Defender Leona

Been playing Leona since season 2 and Defender was actually the first skin I ever used on her. Not gonna lie, there’s something about the old school knight look that just hits different compared to the flashier stuff Riot puts out now. Simple concept, clean execution. Worth talking about even in 2026.

The knight fantasy on the Rift

Defender Leona swaps the Solari gold-and-red palette for a full silver knight aesthetic. Think medieval crusader vibes. The shield gets a blue and white crest treatment, the armor shifts to steel grey tones, and the sword picks up that classic broadsword silhouette. No new VFX on this one, no voice changes, base VO stays the same. Standard tier skin from 2011, so temper expectations.

What I actually like about it is how the color shift reads in teamfights. Leona’s base skin blends into certain map lighting, especially around dragon pit. Defender’s silver armor pops a bit more against the terrain. Could be wrong here but I feel like my ADC tracks my engages better when I’m running this skin versus base. Played maybe 40 games with it last month in Diamond and the peeled-back visual design keeps things readable when you’re diving the backline.

The splash art holds up surprisingly well for something from July 13, 2011. Leona standing guard with her shield raised, snow or ash falling around her. Classic composition. No artist credited in the data for this one, which tracks for early Riot splashes before they started crediting studios consistently.

Where Defender sits in Leona’s lineup

Real talk though, Leona has one of the deepest skin pools in the game now. Solar Eclipse, Lunar Eclipse, PROJECT, Battle Academia, DWG, High Noon. The list goes on. Defender sits at 750 RP which makes it one of her cheapest options. For that price you’re getting a model swap and texture change. No new recall animation, no particles on your Q proc or your ult. The E engage looks identical to base.

Kinda feels like the skin exists for collectors and people who started playing League back in season 1 or 2. I respect that. Not every skin needs to be a 1820 RP production with 47 new voice lines. Sometimes you just want your support tank to look like she walked out of a medieval comp (sidebar: I used to run this with Pentakill Yorick bot lane back in season 3 for the full knight aesthetic and it was hilarious).

The Legacy part matters here. Defender Leona sits in the vault, so you cant just grab it whenever you want. Hextech crafting or waiting for one of Riot’s Legacy sales is your path. I rolled it from a chest around last September I think, season 14 was winding down. Lucky pull honestly.

Should you chase this one?

Straight talk: if you’re a Leona main looking for the best bang for your RP, this isnt it. Solar Eclipse and Lunar Eclipse exist. Battle Academia is clean. PROJECT has the full VFX overhaul. Those skins give you way more per gold spent.

But if you’re a collector who wants every Leona skin, or you genuinely prefer the understated medieval look over Riot’s modern design philosophy, Defender has charm. 750 RP is fair for what you get. The silver armor reads well in lane and teamfights. No chromas available, what you see is what you get.

Best use case I can think of: you’re a Diamond support player who locks in Leona as a counterpick, you dont one-trick her, and you want something different from the default look without dropping 1820 on a Legendary. Defender fills that role. Not the flashiest skin in the game, not trying to be. Just a solid early League cosmetic that still looks decent on the Rift after all these years. Skip if you already own Eclipse or PROJECT, grab it from a chest if the universe hands it to you.
