Verified November 7, 2026 · Status: live collection system
WoW Transmogrification lets you change your gear’s appearance to any weapon/armor you’ve unlocked — collect appearances by equipping items (unlocks instantly), use the Transmog UI at any Ethereal in capital cities, outfits save up to 10 slots per character, and the collection is fully account-wide via Warbands for appearances your armor class can use. Symptom → cause → first action
| Problem | Likely cause | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Can’t apply a transmog | Cost in gold (small) or armor type mismatch | Check item class matches gear slot |
| Item won’t unlock appearance | Already unlocked, or BoP for another class | Check Appearances tab for duplicate status |
| Transmog resets after death | It doesn’t — transmog is permanent | Report bug to Blizzard CS |
| Can’t find Ethereal NPC | In main capital cities | Orgrimmar (Valley of Honor), Stormwind (Trade Ward) |
| Outfit limit hit (10/character) | Classic 10-outfit cap | Delete unused outfits; or use Warband-shared ones |
| Custom color option missing | Not all items have tints | Collect alternate drops of same item |
How to unlock appearances
- Loot and equip: Equipping an item adds its appearance to your Appearances collection.
- Soulbound exception: You can “learn” an appearance from a BoE (Bind on Equip) item just by picking it up on any eligible character.
- Legendary / unique items: Require actual loot pickup; some have bind-on-pickup rules.
- Achievement-granted: Some appearances unlock from completing specific achievements.
- Vendor / Trading Post: Buying a cosmetic item unlocks its appearance immediately.
- Seasonal events: Darkmoon Faire, Hallow’s End, etc. drop event-specific cosmetics.
Armor class rules
| Class group | Can wear transmog of |
|---|---|
| Plate (Warrior / Paladin / DK) | Plate, Mail, Leather, Cloth |
| Mail (Hunter / Shaman / Evoker) | Mail, Leather, Cloth |
| Leather (Druid / Rogue / Monk / DH) | Leather, Cloth |
| Cloth (Priest / Mage / Warlock) | Cloth only |
Rule: you can transmog down but not up — a plate wearer can use leather transmog, but a cloth wearer cannot use leather.
Transmog UI walkthrough
- Visit an Ethereal NPC in Orgrimmar (Valley of Honor, Ethereal’s Store) or Stormwind (Trade Ward, Ethereal’s Store).
- Right-click the NPC → opens Transmogrifier.
- Click your current gear slot → opens Appearances browser.
- Browse by Armor Type / Slot. Filter by Collected / Not Collected.
- Click an appearance → click Apply.
- Pay small gold cost (10-100g typical; weapon enchants cost more).
Outfits — save your looks
- Save up to 10 outfits per character.
- Name each outfit (easier switching between transmog sets).
- Share an outfit from one character to another via the Collections → Transmog → Share button (Warband feature).
- Switching outfits is instant — apply all 10 pieces at once.
- Outfits cost gold to switch (small amount per piece).
Hiding slots
You can hide specific slots to create unique looks:
- Helm: Interface → Display → Hide helmet.
- Cloak: Display → Hide cloak.
- Shoulders / tabard / belt / gloves: Set the slot’s transmog to “Hide” from the Transmogrifier.
- Weapons: Cannot be hidden; must transmog to something.
Hidden Artifact Appearances (Legion)
- Each spec had a “Hidden” and “Elite PvP” artifact appearance in Legion.
- Still farmable: visit Dalaran (Broken Isles), find the Artifact Trainer, complete the Mage Tower.
- Mage Tower challenge was removed, then returned as Timewalking event → check Timewalking for current availability.
- Rewards also include unique Druid forms and class-specific weapons.
If transmog isn’t working
- Can’t apply? → check armor class compatibility. Plate → cloth OK, cloth → plate not allowed.
- Appearance says “not collected” but I own the item? → may be bound to a different character; re-equip on matching toon.
- Can’t afford transmog gold? → cost scales with item level; use a cheaper outfit as base.
- Duplicate items of same name? → some items have alternate color unlocks; collect each variant.

- Still stuck → Blizzard CS ticket with appearance name + item ID.
FAQ
What is WoW transmogrification?
The system that lets you change the visual appearance of your equipped gear without changing its stats. Collect an appearance once, apply it to any eligible item of the matching type.
How do I unlock new appearances?
Equip the item (any gear your character can equip adds the appearance to your collection), buy from vendors, complete achievements, or pick up BoE items on an eligible character.
Is transmog account-wide?
Yes — Warbands made the appearance collection account-wide for your armor class. A plate transmog collected on your Warrior is available to your Paladin.
Can I transmog any armor class?
Only down, not up. Plate wearers can transmog to mail, leather, or cloth. Mail wearers can use leather or cloth. Cloth wearers can only use cloth.
Where is the Transmog NPC?
Ethereal NPCs in all major capitals. In Orgrimmar: Valley of Honor, Ethereal’s Store. In Stormwind: Trade Ward, Ethereal’s Store. Also Dornogal (TWW capital).
How many outfits can I save?
Up to 10 per character. Each outfit is a named preset of all transmog slots. Switch between outfits with one click; switching costs small gold per piece.
Can I hide my helmet or cloak?
Yes. Interface → Display → toggle Hide Helmet and Hide Cloak. Some other slots can be hidden via the transmog UI’s “Hide” option for that slot.
