Ruined Skins

Not gonna lie, the Ruined skinline hit different when it dropped. Summer 2021, the whole Ruination event was taking over the Rift, and Riot decided to corrupt half the champion roster with Viego's black mist. The aesthetic is simple: take a champion, break their armor, add green-black corruption veins, make their eyes glow. Sounds basic on paper. In practice some of these skins genuinely go hard while others feel like they got the minimum viable corruption treatment and shipped.

What Makes the Ruined Line Stand Out
The visual signature is unmistakable. Black mist particles, cracked armor revealing green energy underneath, corrupted weapons dripping with Viego's influence. Every Ruined skin shares that same color palette: deep blacks, muted grays, and that sickly green glow that screams "the Ruined King touched this." The splash arts all share a similar composition too, champion mid-corruption with the black mist swirling around them. Feels cohesive as a set.
What ties the line together mechanically is the VFX treatment. Green-tinged ability particles replace whatever the champion normally uses. Karma's tether goes from golden to corrupted green. Miss Fortune's bullets trail mist. Pantheon's spear leaves that ghostly afterimage. Its consistent across the board and I respect the commitment to a unified look even if it means less individual creativity per skin.
Compared to something like Coven or Eclipse, the Ruined line leans harder into narrative. These arent just "what if champion had dark aesthetic" skins. They're specifically tied to the Ruination storyline, Viego corrupting champions one by one. That gives them more weight in the lore but also means they feel dated now that the event is long over. Season 11 energy. (Random aside: I still have the Ruination event pass tokens sitting unclaimed on my alt account from back then.)
The shared recall animation across most of the Epics shows the champion fighting the corruption briefly before succumbing. Nice touch. Not groundbreaking but it reinforces the thematic unity. Color-wise you're looking at maybe the most restricted palette of any skinline. No warm tones anywhere. Everything is cold, dead, corrupted. Works for the theme but means the skins can blur together in your collection page.
Best Ruined Skins Worth Locking In
Kinda feels like Gangplank the Betrayer carries this entire skinline on his back. The skin recontextualizes GP as the one who willingly joined Viego rather than being corrupted against his will. Thematic distinction matters. His barrels have that mist effect, the Q shots trail green, and the ult feels genuinely oppressive with the darkened cannonballs. Been running this in my Diamond games since it dropped and the auto attack animations feel crisp. Top tier Epic skin that outperforms most 1350 RP options in the game.
Ruined Miss Fortune sits right behind GP for me. The corruption works well on her because her base design is so bright and flashy that the contrast hits harder. Her ult with the green mist bullets fanning out is clean. Not gonna lie though, MF has so many good skins that this one gets lost in the shuffle. If you already own Gun Goddess or Star Guardian you might not reach for this one often.
Prestige Ascended Pantheon is the crown jewel if we're talking pure rarity. Mythic tier. The white-gold treatment over the Ruined base creates this "freed from corruption" look that reads beautifully in game. Seen maybe 2 of these in my ranked games all of last season. Exclusive feel. The spear VFX especially on the E channel look premium.
Ruined Karma surprised me. Could be wrong here but I think its actually her second best skin after Odyssey. The corrupted mantle works visually, her W tether in green mist looks threatening which Karma rarely gets to feel. She reads as dangerous in this skin instead of supportive.
Ruined Pantheon base version is solid. Not spectacular. The corruption on his shield and the mist trailing his leap look good but at 1350 RP you're paying standard Epic price for a skin that mostly changes his color scheme and adds particles. Functional. Gets the job done.
Champion Roster and Thematic Fit
Nine skins total in this line. Not huge by modern standards but tight enough to feel curated rather than bloated. The champion selection makes sense narratively since these were all tied to the Ruination event storyline.
Gangplank fits perfectly. Pirate king corrupted by another king. The betrayal angle gives his skin more narrative weight than anyone else in the set. Miss Fortune as the Bilgewater counterpart works too, she's fighting the corruption in the lore while the skin shows what happens if she loses. Good duality.
Pantheon and Karma feel like slightly forced picks. Maybe just my experience but Pantheon already had the whole "warrior resisting dark forces" angle covered by his base lore with the Aspect. Adding Ruination on top is redundant thematically even if the skin looks fine. Karma being corrupted is interesting narratively but in game she just looks like dark Karma which isnt exactly breaking new ground.
Shyvana and Draven round out the roster. Shyvana's dragon form with corruption actually slaps, the half-dragon going full dark works visually. Draven feels like Riot needed another AD carry in the line and picked the flashiest one. Not bad but not inspired either. Sea Dog Yasuo and Unbound Thresh exist in this line too, though they feel more like event adjacents than core Ruined skins. (Sidebar for Thresh mains specifically: Unbound Thresh is basically just pretty-boy Thresh with minimal corruption and it caused such drama on release that Riot had to address it.)
Who should have gotten a Ruined skin? Garen seems obvious given the Demacia connection to Viego's wife. Maybe Taric. Real talk though, I think the line is better off staying small and event-specific rather than expanding into generic territory.
Tier Breakdown and Pricing
Seven Epics at 1350 RP dominate this line. One Mythic in Prestige Ascended Pantheon. One Standard tier skin at 750 RP. No Legendaries anywhere. That's notable.
The lack of a Legendary means no skin in this line gets new voice lines reflecting the corruption. Missed opportunity. Imagine corrupted GP with Viego-influenced VO taunting his enemies about serving the Ruined King. Would have elevated the entire skinline. Instead every champion keeps their base voice which creates this weird dissonance where they look fully corrupted but sound completely normal.
At 1350 RP per skin the value proposition is standard. New model, new particles, new recall, same voice. Fair price for what you get across the board. Nothing here is overpriced but nothing feels like a steal either. The Prestige Pantheon obviously costs more in terms of grinding mythic essence or event tokens but thats the prestige tax not a reflection of quality over the base Ruined version.
Price range runs 750 to 1350 RP for purchasable skins. Tight band. Means if you want to collect the full set you're looking at maybe 9000-10000 RP total which is reasonable for a complete skinline collection. Been thinking about doing that actually, last Tuesday I was going through my collection and realized I'm only missing Shyvana and Draven from the full set.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many Ruined skins are there?
Nine Ruined skins total as of 2024. The line dropped between 2021 and 2022 during the Ruination event. Riot hasnt added new ones since and probably wont given the event is long over. Think of it as a closed set tied to the Viego storyline specifically.
What is the best Ruined skin?
Gangplank the Betrayer takes it for me. The narrative angle of willingly joining Viego separates it from the rest. VFX are clean, the barrel and ult effects with green mist hit hard in teamfights. Prestige Ascended Pantheon if you care about exclusivity, but pure gameplay feel goes to GP.
Which champions have Ruined skins?
Miss Fortune, Gangplank, Karma, Pantheon, Shyvana, Draven, plus adjacent picks like Yasuo and Thresh. Eight champions total with Pantheon getting two versions (base Ruined and Prestige Ascended). All tied to the 2021 Ruination event narrative.
Does the Ruined skinline have Legendary skins?
No Legendaries in the Ruined line. All standard Epics at 1350 RP plus one Mythic prestige. Means no new voice lines on any of them which is kinda the biggest weakness of the set. Champions sound normal while looking fully corrupted. Bit of a disconnect.
When did the Ruined skinline release?
First batch dropped summer 2021 during the Rise of the Sentinels event. A few more followed into early 2022. The whole thing was tied to Viego's release and the Ruination storyline that dominated season 11. Been a closed set since then with no new additions.
Are Ruined skins worth buying?
Depends on the champion. Gangplank the Betrayer is worth 1350 RP easily, one of his best skins period. Ruined MF and Karma are solid picks. But for champs like Draven who have better options elsewhere, you might skip these unless you care about the Ruination lore or just like the corrupted aesthetic.
Do Ruined skins have chromas?
Some of the Epics got chromas on release. Standard chroma packs with the usual Ruby, Obsidian type options. The chromas mostly shift the corruption color from green to other tones which honestly changes the vibe significantly. Purple corruption on MF reads completely different from the base green.
Will Riot make more Ruined skins?
Unlikely. The Ruination event wrapped in 2021 and Viego's storyline has moved on. Riot tends to keep event-specific skinlines closed once the narrative concludes. Could see a one-off callback skin someday but a full new batch seems off the table. The line feels complete as is.
