verdict: if you play Heimerdinger in any capacity this skin deserves a spot in your collection. 975 RP feels fair for what you get. The VFX changes on turrets alone justify it for ranked where visual clarity matters. Could be wrong here but I think this might be the best value Heimerdinger skin pound for pound. Dragon Trainer is the flashier Legendary option sure, but Piltover Customs Heimerdinger has that understated cool factor.

For Heimerdinger mains climbing through mid lane or dropping turrets bot as a support cheese pick, this skin just works. Real talk though, if you’re a one-trick with the budget go Dragon Trainer. But if you want a solid rotation skin that wont break the bank and still turns heads in the loading screen, Piltover Customs is it. Been daily driving this one again in my last 15 or so ranked games this week and I keep forgetting its from 2010. Banger skin. Simple change – huge impact on how Heimerdinger feels in game.
